The Spanish Princess (2019)
Not Any Accurate Portrayal Of History
Big disappointment right from the get go. I jumped right into this after binge-watching The White Queen (which was superb) and unfortunately this must be the moment historical productions decided to become totally ridiculous bc right at the start they show Queen Isabella of Spain leading a ride into battle against a group of Spanish Moors who have snuck up on her and her daughter's entourage on the road to England. And lol she rides out in full armor against full grown men of the desert on horseback with her huge sword and returns victorious covered in blood LMAO. And btw she behaves like a cold distant father to her daughter Catherine of Aragon. (Why do modern feminists want women to be men entirely?) Anyways, apparently later on in this series, Catherine of Aragon actually leads an army into battle while 7 mos pregnant! ROTFLOL!!
So obviously this all never happened and since I adore history, I literally cannot watch it being embellished for the sake of identity politics. We need to know history the exact way it was so we can avoid repeating it. Women were not permitted to do much back then and we need to not return to those times. However, if everyone eventually believes these twisted versions of the past, everyone will think women always had rights and so how will that help prevent future backtracking?
In addition, I am not delusional. One woman cannot win a skirmish in the desert against full grown men without a gun or something. So I just laughed and turned this off.
But I am for showing history's cool facts thru showing us margenilized groups in their true and accurate positions of influence. I.e. This series has a black attendee to Princess Catherine and this is based on reality bc Queen Isabella had people of such around her at this time.
But I'm sorry, Queen Isabella was involved in stragetizing battles etc but never rode into battle.
And Catherine of Aragon only rode out to speak to English troops while pregnant but never rode into battle.
Skip this unless u don't care about history.
Gunpowder (2017)
Was good to finally know story of Guy Fawkes
Kit Harrington puts in a good performance here and actually does a bit more than just look soulful all the time and mutter his lines in a monotone. I often wonder if directors have to take a whip and smack it near him to do anything at all that requires acting or moving around besides just looking cute and mouthing his lines, lol! Then again tho you never know...maybe he does try to actually put on a different, more intense performance but his superiors on each production continue to insist he just stand around and look sad from beneath his sexy curls, etc...who knows, right? Cos I can't imagine Kit would be doing this on purpose, lol! But all teasing aside,
I love Kit Harrington very much as I was a tremendous GoT fan (bf S8) and actually that's one of the reasons
I watched this series at all, even before I even knew that it was about Guy Fawkes. That and seeing it was a period drama!
But damn what performances Shaun Dooley and Peter Mullen put on and really everybody in this production are really unbelievable.
The only thing is I don't know why it's called Gunpowder? It's certainly not the "story of gunpowder" tho I suppose it's near the time when it was beginning to be used alot.
This series gets really gritty with the horrible torturing and executions. And since we all need to see the truth of what humans used to do to each other I forgive this.
But still as a side note, it really makes me angry about how apparently in our modern times, alot of people just want to go back to those days--and make no mistake, that's where we're going--specifically by persecuting and encouraging hatred of half the people in our country just for not subscribing to one person's narrative, exactly the same as banning certain religious beliefs in favor of "the one true faith" which is what's going on in this country right now.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this miniseries, especially bc my husband of 35 years, a pure-blooded English immigrant to the U. S., used to tell me all about how they annually celebrated Guy Fawkes Day in the UK around the same time of year we Americans celebrate Halloween. My husband, Martin Records, father of my four children, died suddenly in March of 2021 and we all miss him dearly.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
A Movie That Actually Wants To Reward The Moviegoer!
...and doesn't preach at ya for being such an awful human being, etc! Imagine that! And see, it made money cos it wasn't woke and gave the fans what they wanted! I was so thrilled and surprised to see Toby McGuire too cos somehow I'd avoided all the rumors regarding this release and man, it was just like when we got to see Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian!
I was upset that Aunt May died but I guess it was to evolve the character of SpiderBOY to SPIDER-MAN! And Tom Holland def brings this to life!
See, it isn't that difficult to please the masses Hollywood. Just have a coherent storyline that jives with previous movies' storylines and never forget character arcs. The beautiful nostalgia gift we get in this flick would be a big yawn if it had not been against a background of an actual plot and actual character development. Thank you very much SONY!!
13 Minutes (2021)
Smh. Another Hollywood "Preach At Ya"
I am only 30 minutes into this movie and it is so full of "white man bad" messaging, abortion rights and immigration politics when I expected a movie about natural disasters. And normally I can take a little bit of this guff now only because every single Hollywood movie is now is chock full of it right now but this one is really over doing it. But worsely doing it on top of a lot of really bad acting, except for Trace Adkins and Anne Heche, whom I'm happy to see onscreen again. But I just wonder who the hell is paying these production companies to put out these horrible horrible movies that do nothing but give us "The Message" instead of a story and character development? I'm gonna wanna watch it for about 10 more minutes but not any longer if it keeps getting like this .
Pig (2021)
Meaningful Tp Those Of Us Who Grieve
This movie isnt some bigtome blockbuster or whatever but it means something to those of us who have lost a loved one from this world, and shows how one does try to run away to throw their grief, denial, pain & loneliness into work, a certain goal, or even one of our fellow creatures. Nicholas Cqge gives a good performance imho as well as his costar. Alex Wolff.
