Her Sey Çok Güzel Olacak (1998)
Pride of Turkish cinema
This is probably one of the greatest movies in the pages of Turkish cinema history. Performances, photography, script and locations couldn't be combined better. Nothing looks artificial or theatrical, a must to call a movie "good". Everyday characters living among us in a series of so true adventures. Highlihts of the soundtrack were also written by Mazhar Alanson, one of the two leading actors, who is also the leading vocal of the greatest Turkish band so far, MFO (Mazhar, Fuat, Ozkan)and fit into the mood of the movie perfectly, literally tailor-made.
I've liked this movie while i was just 14 and not able to understand what it really tried to tell. Maybe watched it at least 20 times during the last 16 years, and it's still getting more precious for me every time i watch it.
Overall, in this age that everything's consumed at light speed and getting artificial day by day, this is a wonderful road movie to take you out of this world for about two hours, although it's not a colorful fantasy or a visual effects-ramped sci-fi, but a modest and natural story.
Ali Baba ve 7 Cüceler (2015)
unexpectedly bad
Completely meaningless. Something that Cem Yılmaz had never, and should never had been done. As far and away the best comedian, one of the best directors and a talented actor of Turkey, he's always been a part of quality works. In his stand-up comedy shows, or movies, or commercials, or any little episode of a TV show that he's guest starred, there's always been a respect to audience, which i really couldn't find in this movie. Neither a trace of intelligence, nor a little creativity. Cliché jokes similar to 80s' cheap Hollywood comedies, a terrible scenario written with the intention of "parodizing" the last decade's few blockbusters (Hunger Games, Lost, Walking Dead etc.), and disturbing level of product placement ads throughout the film made it a total failure. I've waited for two hours for a little "breeze" of his former masterpieces like Gora, Yahşi Batı or Her Şey Çok GÜzel Olacak, but just left the theater with a feel of great disappointment.
There is another guy called Şahan Gökbakar, who represents the bottom line in Turkish comedies. This movie is just a step beyond of Şahan's works, but nothing more.
I believe that Cem Yılmaz haven't even watched the entirely edited movie before its first audition. Otherwise, he would never allow this movie to be shown in any theater, just like the Kubrick's Fear and Desire.
I really miss the brilliant Cem Yılmaz who "parodized" Kubrick with great respect in his movies. (Monolith sequence in AROG) Hope is next movie will be in the same lane with his former works.
Nefes: Vatan Sagolsun (2009)
Masterpiece...
"Nefes" is one of the most realistic war-themed movies, not just with the costumes, visual effects or exciting fight scenes, but with a close and detailed look to psychology of being a soldier a step apart to death. Their fears, sadnesses, funny moments, girlfriends, families...this movie contains all. The role-play is unexpectedly brilliant though many of the actors are amateur and yet students of conservatory. By the way, movie is technically excellent, photography, visual effects, sound effects are the best that i've ever seen in a Turkish movie. Great photography takes you into the dark, hopeless and gloomy atmosphere of the movie, as good as it was in "saving private ryan", much better than "pearl harbor"... Afterall, the story is great and one of its kind, not heroic, doesn't depend on one or more "heroes" or spends much of the time with a million tons of bullets and bombs just like in cliché Hollywood blockbusters, and very very real.
It's a must-see movie who wants to see something real about "war".
