The In Between (2022)
Eye-rolls, sighs and more...
This film is a tough pill to swallow. It's whiny, unnecessarily emotional, the couple has zero chemistry, even if you like the actors individually. I think it's a film for people who like to feel very sad in a privileged world, though I can't really say because there is no story-arch here.
It really is a bad film from start to finish. In the first few scenes it tricks you into making you think it might turn out to be a good story, but it is not. I sat through the whole thing because I don't like to judge movies I did not watch completely - and I kind of regret it now.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
They're all right. All of the 5-star reviews.
Predictable, tons of references that are probably a tip of the hat to actual Star Wars fans, but they're backfiring. This is an action film on a Star Wars set. And there is actually stuff forced (get it..?) in there, that just doesn't belong. I am not a patriarch or some simple-minded dude, but I really don't need a bunch of female Star Destroyer Admirals, kissing girls or anything like it. That stuff just doesn't belong into Star Wars. In the end I was even joking that they squeeze in a transsexual storm-trooper who converts to Hinduism and all of the main characters applaud his/her decision. Jesus, what a weird Star Wars movie.
Der Junge muss an die frische Luft (2018)
Genuine, well written, authentic
It's as surprising as it is amazing to feel like a movie has actually been built around a real life. The kid is just amazing in the role, absolutely 100% believable and at points you just forget that you're watching a film.
There's really not much more to say here. Watch the movie. It doesn't get a much better than this.
Us (2019)
Did we all miss that this is a parody?
I get the feeling that this movie is a parody. First hint: Jordan Peele is the director. But to be honest, that was not the reason for me to think that. All of the characters are exaggerated. Gabe stays in the real world, no matter how crazy things get and this stays consistent until the end of the movie.
I am pretty certain that this is supposed to be some sort of weird comedy. I couldn't take it seriously, almost nobody in the comments thought it was scary, the weird way things seem to resolve in some way? I am almost sure that this is somewhere in between satire and parody and most people just failed to notice :)
No rating, intentionally, because the genre of the movie highly affects my rating :)
A Dog's Way Home (2019)
Predictable but still fun to watch
Phew. This was a tough one. As a dog owner, the film already scored a few - admittedly biased - points. But I am still a fan of the screen and movies and - hence - a fan of story-telling. This is where this movie lost a few points. It's plot is ridiculous beyond reason, which really bothers be, because some scenes could have just been less overdone, which would have made it a great film. This way it puts a target on its back for the critics - and even for me. The fact that it is predictable lies in the nature of this type of film, so I expected that. What the film really didn't need is stereotypes and political correctness that it portrays. Had they only put a bit more thought into those scenes that really made me shake my head, I would have loved this movie a lot. Now I realize that this review sounds a lot more critical than it actually is. I would still recommend you watch it - if you like dogs or animals in general.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Star Wars? Not really.
Well. I had a hard time putting a rating on this thing. I think, as an independent movie this would have been a 6 out of 10 sci-fi movie. Now here's the problem: They butcher the Star Wars franchise to put the label on it and it's making it a lot worse.
My problem with it in particular is that it tries desperately do be a Star Wars movie but it's more or less in the area of "fan art". It makes you smile every once in a while but you wouldn't think of watching it again or recommend it to a friend. But then again I am thinking about the budget of the movie and the whole industry behind it.
The first one of the Disney adaptations (forgot its name...) was good, Rogue One was even excellent and it entirely caught me off guard. This one is just a huge step down and is far from good. And like I said. Squeezing it into the Star Wars universe is what's wrong with it.
4 out of 10 for several reasons: great visuals, as expected, great sound, as usual, decent story. This would have been 6 points, however I have to vote this down quite a bit for the horrible acting performance (except for Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson) and the fact that they force it into the Star Wars universe.
Every Star Wars fan will know exactly what I mean.
Book Club (2018)
Worst writing ever.
To cut a long review very short: It's what you expect. The script isn't good enough for one good story, so they take 4.5 bad ones and call it a movie. The .5 being the story of the girls in their "book club".
It's predictable, cheesy, causes eye-roll over eye-roll just to eventually cause fake-yawns to let your co-watchers know you no longer enjoy watching it.
Yes, we get it. People in their 60s can still be naughty. I just don't think reading crappy literature qualifies them for such traits.
Horrible film. Three leftover stars for good camera and decent acting. The rest just doesn't even deserve the rating. I don't understand how it got more than 6 stars to begin with.
Lommbock (2017)
Guess you need to be stoned to call it great.
The first one was decent, the second one has its ups and downs. To cut a long story short: it's a nice sequel. They got the main cast back together and there are a few references to the 2001 movie Lammbock.
This one however lacks a truly original plot. It's also very predictable, but I don't want to get into that in particular because I don't want to spoil anything for anybody (who might not see certain things coming from a mile away).
The fact that the characters suddenly speak Polish in some parts is just off-putting. I understand this is considered a stylistic element but it's also just annoying.
Bottom-line: it's entertaining and alright to watch, but nowhere near a 7.something rating.
Most good (and great movies) I watch at least twice. This is not one of those movies.
Free Fire (2016)
Great cast, Tarantino'ish style, which eventually makes it suck
I've never been a fan of those "violence at all costs" Tarantino-movies. Especially the ones which are hard to follow.
This is one of those movies. An arms deal goes downhill. Unfortunately, so does the movie.
Most of the time I can judge a movie by how many names of the characters I remember. Despite the great cast and good acting (which is the reason for the 4 leftover stars to begin with), the plot is just horrible and I can only remember 'Justine', but just because she was the only female in the movie.
Anyways. If you like watching people crawl in abandoned buildings while being unable to use a gun, this might be the right choice for you. And when I say 'unable', I MEAN unable. Not like a bad shot or anything. Like literally not able to hit anything in a 10-foot-radius, let alone further away.
There's also dialog in the movie. But to be honest, none of that is relevant to the plot. They might as well just be yelling random stuff. It really doesn't matter.
This could have been one of these useless overrated Tarantino flicks from the 90s. None of those were good films either, and neither is this one.
Extortion (2017)
far from a B movie
I read a few of the reviews who hated the movie. "how did this make it to Netflix?" - I can tell you how :)
It is entertaining. I read people complaining about how unrealistic the movies are. But those are the same kinds of people who love the Transformers series :) Not saying the movie is unrealistic, but let's face it. It's a movie, not a documentary.
There are a few plot holes, I give you that. But as a software engineer I just roll my eyes when someone 'hacks into a system' (again) in some movie for the sake of storytelling.
I do not need every single detail of the movie to be well researched. Which is why it is a movie.
So much about the disclaimer :) The movie itself is good. Main characters do a great job, it takes you around a few turns in the Caribbean - and the overall message of the movie is great. Family matters more than money.
I rate it 7/10 because of the things that other people actually hated the movie for. I liked it, I just consider those gaps in research 'flaws', not total failures :)
It is definitely worth watching. It is well cast and entertainingly written and filmed. It's far from a B-movie or a low-budget production.
Whoever calls this low-budget doesn't know the first thing about production value.
The Island (2005)
Good film, great cast, found it by accident
I couldn't remember any Ewan McGregor movies. I liked him in Fargo so I thought I'd check out a few more. And ironically another one with a dual role.
Great film. It is somewhere in between the Matrix, Equilibrium and some of the writers own ideas, but aside from some weird holes in the plot (why isn't 'the product' better secured?) the film is really fun to watch.
And, most importantly: Sean Bean's character dies :) I can't think of a single movie or TV show that his character survives. He must be fun to kill.
The Resurrection of Gavin Stone (2017)
Weak acting, weak movie, overrated due to religion
I would like to say that the worst part about the movie is the score/music. I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of. And there it was. My friend used to play "The Sims" all the time. I think they stole it there :)
About the rest of the film: I switched it off about an hour into the movie when something dramatic was happening and I couldn't take it any more. The acting is so horrible. I don't buy the not-so-Christian Hollywood dude, and I bet he's going to become a real Christian by the end of the movie, and I don't buy the girl either.
I guess that is what happens when you have a very weak script and try to force god into the story. Finish it up with a bunch of bad actors and you end up with a very bad film.
I gave it 2/10 because cinematography wasn't all bad. Everything else was horrible.
Toni Erdmann (2016)
Tough to watch at times, but great as a whole
While many people will probably not understand what this is about and why this movie does have a point, I might be able to explain :) As a business owner I can entirely understand the contrasts of job-related pressure and the priorities that this movie portrays.
While family might be important and should be priority #1, this isn't always possible. Some of the scenes might appear exaggerated and way out of proportion, however I can relate to both character types in extreme situations.
It kind of caught me off guard because I didn't realize how long it was going to be. But I didn't feel bored. Neither did I consider it lengthy. It just takes its time to tell a very special story.
I grew up learning German. What bothers me about most German movies it that the actors seem to be very focused on what they're saying, about the pronunciation, tone, etc. - however, this always makes German actors sound like - well - actors. Not a single sentence seems natural.
This is one of the few movies in which this is not the case.
It presents a great view on family, a modern, corporate, global world and modern-day role models and relationships.
However, at times it's taking it a little bit too far and made me cringe a little bit too much, which is why I am giving it 7/10.
Other than that, I would recommend this movie to anyone who has an attention span that is long enough to appreciate the whole thing.
Remember (2015)
This movie came out of nowhere
1. Acting: the most believable I have seen in a while. Great. 2. Plot: not gonna spoil it for you. Which is why I am not gonna say anything but I liked it. 3. Other reviews with complaints: Probably one of them might be accurate about the details of dementia, but if you don't know a thing about that, this will not bother you at all. 4. My review: This came out of nowhere and I loved the movie. It's an original story. There are great actors. The story is entirely worth the cast. And - probably because it's Canadian - the movie didn't receive the attention it deserves.
That's about all I have to say about it because there are too many ways of giving things away and I really don't want to spoil anything.
This is not going to be a waste of your time, unlike many movies I have seen lately.
Victoria (2015)
Keeping it short
This is by far the best German movie I have seen in the last 10 years.
Even though Berlin night-life is not really my thing, it's easy to be captured by the story-telling and the amazing performances by all actors.
The idea of acting is to make it feel real and authentic to the viewer, and this is exactly what this movie does in an incredibly breathtaking way.
Most German films I have watched in my life seem to have dialogue that has a staged and and forced notion to it. It doesn't seem like anything anybody would say or even phrase that way.
Not this one. Modern culture would call this "raw" - as a compliment.
I'd call it the best movie of the year 2015.
Hunted (2012)
mixed feelings
This is really hard to review.
First of all: The actors do a great job. Second of all: The English finally figured out that it takes more than a budget of 5.000 pounds to get a decent show up and running. Third: editing is kind of weird, but you get used to it. BUT finally: The writers do a very bad job. Lots of holes in the plot, but let's just ignore that for now, the real problem is the very lame and not really believable dialog.
To give you an example of the kind of thing I mean: There's a kid, about 12 years old. He comes up with these really lame and cheesy lines on the one hand, seems pretty grown up for his age, but on the other hand he paints pictures for/of people he likes (holding hands) and has bedtime stories read to him.
I don't want to go into detail, I just think it's such a waste of budget and it's just incredibly bad writing.
On the plus side:
- you get to the almost everyones boobs :)
- it's entertaining, even though it's sometimes lame
- the main actress is really good looking for a British person :)
- good acting in general
Drawbacks:
- not believable, especially the way and the place it is set.
- annoying and cheesy dialog comes up every once in a while
- yet another conspiracy-theory-thing
That's it. Worth watching if you're just killing time, not worth watching if you want to focus on the plot.
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn (2012)
Overrated.
This movie is just a very bad version of Starship Troopers. Without the funny and ironic part of course.
In a nutshell. The same way, movies get underrated because they're based on a novel that is allegedly "way better", this movie gets overrated because it's based on a game.
A movie should always be looked at as such and nothing else. And looking at this film, the story, the characters (whose names I don't even remember), all I'm stuck with is "bad".
To avoid spoilers for the gamers who actually still want to watch this, I'm not getting into it. But don't expect anything interesting to happen in this movie. That's all I can say.
The Hunger Games (2012)
A book is NOT a screenplay.
...and that's why this movie deserves an 8/10 for being entertaining and believable throughout two and a half hours.
One of the more detailed reviews (the one by 'emptygravity') will help you out with some of the nuances that you will have missed if you haven't read the book.
There are a lot of bad reviews that claim that the movie is a "bad adaptation" - It is not. A book can be a basis for a movie, but it is NOT a screenplay and it never will be.
It's an interpretation of an artist, and his point of view is subjective and restricted - so is a photograph, that portraits somebody (literally) in a different light and so is a movie. This includes:
- the cast - the plot - on what to focus - (and lots more)
But about the 'focus': A story that takes days to tell in a book can never be completely 'converted' into a movie, unless it's something as dull and shallow as 'Twilight'.
So forget about the book for once and enjoy the impression that Suzanne Collins and Gary Ross are giving us. And yes, she also wrote the screenplay, so blame her for the adaptation :)
I haven't read the book and I have a lot of unanswered questions. But that doesn't matter. The movie is just amazing - and the producers' decision to avoid the R-Rating is completely understandable in my opinion, because I see a lot of educational value. To avoid spoilers, I won't go into detail, but it's a movie that portrays a likable hero, which a lot of the movies are lacking nowadays.
You find yourself in the protagonists point of view a lot and you really start to root for the good guys. The movies portrayal of entertainment, the power of television and the media over people (and how to take it back) is only a small glimpse of what the book might have to offer.
I am definitely going to read the book now, because I want to know the rest of the story.
A must-watch on my 2012 list, definitely Top 3. Ignore the bad reviews that refer to the books. People need to get that books are not screenplays - not only for this particular film, but for all the others out there.
Enjoy an amazing piece of work.
Courageous (2011)
You're courageous - if you sit through the whole thing...
At some point, I just started to do other stuff, like go to the kitchen and get myself another beer and all of the stuff you don't do if a movie is really good.
To sum stuff up:
- God is amazing, and all you should care about... - Black people are always evil, unless they're the Obama kind of black - Hispanics are alright, as long as they're believers and non-threatening
This movie was really bad. And not because of the story or the way it is shot, but because it's got a bonus of all you delusional god-fearing Americans. All this movie is about is telling you, that you should believe in god and that's it. Even if it means ratting out your friends or losing your daughter. You have got to move on and accept gods reasons.
It's really crazy that this movie actually made a 6.3 - it's not really good OR creative. It's cheesy and pretentious - and after the third or fourth Christian reference you just start to not take it serious any more - which is of course the worst that could happen to a movie.
Skip that one, unless you're a Christian fundamentalist that starts crying whenever god is mentioned in a movie and the righteous path is taken by everybody.
I just wasted two hours of my life - maybe, with this review, I can do my good deed of the day and save a few people from watching this.
Flypaper (2011)
Underrated
...at least so far it's underrated. 6.3 at the moment. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll try and keep it short.
It's fast-paced, it's twisted and it's very funny, not to mention unusual. I was actually just checking it out because of the great cast. Didn't really give a damn about the 6.3 - thought 'Eh... It's a comedy, just give it a shot." It's the best action comedy I've seen in a few years, and I watch A LOT of movies. It's totally underrated and I don't really see, why.
I didn't know what to expect, didn't read any plot summary or tagline and neither should you. So forget this review (and any other you might have read) and just watch the movie :)
Project X (2012)
Wrong Category :)
As many people here already pointed out, the message of this movie is what kind of bothers people. Nothing really matters, do whatever it takes to be cool and never mind the consequences.
But I want to add that this movie is just a very poorly filmed fake-documentary. There IS no real plot. I actually grabbed my tablet and played poker for 15 minutes right in the middle. That's not what I do. I even pause movies just to walk out of the room for 15 seconds. So if I reach for my tablet, that's not a good sign :) As I said, I wouldn't really call it a movie. It's like 'reality TV' nowadays, with a slight difference: the filmmakers admit it's not real :) Not rating it, because this thing can't really be perceived as a movie.
War Horse (2011)
weeeheeeheeeheee (all speak English, regardless of where we come from)
Oh my.
Checking "contains spoiler" didn't really feel right. This movie is so predictable that I don't really want to call it a spoiler, unless the watcher is really simple-minded.
But okay, to sum it up for everybody and save you some time:
- great score and beautiful images, amazing cinematography - everything else sucks
Act 1: Horsey-Horse (let's call him that instead of Joey) is born on a lonesome field where everybody speaks island-English. Somehow-but-not-really-protagonist-boy is totally amazed by that horse. His drunk-ass dad makes a stupid decision to buy the fancy horse instead of a worker. Boy teaches fancy horse to plough (yes, ACTUALLY plough, not what you think) anyways and proves everybody wrong. Hooray for Horsey. 1914 - WAR! Horsey-Horse has to go be a war-horse, because the harvest failed and drunk-ass dad and his family had to make money somehow.
Act 2: Soldier has bought Horsey from Boy and promises to bring him back. Horsey even makes friends (Black-Horsey). The British try to ambush the Germans (that speak English amongst one another for some reason), Soldier gets killed, because the Germans where expecting the 'ambush'. Horsey and Black-Horsey both get taken by 'ze jerr-mins'.
Act 2.1: Horsey and Black-Horsey have to answer to the Germans now. Some weird sub-story about two German deserters is told, horses get left behind at some farm in France (where everybody speaks English amongst one another) and grand-pa and grand-daughter - aka people with french accents - enjoy Horsey and Black-Horsey for a while.
Act 2.2: Horsey and Black Horsey get re-captured by the people with the German accents. English must have been THE language in the early 1900s. Must have been great not to need any translators. Europe - everybody speaks English with weird accents. Horsey manages to escape again, but Black-Horsey gets left behind. I spare you the dramatic crap wrapped around it.
Act 2.3: Meanwhile, Somehow-but-not-really-protagonist-boy had joined the British army and fights in a trench. Good for him. Now guess what: You're thinking 'They didn't - seriously?' The answer is 'No, not yet' :) Horsey, who is now a German deserter, gets caught up in the middle of the British and the German trench. Barb-wire. Horsey is hurt and can't move. A German and a British soldier decide to free Horsey from the barb-wire. They get along, share some tools, free Horsey and throw a coin to decide who gets to keep him. They shake hands, good riddance, kill you later, my friend. At least the German wasn't called 'Hans'. They return to their trenches and suddenly the war is over.
Act 3: Somehow-but-not-really-protagonist-Boy hurt his eyes in the field, so he's blind-folded and he can't see... One British soldier wants to kill Horsey, because he's of no use to them. A special whistle makes Horsey come to his original owner - he recognized him of course even though he was blind-folded - and everybody is happy to have the two re-united - But not for long! Horsey belongs to the British army now. French-accent-guy (Act 2.1) buys Horsey for an incredibly high price. And hands him back to his original owner because he realizes that those two belong together. Oh my f. god.
Horsey and Somehow-but-not-really-protagonist-Boy (Albert, btw.) return home, everybody hugs, everybody is happy, movie is finally over.
In short: I can't really grasp the targeted audience here. It's somehow for 14-year-old girls, but it's also kind of a war movie (in which everybody speaks English). Let's just say, it's probably for underachieving 17- to 20-year-old girls. Don't know if that was intended.
'All quiet on the western front' meets toughness-enhanced 'Seabiscuit'.
Reviewing my review before posting it, I realize that I can't think of anything plot-related that I missed... I wonder what the screenplay looked like :)
2 additional stars for great cinematography
1 additional star for great score
0 for the plot and the 'we may be at war, but we all (speak English and) love horses, right?'
The Tree of Life (2011)
The first time in my life I left the theater after 30 minutes
First of all: I am not the kind of guy that watches Adam Sandler movies and expects lots of cheap laughs and simple entertainment. Which is exactly why I was even more motivated to watch this piece of *insert random insult here* - when I saw that it was nominated for best picture - yay.
Second of all: I am not even the kind of guy who takes a girl to the movies and leaves early because she makes other suggestions of how we might spend the rest of the night, even if the movie is kind of disappointing. I want to make up my mind about a film - and yes - I have even passed on other activities, just to see if a movie turns out to be interesting after all.
I knew, this movie is going to be a bit challenging, so I didn't read any reviews and tried to avoid perceiving to much information about it, like I always do when I consider a movie worth watching.
But beware: There was no girl involved. I had no 'better option' of spending my evening and still I left the theater, checked my phone for user reviews and decided not to go back in. That's two firsts in one single movie.
I spare you the rest. Check the other one-star-reviews if you want to know what to expect. Unless you're a pretentious religious moron, you're probably going to doze off a couple of times in the middle of the 'movie', if you can put yourself through it. This movie does polarize. It's not like a Clockwork Orange, Requiem for a Dream or Fight Club - it's not a movie that tells apart people who are able to appreciate art and those who don't.
It's a movie that has no point and no plot - it's just filled with pseudo-intellectual bible-crap and 'distant memories'. I would advice anybody who honestly says that they liked this movie to see a shrink or an exorcist.
Horrible - Decades of watching and enjoying movies. Never ever left the theater. Not even to take a leak. Damn you, Tree of Life, for ruining my stats.
Off the Map (2011)
off the list of shows I consider good.
Well. I don't really see how anybody can watch this, consider it 'good', even for dull entertainment only. Without wanting to sound sexist and without being a sexist at all, you can still tell that this has been written by a woman. Entirely.
Moreover, this is the most unnecessarily violent piece of *beep* I have ever seen. I watched the entire first season, because I was curious if it was actually going to surprise me at all or if the plot is as predictable as I thought it would be. And IF I give it a bad review, I want it to be justified.
I think, the shows 'problem' is that it doesn't seem to be intentionally set as a soap, but it turns out to be one. It's cheesy, it's predictable, everybody hooks up and every bad-ass guy in the show is actually a nice guy hiding under a shell of tough dude behavior. Every 14-year-olds dream. But for 14-year-old girls, the show is way too violent and for every mature woman it's way too cheesy and exhausting to watch. But judging by the reviews, it apparently is not. Some grown women are still blinded by this dull type of entertainment.
Every single situation, every conflict, every plot detail is over-complicated. Here goes spoiler #1: One of the main characters wife is in a coma. His daughter died in an accident. And the girl who he is in love with, he kept pushing away in the past, because he's 'not ready', because of his wife of course. And when he finally decides to move on, the plot reveals that she has a heart condition and is probably going to die soon, too. Oh my f. god, I can't do that to him again... wtf?! Who writes that?!
Anyways, moving on.
In the first two episodes, the 'new' characters have problems adjusting to the new environment, because they don't know any Spanish. Stupid to go to 'South America' in the first place (I don't think they ever mentioned where exactly this is supposed to be, I'm guessing for legal reasons :) ), but never mind. Everything is going to be fine, because after the first two episodes, all the natives speak English just fine, all of a sudden.
Well, let's see about some cliff-notes. Is it worth watching for the following reasons?
Educational: not at all. No lessons learned. Role Models: None whatsoever. There's a bitch, a tough guy, a black guy, a Spanish gigolo, the typical nice and educated girl from the city, a man-whore, but (!) all of them turn out to be nice people under their tough shell of course. Realism: Don't bother. Crashing helicopters, crazy currents, anaconda-bites, ... Don't even know where to start.
I'm not getting into that any more, it's just overly complicated for no apparent reason, it's bloody and violent, just to be sensational. That's pretty much it.
I am not giving it one single star, because the actors do a very good job, even considering the script. All of them are very likable and believable. Especially Jonathan Castellanos does an amazing job, even though his English is a little bit too good for a native 'south-american'. Cinematography is also not bad either, even the special effects are well done. It's just that the plot is so incredibly bad that I can't even put it into words.
It's like watching a Katherine Heigl movie, combined with Stephenie Meyers writing skills, just that you find yourself wondering how the hell they good get the actors to ruin their careers with that.
Seriously, I could imagine myself in a lot of guest roles in the most crappy shows and movies, just for the fun of it. But I would pass on playing a dead guy in that show, because I don't think anybody would like to have that show in their resumee anywhere.
Off the Map: On the Mean Streets of San Miguel (2011)
not to mention...
...that the whole plot of each and every episode of this show is bad enough and very 'female', this one is my personal favorite.
It is unnecessarily bloody, like every episode. Not looking for realism here, but this is just not serving any purpose. The whole point of that thing is the drama and of course the message that this episode is supposed to send. And honestly, I have no idea what it is supposed to tell us.
At some point, the (bad) plot reveals, that one of the elderly residents of a village is a German ex Nazis who fled to south America. Judging by the score and the characters' reactions, it seems like they figured out that there is a horrible contagious disease amongst them and it has been for the past 75 years. First of all, the guy is not old enough to have actually been in WW2, but let's just skip that and pretend that he looks somewhat like 95 years old.
Still: What the writing geniuses are trying to tell us, is that the deserted 18-year-old officer (however he acquired that rank at this age anyways, but let's just ignore that, too) is still to blame for his crimes in the past, as a Nazi. So. I'm not saying that he is not to blame or that guilt wears off after 40 years or anything like that. But it's not that 'having been in the war and being German' does necessarily make you an evil person.
Blond girl gives us a disgusted and surprised look, when she reveals the horror (!) to everyone: 'He's a Nazi...', almost looking like she's about to start crying any second. Cut. Commercial.
So... End of the story: She keeps the almost dead guy alive and tries to get him to pay for his crimes (which they just imply he did because he used to be a German soldier). In the end, the kids he has been taking care of in south America for the past 75 years, ask what's wrong with him, and instead of telling them the truth (whatever that is anyways), Dr. Blond Girl just tells them some story, to keep his memory intact.
So what the hell is that supposed to tell us? All Nazis are bad and always will be, period. Every German is a Nazi by default, if he's older than 80 years. Those guys are plain evil. They didn't follow orders or get manipulated at all, that's just the way Germans at that time were wired.
Seriously, you might as well put a black guy in there and make everybody believe he's a violent gang-member. You know why? Yupp. Because he's black. They're all like that, you know...
Whoever wrote that, didn't do their homework. Those are very sensible subjects, and all the women who watch this pretentious crap are naive enough to believe it to be true, so I just had to write a very bad review about this episode.
Bad writing, again. Predictable plot, again.
Keep this woman (Jenna Bans) off television. I don't know what it is about her dull easy-to-sell little-girls dreams of bad-ass guys that are actually nice guys under their shell, that the women who watch that stuff like so much.
No matter, what this show tells you:
- Not every tough guy is a nice guy waiting to be saved by a naive girl
- Not every tough guy is secretly looking for the love of his life.
- Not every black guy is a gang member
- Not every bad guy has lost the love of his life and turned into a bad guy because of that
- Not every problem can be solved by a relationship
- OR by running away to Venezuela, or wherever the hell this is supposed to be
That's true for naive 14-year-old girls (no matter how old they actually are) and for Nazis running away from punishment
That's just not how the world works. I'm not looking for realism, don't get me wrong. I'm just not agreeing with the image they convey of the world and especially of an entire generation of Germans, that nobody really seems to honestly care about, unless it's about a very dark part of their history.
