Ms. Marvel (2022)
This can be so much more!
Ms. Marvel has a hear and a potential to be a really good show, but it's suffering from an inconsistent writing. Watching this show left me feeling like story was halfway done when they started the production and they just winged the rest along the way.
First few episodes are decent. Story is decent, characters are being introduced and in general groundwork is being laid down for Kamala's eventual ascension to super hero. There are no over the top action scenes or anything like that, but it's supposed to be that way at the start. She's a nerdy teenage kid who has to balance out her cultural heritage with her daily life in Jersey.
I'm not familiar with the muslim or south asian culture, or how accurately or inaccurately the show depicts it. For me all those details are there only for the character development, so I won't be judging it on that front, nor I am qualified to do so.
The problems start when the story progresses and reaches the superheroes vs villains territory. The villains, to say the least, are the most illogical and sometimes straight out stupid characters, that keep making decisions that will leave you scratching your head. They will say one thing and then do the complete opposite, or they will do something that completely jeopardizes their mission for the sake of looking evil(?). They'd be at one place and the next instant they'd be on the other side of the world.
It's like after 1-3 episodes, story begins to progress by jumping from one major plot point to another and doesn't showing what happens in between. Characters start behaving illogically and more and more plot holes start appearing.
Action scenes are a little clumsy. Mainly Iman Vellani herself looks a little out of place during action scenes, she's slow and awkward when doing fight scenes. You could argue the character is completely inexperienced and that's the reason, but that doesn't excuse the villains going along with her pace and acting awkward themselves to give the credibility to her lack of athleticism. In short, choreography isn't that great.
Despite all that, the show is a fun watch and kids will definitely enjoy it, but when you're an adult, you start to notice those inconsistencies, wanky characters that behave illogically, story that sometimes doesn't make sense, etc. All these just takes you out of it.
Her superhero scenes, where she's doing the "superheroing" is the highlight for me. Saving the day, running through the sky and leaving everyone in awe. That's the thing I like the most about this show and superhero genre in general. It's more believable and really interesting, watching her having a trouble saving a falling kid than a clancky choreography, where she's fighting a bunch of grown adults and holding her own.
Premise is interesting. It check most marks, of what made Spider-Man such a beloved character and her powers are fun to watch on screen (despite it being different from the comics). Kamala is a ray of sunshine and Bruno is a likable sidekick as well.
I want to like this show, I really do! One moment I get excited because of a cool scene and then I get completely taken out of it because the writing is just horrible.
If this show had better writers, it could easily be 8/10, but the writing is just killing it for me. Lets hope the writers will step up their game, or the showrunners get the new ones, if they decode to make a second season.
Warrior Nun: Ecclesiasticus 26:9-10 (2020)
Main character is way too dumb
Every episode I'm hoping that she becomes somewhat likable or relatable, but no. Each passing episode she becomes more and more annoying and just plain out dumb. She doesn't take anything seriously, can't read situation, tries to be quirky but fails miserably and is way to selfish.
Now for the dumb part.
This episode literary starts with her saying, that she doesn't owe anything to "a bunch of holier-than-though nuns" and that she's going back to her friends and "gonna live the hell out of this life"...
1. You literally owe you life to them and you're holding onto their most precious treasure. Not to mention that the fate of the wold depends on that treasure and despite everything, they were willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and not just yank the halo out of you. What do you mean you don't owe them anything, you ungrateful schmuck?
2. Live the hell out of your life? Umm... have you forgotten that there's a freaking 8ft tall unstoppable demon chasing you around that can literally sense your location? Well. I assume you did, because you've just left the only place that could protect you, not to mention your vest that masked your location from the said demon.
God this show is dumb. Why did I even bother writing this...
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Animated movie flawlessly incarnated on the big screen!
First of all I want to say that the Beauty and the beast is one of my favorite Disney animated movies and I don't know how many times I have watched it as a kid.
So, that being said, I may sound a little bias when I say that it is the best Disney animated movie adaptation I have ever seen! This is the animated movie flawlessly incarnated on the big screen.
-Both stage and voice acting was good. Emma and Luke did a good job of leading heroine and villain. I also really enjoyed Ewan McGregor's Lumière.
-Art director and designers did an amazing job of masterfully bringing the animated world to life.
-And what Choreographers did was incredible! Those dance and song scenes, combined with the set design... I am lost for words!
-Pacing and story is exactly as it was in the original animated movie, with a couple of new scenes where director took the liberty of saying a few words of his own, to leave his mark. But nothing much that would affect the main story, on the contrary it adds to it.
-Lots of people complained about cgi, but believe me it is NOT bad. Sure there were couple of iffy moments, but overall it was done beautifully. I'd prefer cgi Beast to Edward 2.0 and Edward 3.0 any day!
I apologize if the review is so overly positive, but I couldn't help myself when I loved every moment of it. So here is the bottom line, If you loved the Disney animated movie, I guarantee you're gonna love this, because it is basically the same, the story, the songs, the characters... Everything! The only difference you'll see is that it looks more real. I basically sat though the whole movie with a dumb smile on my face. If you haven't seen the animated movie before, you'll 'probably' still gonna love it, as one of my friends who didn't know about it, really loved it! and if for some reason you didn't like the original, i don't know, you'll probably still not gonna like it..?
Anyway, If people do say bad stuff about it do not listen, just go and see for yourself, you won't regret it!
