Evil Dead (2013)
Not what I expected. Still not sure if that's good or not.
So, I thought this was gonna be a classic zombie move. Which is why I entered with low expectations. I simply wanted to see the newest movie that comes out this year, so i figured I'd see this one.
This is purely subjective but I can't take zombie movies seriously as horror movies. Zombies and aliens. For some reason they never land in the horror realm and feel like sci-fi thrillers at best.
I was a bit wrong about this title. This, though deals a lot with the (un)dead, is more focused on demons and posession. So definitely a much stronger horror contended than may seem.
Now for the bad part. It's aggressive. Very. Aggressive as in violent, pushy, and in your face constantly.
I liked the dynamic at first as it keeps the audience attention on screen and engaged. But after a while you get tired. The constant action and gore gives you a sense that you're constantly running a race. There's no room for contemplating what's happening, analyzing, letting the scary parts sink in and leave a mark.
It is truly a very fever-dream-slasher. If that's what you're looking for, you're in for a good ride.
Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey (2018)
The issue with depicting sexual violence on screen
I have a bone to pick with the entertainment industry.
I'm glad we're no longer being "hush-hush" about SA. I'm glad we're telling the untold stories, previously swept under the rug. I'm glad we're saying "this wasn't right and we'll no longer stand for it".
But repeatedly shoving scenes with detailed sexual violence down the audience's throats makes me start to question the intentions behind them.
There's being delicate and sensitive. And then there's this. Movies like "Believe me", along with "Blonde", or shows like "Game of Thrones" leave a horrific aftertaste. And not the kind that feels like the record's been set straight. It almost makes me wonder: "Did somebody just accidentally put their fetish on screen? Is the author really strengthening society's morals or are they just getting off on this?"
Point blank - there are ways to state the facts and deliver the harsh truth without showing it in all the gory details. There is NO reason to traumatize an audience for the sake of telling a story.
Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy (2022)
Boring AF
Not a fan of kanye at all but I do enjoy a good documentary on a musician. I was intrigued by the idea of how old the footage is but that's literally all there is to this thing. A bunch of old tapes. This thing drags on without anything valuable to say or add to your life. A waste of time.
February (2015)
Just a few inches from greatness.
Blackcoat's daughter has been sitting on my watchlist for a little while now. I was intrigued by it's mystery and eeriness, but something told me this won't be as great as I think it will.
And that little voice was right. Blackcoat's daughter had a massive potential. Not just that, it was very close to reaching that potential by having all the right details and twists in the plot. I think it was the execution that made the whole thing flop.
When you're watching it and assuming you're a fan of horror, you know there's something good there, but there's also a lot of that "wait what?" filter over it.
It's like listening to an almost good joke at a family gathering from your cousin. You know there's something hilarious about it, but your cousin is probably telling the joke the wrong way. So everyone is kinda lost, smiling awkwardly, and not sure about what they just heard when the joke's over. Then someone googles the joke and everyone gets that "ooooooh, right, that's actually pretty funny' moment.
Same thing with this movie - it took me a Youtube explanation video to understand that the idea behind the movie was actually genious.
I love it when the viewer has to use their brain and untangle a plot. But there's a line, where if you make it too mysterious, the audience just loses the thread completely.
