May December (2023)

Slow moving, interesting psychological drama
2 December 2023
After hearing a lot of good reviews about it, particularly about Riverdale star Charles Melton's stellar performance, May December became my most anticipated movie of this year. Thanks to Netflix winning its rights to release it, I can now watch it before the year ends.

In May December, Moore plays Gracie, a mother with an infamous past. In the 1990s, Gracie got pregnant by a seventh grader named Joe, portrayed by Melton. As if that wasn't enough, she married him later on and they had two more children. Natalie Portman is Elizabeth, an actress who, twenty years later, is set to act the part of Gracie in an indie film based on her controversial life. Before the shooting of her film, Elizabeth visits Gracie's home to interview them and prepare for her role.

May December is my first Todd Haynes film. It is a slow-moving character study of three complicated characters. Depending on the viewer, it can be tedious or it can be interesting. For me, it's the latter. The movie starts with showing the seemingly picture-perfect family of Gracie and her attractive husband. It is through Elizabeth's prying eyes and investigation that we gradually begin to learn more about the couple as the story progresses. It is hard to understand why Gracie acts the way she do, and it is exactly the reason why Elizabeth chose to play her. It is also interesting to see how Gracie treats her children, but I wouldn't delve deeper into that. Her husband Joe, meanwhile, is still a kid trapped in an adult's body. His childlike quality is very apparent early on in the film as we observe his body language and reactions. He is a caterpillar who never learned how to fly. The highlight of the movie is Joe's breakdown. Melton is this year's shocker. A butterfly is shown in the film a lot, an obvious metaphor to his slow transformation and realization as the film moves forward. It is sad to watch.

Other things that I love about May December are its skillful camera works that excellently capture the characters' emotions, and a campy score that elevates the tension that is in the story.

I highly recommend this movie.

American Horror Story: When the Bough Breaks (2023)
Season 12, Episode 3
6/10
Weaker than the previous two episodes but still not bad
25 October 2023
This episode feels weaker compared to the previous two. In When the Bough Breaks, Anna Victoria Alcott as always experiences weird things happening around her. While there are still some creepy things going on, nothing really new happens in this episode, and the strange things occurring honestly begin to feel cliche and tired. Emma Roberts is a good actress but she's also really not in her best here, I'm sorry to say. I'm not sure if it's the writing or her acting? I dunno.

I am still, however, very much interested to know what's gonna happen next. I have yet to see the next episodes so I'm excited.

Good ep
25 October 2023
More strange things are happening in Rockabye. Really creepy episode. In this one, Anna Alcott gets nominated in an awards show. Emma Roberts is good, but not in her A-game I think. We also now get to see Cara Delevingne utter some dialogues.

I find things really interesting and I'm wondering where this is going. Although I think it's going to be like that classic film, y'all know what that is. I've never read the book though. I also feel like this season is better than the previous season, but I have yet to see the next episodes.

A part I really do love about this new season is the score in the end credits. Really beautifully haunting score.

American Horror Story: Multiply Thy Pain (2023)

Intriguing start
25 October 2023
Honestly I was thinking this first episode might be bad, given that the two previous seasons weren't that good overall. But Multiply Thy Pain is actually a pretty nice start with intriguing mysteries. I'm definitely happy that at least Emma Roberts and Dennis O'Hare are back It seems unfair that some people rate this episode lower because they don't like Kim Kardashian. I would understand if she's really very bad, but she's not. She's surprisingly decent and quite believable.

This first episode is intriguing enough for me to pretty much like it and get interested in watching the next episodes.

The White Lotus: Departures (2021)

Pretty crazy ending
19 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In this finale, things finally take a wilder turn. It's like, "nothing happens" but a lot of things also happen at the same time, lol I dunno. In this episode, Rachel feels stuck in her marriage and wants out. Nicole and Mark rekindle their romance. Tanya shatters Belinda's dream. Olivia and Paula's friendship is tested. And Armond...oh God...Armond. That particular scene is shocking and revolting.

Overall I think this episode is pretty good. With a gorgeous setting and despicable but very interesting characters, I wasn't bored one bit. However, despite an hour-run, it still feels rushed and I wasn't really satisfied very much. With so many characters storylines that needed conclusions, one hour might not have been enough to show them. Or maybe it's just that some things weren't timed well, I dunno.

Emotional, brutal
19 October 2023
This is my fifth??? Martin Scorsese movie, so I was expecting to like it since I liked/loved most of his other works. My verdict: yes, I really like this one too. I have to note that the cinema I watched it in had a pretty bad sound system and a few times I couldn't hear characters whispering. So I might rate this even higher on a future rewatch, hopefully on Apple TV soon.

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on a book, which is based on a true and forgotten story of the Osage Nation in the 1920s.

All the cast members really did great, which is an understatement. This is the first I see of Lily Gladstone, and she's just superb. Leonardo di Caprio, my favorite in this movie, is at the top of his game as well, and Robert de Niro is unsurprisingly amazing too. Despite a three-hour run, the story feels well-paced and doesn't really drag much. The story is also really distressing in some parts as well and this might be his most brutal film yet. I really cannot forget it, some of those scenes are still stuck in my mind and still makes me feel a bit emotional. I also love the minimal use of score, makes things feel more...I dunno...raw?

I also love the ending, very creative. I highly recommend for you to watch this.

Nice pilot
16 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The pilot episode is definitely an intriguing one. In this first ep, we are introduced to the White Lotus' resort guests. These guests include newlywed couple Shane and Rachel Patton, the rich Mossbacher family, and heiress Tanya McQuoid. We also have the resort staff, which includes manager Armond, masseuse Belinda, and new staff Lani.

It's a mix of comedy and...I dunno...a bit of mystery suspense??? There's definitely a little bit of suspense going on, from the moment the revelation in the airport is shown so you'll already wonder what's going to happen next that will lead to that character's demise. The characters are all interesting and weird and most of them have despicable personalities, which makes things more spicy.

The Gilded Age: Charity Has Two Functions (2022)
Season 1, Episode 5

Pretty good episode
11 October 2023
Aurora Fanes introduces Bertha to Ward McAllister, a real historical figure who is an "arbiter of social taste", which will give the Russells a chance to be accepted by the high society. Aurora and Bertha, along with Marian and Raikes, travel to Dansville to see Red Cross founder and nurse Clarissa Barton speak. We also see an impoverished part of NYC as we see the standoffish head housekeeper Mrs. Armstrong visit her ailing elderly mother in their run down apartment.

Honestly this episode is pretty good and I am loving the Russells' storylines but I am distracted by Louisa Jacobson's acting. Being one of the main casts, she definitely needs to improve a bit more, but then we all start somewhere.

The Gilded Age: A Long Ladder (2022)

Marian's Boots lol
11 October 2023
New York Globe editor T. Thomas Fortune, who is a real historical figure as well, takes an interest in Peggy's story and decides to publish it. Marian secretly befriends the mysterious Mrs. Chamberlain. Mrs. Fanes, afraid to end up like the Morris family, decides to help Bertha. Another shocking scene involves the cunning lady's maid Turner getting naked.

Honestly I would've rated this episode a little higher if not for Marian's storylines. I don't know if it's the writing or her acting, but her character sometimes feels so forced. And what's up with her bringing those old shoes?? It felt like an unnatural thing to do and it felt so random lmao.

The Gilded Age: Face the Music (2022)
Season 1, Episode 3

Shocking
11 October 2023
I enjoyed this episode as much as the previous ones. In this episode, Ada Brooks meets an old acquaintance/admirer. A scheming Oscar plans to court Gladys Russell, much to the annoyance of his lover John Adams. The Christian Advocate wants to publish Peggy Scott's story, but with racist conditions. Marian secretly meets Raikes again. George is betrayed by his fellow businessmen, and he unleashes his fury.

This episode is very interesting. I'm so loving Agnes more and her witty dialogues, and how she protects her naive sister. Also interesting to see the Statue of Liberty's hand before it was assembled. I didn't know those things. But the stars of this episode are, again, the Russells. George is definitely a force to be reckoned with. It's so satisfying to see those two-faced high society men getting what they deserved tho, although I do feel a little pity for Mr. Morris. The episode ends with a bang.

The Gilded Age: Money Isn't Everything (2022)

Money Is Everything
11 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode, the snobbish old money women decide to do some charity. Bertha suggests they hold it in the Russells' mansion. The ladies instead decided to rent a hotel for the charity event, making Bertha feel left out again. Marian meets Raikes, much to the annoyance of Agnes and delight of Ada. Meanwhile, the cook Mrs. Bauer is threatened by a thug.

I'm really loving the drama here, my favorite scene being George humiliating the hostesses of the event by buying everything lol. Rooting for the Russells as well, like yeah you go get them lol. Also Bertha's outfits are my favorites, like they're so eye candy. Marian's storyline is...okay, I guess.

The Gilded Age: Never the New (2022)
Season 1, Episode 1

Old and new families collide
10 October 2023
The old and new money families of New York face off in the new series The Gilded Age. The Gilded Age, I believe, is also set in the same universe as Downton Abbey.

Set in 1882, the pilot episode introduces us to the Russells, a nouveau riche family in NYC which consists of railroad tycoon George, his strong-willed wife Bertha, their college-aged son Harry, and their naive daughter Gladys. Meanwhile, penniless young woman Marian Brook move into her wealthy aunts' home without a choice. Affluent families like the Astors and Roosevelts also appear.

The production design is good, but I'm more in awe with the elaborate costumes. The storylines are entertaining and is also upstairs-downstairs like Downton Abbey, but this new series focus more on these prominent families. The actors are great, particularly Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, and Morgan Spector. A few of the others seem wooden, I dunno. Louisa Jacobson seems to struggle a little bit here.

But still, I'm excited to watch the next episodes.

Great performances, hit and miss story
5 October 2023
A Very Good Girl has some good messages to share. The movie doesn't know what it wants to be though. It's like, confused or something.

The acting is top-notch. Dolly de Leon is just perfect, which isn't really surprising. I hope to see more of her. Honestly I was doubting Kathryn Bernardo at first but it's very interesting to see a new side of her, and she played it very well.

The story is a hit and miss for me. It has some good moments, particularly Dolly and Kathryn's scenes. The climax was really great with a really shocking twist until the ending, which I didn't like very much. I dunno. I still recommend this film.

Dark, emotional
24 July 2023
Black Swan, Mother!, and the unfortunate Noah. I'm already familiar with Aronofsky's works. Requiem for a Dream would be my fourth film of his.

The story of four people with addictions could've been just a simple drama movie, but Aronofsky gave it a dark and twisted turn. The fast pacing and eye-catching visuals is paired with a riveting story and a magnificent score composed by Clint Mansell, who also composed the score of Aronofsky's other films including Black Swan.

The cast did a great job, but Ellen Burstyn stands out and gave a heartfelt performance. She should've won the Oscars. It is too bad that this film was not even nominated for Best Picture.

Bones and All (2022)
6/10
Raw and shocking, but can also be dull
21 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Bones and All is a dark romantic horror film. Better to have little or no knowledge about it before watching.

The movie started out very interesting, with a jaw-dropping opening. Taylor Russell's character is interesting and well-acted. She definitely has chemistry with Timothee Chalamet. However, I didn't really care much about their romance. I wasn't really engaged or something, and some of the middle parts can be a bit dull. The ending is definitely a bit disappointing as well.

I don't really wanna say more about this film in fear of spoiling others. Take my opinions with a grain of salt as I'm not really usually a fan of romance movies anyway. I can recommend you to try it.

Barbie (I) (2023)
8/10
Fun and surprisingly touching
19 July 2023
I was honestly doubting this movie at first, but surprisingly I find myself really liking it quite a lot.

Set in the colorful Barbie Land, stereotypical Barbie lives a perfect life every single day. One day, she shows signs of being...a human. She decides to go to the Real World to find the cure in order to make herself perfect again.

Barbie is a fun movie that has surprisingly plenty of heartwarming moments and good messages to offer. The set designs are eye-catching and on point as well. Both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling nailed their parts, but it is Gosling who mostly shines.

Something I'm pretty sure of is this movie getting nominated for the Oscars, most likely for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and probably Best Song for Billie Eilish. That song is beautiful and it's stuck in my head right now.

Visually stunning, exhilarating on most parts but still not as thrilling as most of the previous MI films
12 July 2023
The previous film Fallout is near perfect for me and I guess it would be really hard to top that one. Dead Reckoning Part One, overall, is not as thrilling as I hoped it would be and some scenes don't feel well-written or something. There's also too much talking, most of the time I had no idea what they were talking about but I still got the gist. Also I don't like what they did to Ilsa too.

On positive notes, Tom Cruise delivers, as always. New cast members are great as well, especially Pom Klementieff who played Paris. This film is visually breathtaking with still plenty of exhilarating scenes, but not just as thrilling as the action scenes in the previous films. The train scenes, particularly, are my favorites, as well as the motor jump on the cliff...WOW. Some of the talking scenes can be a bit confusing as well and how they explain that AI thingy is a bit too complicated, but you'll get the gist anyway so it doesn't really matter much.

I am excited for part two.

Black Mirror: Demon 79 (2023)
Season 6, Episode 5
8/10
Another "Not Black Mirror" episode but it's good
19 June 2023
This episode may be described as a comedy horror story, about a woman who meets a demon who tells her that she must do horrible acts. If not, the world will end.

Demon 79 is a fun and entertaining episode with a likeable protagonist. The story heavily reminds me of Knock at the Cabin, a movie based on a novel that I've just recently seen. I do wonder if Demon 79 took inspirations from that.

Demon 79 may be the best of season 6 for me. However, I dunno but the writers seem to have struggled with this whole season. I can say that I did enjoy this episode. But if I'm talking about the whole of season six, I can say that I'm a bit disappointed. Most of the episodes of season six, including Demon 79, are, to put it simply, "not Black Mirror". It's like, I ordered oranges but I got apples instead, you know what I mean? Still good, but not what I ordered. These stories are simply not what we waited for, what was it, 3 years?? Why didn't they just create an entirely new series instead?

TLDR: Demon 79 is an entertaining and fun story with a likeable protagonist. This episode itself is pretty good, but the whole season 6 is a bit disappointing overall because of these episodes including Demon 79 are not Black Mirror.

Black Mirror: Mazey Day (2023)
Season 6, Episode 4
5/10
Probably the worst episode of the series
19 June 2023
I say this might be the worst because this is my lowest-rated episode. Mazey Day is an episode that makes me question if Black Mirror is already losing its edge. Again, like Loch Ness, Mazey Day doesn't have the "Black Mirror" vibes. It's just a horror suspense story. Unlike Loch Ness however, Mazey Day isn't that great. It's just a bit ridiculous, although I gotta admit the climax is a bit fun and the acting is also good.

This episode is about the life of paparazzi, and how they can affect lives, specifically celebrities. The story doesn't have technology commentary or any sci-fi elements or something that is typical of Black Mirror, which is disappointing because we waited like three years or something FOR THIS??

Black Mirror: Loch Henry (2023)
Season 6, Episode 2
7/10
Surprising twist, but...
18 June 2023
Loch Henry is a mystery horror where a couple goes to a quiet and picturesque Scottish town to make a documentary.

Loch Henry might be one of the creepiest episodes yet for me. However...I dunno but it feels like this episode is lost in the Black Mirror series. It lacks the vibes of the previous Black Mirror stories, which are usually very bizarre with often sci-fi elements or something and they all have at least some technology commentary. This has none of those, or maybe I just didn't see it. Loch Henry feels like a normal typical horror mystery. The good thing is that it works as a horror mystery, it is indeed quite eerie with a surprising twist. The acting is also good, with Monica Dolan giving a great performance.

However, I'm not a fan of the editing, it's not that great-looking for me. The ending also left me feeling dissatisfied. I feel like this would've been better if it was a stand-alone mini series or short movie or something, but not for a Black Mirror episode.

TLDR: Overall, Loch Henry is quite a creepy horror mystery with a great twist but it the lacks "Black Mirror" vibes. Editing not that great, great acting though especially Monica Dolan.

Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful (2023)
Season 6, Episode 1
6/10
Quite entertaining but flawed
16 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When I thought it was already cancelled, Black Mirror is finally back after many years. Finally. In this episode, Annie Murphy stars as Joan, an average woman who is very shocked to find out that her life is suddenly made into a TV series on a streaming site. Imagine that.

Joan Is Awful is an episode that shows the dangers of the internet. The internet and many apps/websites know so much about us because we are unsuspecting about the things we click. Many apps/sites can exploit us, so be careful and read the terms and conditions you guys lol :D

Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy are both great and there are some entertaining parts, particularly the scenes where she finds out about her life being turned into a series and also the church scene. While that is the case, the climax is really underwhelming and predictable. It just didn't do enough for me, you know what I mean? It left me feeling just a little bit dismayed.

While Joan Is Awful is quite entertaining and not really awful, it is definitely one of the weakest Black Mirror episodes I've seen.

The Square (2017)
8/10
A weird, good film
16 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Square is about a middle-aged curator of an art museum. He is divorced, has two kids who hate each other, and is trying to exhibit an art piece called The Square, which is just a literal square on a pavement.

The film is a satire that makes fun of pretentious "art pieces" and hypocritical "art experts" and such. I find it brilliant and funny. The main character himself is the best example for a hypocritical "art expert", a striking scene is when he gets interviewed and he doesn't really even know what he's saying at times. The film also offers a sad view of the society we currently live in.

I do find the whole film very entertaining as a whole, but at times the script doesn't seem to know what it's really all about, so things can be a bit of a mess.

I still highly recommend this movie.

Shocking
13 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The White Ribbon is the story of a small rural town in Germany. Set a year before World War I, strange--and violent--things begin to awaken the sleepy village. The film, narrated by a schoolteacher, has an ensemble cast.

This drama mystery film may be uncomfortable to watch, sometimes even shocking. The mystery aspect is only a small part of the film. Overall, it deals with heavy themes including rape, incest, and physical abuse. The film also shows social class division, the mistreatment of women and children, and religious hypocrisy---all things that can happen anywhere in the world. The film also shows birth of evil. It shows that there is always root of evil, that evil is not random, and in the movie we can see how the joyless and extremely suffocatingly strict household made the clergyman's kids, particularly the older ones, to rebel...in a violent way. I read reviews that the film being set in Germany may also be an allegory of the birth of Nazism, which makes it more chilling if you think it that way.

Close (I) (2022)

Painful experience
7 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory."

Close is about male friendship, growing together, and then growing apart, and the aftermath of losing someone. It's about social pressure, it's about...quite a lot of things. Just be prepared to get heartbroken. I felt so sad after the film ended. It definitely left me feeling a bit emotional. The two young actors are superb and it's surprising considering that Close is their debut film.

The film is beautifully photographed, and I also love the score. Everything about this film is very fine, hence I give it 10 stars. It's very close to perfect. It's a film that will somehow always stay in me.

Surrealist film
1 June 2023
I'm in a Cannes mood last night, so I'm trying to watch any Palme d'Or nominees/winners. This showed on Netflix so I decided to watch it.

Yadon Ilaheyya or Divine Intervention is a black comedy film set in Israel. It's one of those movies that really isn't about anything. It shows vignettes of different people on their daily routine, and suddenly it will shock you with ABSURD moments. It also has very little dialogues.

This is an absurdist film that also shows the conflict happening in Israel. It has one of the most original style of filmmaking I've seen. Honestly, I wasn't really bored. There is one problem for me though. Honestly, I don't really know much about the politics in Israel so I didn't really get some of it, like the meaning of the flying balloon for instance. I wish they gave some Eli5, like how the movie Argo explained things before starting. Before watching this or any kinds of movies like this, I guess you gotta research or google some Eli5 articles about it before watching so you gotta at least understand some of it.
