The Stuff Nightmares are Made Of
3 April 2008
I don't even know what to say about this show other than it is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen. The puppets are so scary that its just plain hard to look at. I'm a big fan of horror but I can't even watch this show: it makes your skin crawl. The puppets look frightening and somehow sickening, the story lines are vulgar and dumb but those Puppets! What twisted minds even came up with this?! I can't think of a good reason for watching this show unless you are totally desensitized to horror films- then this show may be your last chance at a good, genuine scare. If I had seen this show, even a commercial, as a kid I would probably be too afraid to watch TV for the remainder of my childhood!

Supernatural (2005–2020)
3/10
Had potential but poorly executed; only Ackles makes it worth watching
3 May 2007
This show had as much potential as any monster-of-the-week series that preceded it. Namely, The X-Files (early seasons), Night Stalker, Night Gallery, etc. Supernatural, however, is written in such a way as to make it nearly impossible to watch without getting the overwhelming urge to change the channel. The show moves along too slowly and somehow lacks the suspense needed to carry a drama like this. Only the supernaturally gorgeous Jensen Ackles makes this show so popular and watchable. I have to admit that I only leave it on in the background so I can admire the actor, but the dialog and story lines are insufferable. The acting for the most part is decent; the actors just need better material to work with.

Monster Man (2003)

A fun weekend movie with some decent chills
3 April 2007
I caught this movie on the Sci-Fi channel recently. It actually turned out to be pretty decent as far as B-list horror/suspense films go. Two guys (one naive and one loud mouthed a**) take a road trip to stop a wedding but have the worst possible luck when a maniac in a freaky, make-shift tank/truck hybrid decides to play cat-and-mouse with them. Things are further complicated when they pick up a ridiculously whorish hitchhiker. What makes this film unique is that the combination of comedy and terror actually work in this movie, unlike so many others. The two guys are likable enough and there are some good chase/suspense scenes. Nice pacing and comic timing make this movie more than passable for the horror/slasher buff. Definitely worth checking out.

Magic (1978)

A good enough film, but not nearly as good as the book
2 March 2007
As an avid fan of older horror flicks, I was delighted to find a movie about one of the scariest things on earth- the ventriloquist dummy. The storyline is good: a shy, mentally unstable magician finds success through his more outgoing half, an obnoxious dummy named Fats. He soon finds, however, that Fats is possessive and will do anything, even kill, to keep Corky to himself. As Corky descends further into madness, he struggles to free himself from the deadly hold Fats now possesses over him, posing the question: Who is truly the puppet? Anthony Hopkins portrays Corky brilliantly, and the movie is certainly creepy, but it fails to develop the character of Corky enough to fully express the personal struggle between the man and his psychosis. To fully appreciate the story as a psychological thriller, I strongly recommend reading the novel by William Goldman first. It will give the film a much more terrifying dimension.

Dinotopia (II) (2002)
2/10
How does stuff like this get made???!!!
22 October 2006
I only rented Dinotopia because I saw it at my local video store and noticed that Wentworth Miller was on the cover. Of course it looked stupid just from the box cover, but I'm a huge fan of Wentworth so I rented it.

There are no words for how lame this movie is. The acting is horrible (yes, surprisingly even Wentworth Miller seemed awkward and spit his lines out WAY too fast). There is a storyline but the poor effects, bad acting, and ridiculous dialog take away any chance this film had of being watchable. Maybe the actors felt so stupid interacting with cheap looking animatronic dinosaurs that they just didn't even try to give any heart to their performance.

Seriously, your plane crashes at sea nearly drowning you and killing your father and you don't seem in the least bothered by this? And then, you find yourself on an island where dinosaurs still exist and you only seem mildly surprised? Maybe a kid would enjoy this, but anyone over seven will just laugh.

Tourist Trap (1979)
7/10
Truly one of a kind!
9 April 2006
First, I am rating this film as a horror flick, comparing it only to other horror films and not all movies in general.

I am a true horror buff and have seen just about everything imaginable from Silent film to Italian giallo and I have to say Tourist Trap now ranks as one of my personal favorites.

The formula for a great horror film is a given from the start: four teens trapped at a desolate old tourist museum run by a seemingly kind but off-beat lonely old man; it may seem like your typical slasher film, but it really is not; and the film really capitalizes on everyones' natural fear of mannequins and dummies (you know you wouldn't want to be trapped with a bunch of wax figures, let alone moving, talking ones!). Tourist Trap doesn't just use plain old department store dummies either; these are some of the creepiest figures ever conjured up in horror history! With a generally likable cast and an excellent performance from Veteran film star Chuck Conners, you'll find yourself on the edge of your seat honestly not knowing what will happen next. A few surprise twists, great hide-and-seek chase scenes, and an effectively ubercreepy atmosphere make Tourist Trap a must see, brilliant cult piece that goes beyond "slasher" and actually touches on Psychological Thriller.

Given the competent acting, VERY eerie setting, nice effects for the time it was made, and originality executed in the story not to mention a bizarre and unpredictable ending, this film is definitely worth hunting down a copy. In fact, Tourist Trap puts to shame many of it's modern day counterparts.

One of the better recent horror flicks
18 February 2004
I've noticed a lot of people calling this movie "crap" but I have to disagree. It is fun to watch and keeps you watching, it is fast-paced and surprisingly, somewhat original too. All the horror movies these days seem to rip off the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so it was refreshing to see that it was not a TCM or belated "Scream" knock-off.

The main characters are likeable enough, at least I thought so, and the all important death scenes are fairly interesting and creative.

Sure, it may not be the most intelligent film, but horror flicks were never meant to be, and its definately one of the better ones to come out of Hollywood as of late. Well worth renting.

The Dentist (1996)
Watching this is more painful than a root canal.
28 September 2003
My title summary pretty much says it all. "The Dentist" is stupid, predictable, and not even scary in the least. To add insult to injury, it is poorly acted, and the script is laughable.

The concept of a killer dentist could make for a fun movie, but this film is the opposite. It's just a bad spin on a good idea.

Unless you have insomnia and can't get to sleep any other way, I don't recommend watching this film. If you see it on the shelf and have the urge to rent it, WALK AWAY. Rent "Dr. Giggles" instead.

Dr. Giggles (1992)
Very dated, but entertaining and creepy
28 September 2003
I rented this movie one night from the B-list video store in town, more or less for lack of anything else to do. I expected it to be really lame, and boring, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually quite good.

A mental patient who believes that he is a doctor escapes the psych- ward, and returns to wreak murderous havoc on the town that he escaped from as a child after the "townsfolk" stoned his demented physician father to death.

Typical of the horror genre, there is the young, innocent heroine, who saves the day, and her not-so-innocent friends who aren't so lucky.

What sets this film apart is that it is original and creative, considering it came out before the Scream flicks. There are some really good, unusual death scenes. Not gory, but unique. It is also very creepy, and it moves fast, and never really drags. Holly Marie Combs is very good in this movie, and you actually care what happens to her character.

Bottom Line: A fun, humorous, creepy film to watch.

Maniac (1980)
Pure Crap
28 September 2003
I've always been a fan of low-budget 80's horror flicks, and I've seen my fair share of "crap", but this film really defines the word.

A homicidal maniac who had childhood issues with his now dead mother goes on a murdering spree, killing and mutilating random women, and nailing their scalps to mannequins in his house. That's pretty much the gist of it. No real plot, storyline, or point. The heroine who stops him (kind of), isn't even introduced until the last fifteen minutes of the film, making it impossible for the viewer to even care what happens. The acting is awful, the script minimal (thank God).

You'll be amazed at how bad cheap horror can really be, and even more amazed at how this movie ever was made in the first place.
