Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
Liked it and didn't like it.
Weird feeling when i left theatre. I love Kevin Smith, I always have. Even mall rats when most thought it was a failure. This movie made me laugh with all the typical Kevin Smith comedy topics, but there was no surprises here as far as story was concerned. No depth. Chasing Amy had much more depth in terms of relationships, how the manifested and where they went. I know this is different since we are dropped into a relationship, but the way in culminated felt so peanut butter and jelly. It was like, okay lets think of the most contrived ending we can and go home. I was disappointed, I was expecting more. OR maybe the ending just read better on paper. Either way I recommend this movie, but I guess to some degree you are supposed to know exactly where it is going. So I shouldn't have been surprised when it did. The ride was worth it nevertheless.
Why Did I Get Married? (2007)
Okay.
This is the first Tyler Perry film I have seen. I had heard good and bad about his films. I went in open and ready to absorb. All and all i feel the film was right down the middle. The performances weren't bad, the aesthetic wasn't bad the story felt overly contrived at points but others it didn't. I was entertained, for the most part. Would I see another Tyler Perry, film...sure. I am a white man and did I get all the jokes and relate, yes I did. What overall bearing that has I do not know but the message boards seem to be flooded with racial overtones so I felt it necessary to throw that in there. My girlfriend, who is black enjoyed it about as much as I did. She has seen other Tyler Perry films. All and all I think he is doing some great things as a whole.
Blindness (2008)
Woah!
I am new here and to leaving comments, but saw this film yesterday with girlfriend. She was scared it was going to be a zombie film. I knew it was not, but to me there were things more horrifying than zombies in this film. It was impressively shot, the aesthetic was engaging, but I felt like ugliness was just being rammed down my throat story wise. I know it is based on a book (which I have not read so forgive me there) and I know that adapting books to screen can be difficult, but i felt as if there were pieces missing, which there might have been from the book. I understand the exploration into human nature, but man we see this everyday. My girlfriend had to walk out during one part, not to return. I stayed only to be disappointed, not completely because the film on many levels was intense and shows for a great filmmaker.
Dimples (2008)
Very Creepy.
This film went places i did not expect it to go. It seemed typical on the surface, but really wasn't. As well, the over all ambiance and tone of the film was very creepy, well made. The acting was great for a horror film ( i know that sounds strange, but I have come to expect horrible acting in horror films) The cinematography was nice, a little to hand held for me at times, but that seems to be to "go to" aesthetic for horror films, well films in general these days. It worked in parts, but when things settled it did get a bit annoying. Nevertheless, the film flowed well kept me intrigued and ended a bit abruptly, but the TWIST i never saw coming. Left a definite impression.
