The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Pleasantly Surprised.
I'd like to begin by saying, I am by no means a rabid Twilight fan. I felt that the first film, while somewhat entertaining, wasn't terribly good, mostly due to the Directorial style of Catherine Hardwick. However when I entered the theatre for New Moon, I tried to keep an open mind.
I was blown away by how different this film was as compared to the first. While the first movie was choppy, shot almost exclusively in blue tones, and had a painfully odd and out-of-place soundtrack, I felt that New Moon flowed smoothly, and was pleasing to the eye with it's gold tones. A more Indie-rock based soundtrack, and more tasteful score left me hungering to buy the soundtrack.
I also found better acting, where instead of swallowing there lines and over acting the teen angst (as was in Twilight) they took a more playful and classic approach to the script. And I found myself laughing through the whole film, at the much more humorous approach to the story.
I felt that without the Twilight name on it, this film still would have held it's own in the box office simply because it was an entertaining and well made film. Sure it was corny, silly, occasionally showing the fact that it was made from a plot-hole-laced, under-developed, badly characterized novel. But, on the whole, I quite enjoyed it. And I plan to recommend it to all of my friends.
8 out of ten stars is entirely warranted, I think.
Daddy's Dyin'... Who's Got the Will? (1990)
Why did I waste my life on this movie?
This movie is made of fail. The characters are unlikable, under-developed, and annoying as hell. The story is marauding and pointless, and the ending is confusing and just plain bad. I still have yet to figure out if this is supposed to be a comedy or a drama. Everyone in this film is awful and hates there lives, and this movie makes a lame attempt to make it funny. When I received this movie from Netflix I was expecting it to be bad, just look at the title. But, I was expecting something that was bad enough to be funny. This just wasn't. It wasn't good and it wasn't bad enough to be good. Please don't waste two hours of your life on this movie, IT IS NOT WORTH IT!
Twilight (2008)
Not Perfect, but Really Pretty Good
After seeing the slaughter of several books turned movies, I came into Twilight with surprisingly low expectations. I am a huge fan of all four books and had been counting the days until the release of Twilight for about two years. After walking out of the midnight showing , all I could think was "wow". Although things from the book had been cut and changed the main story stayed true to the book. The actors were phenomenal, the story was really good, and it was very well filmed. The special effects were really the only part that didn't thrill me, as they were relatively low budget. Coming into the movie, I was worried that it would be too overly serious because most of the trailers had given that impression. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had just the right balance of comedy and drama. In fact, I found myself chuckling my way through several scenes. Although it wasn't perfect and I missed some things from the book, I found that the movie ultimately reflected the book very well and I enjoyed it thoroughly. In fact, I'm planning on seeing it in the theater for the third time tomorrow.
Eragon (2006)
What Were They Thinking
About three years ago a friend of mine pushed the Eragon book at me, telling me that I just had to read it. And, after reading it I was completely in love with it. So as you can imagine I was very excited when the movie came out. I saw it the very first day, thinking that it would be just the best movie. I was very angry as I left the theater. They cut out over half the story, and the story they did leave in really didn't make any sense at all. The acting was poor, the special effect left much to be desired, and I was utterly confused. The Urgals looked like big scary guys with too many tattoos, Murtagh appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the story, Solembum was nowhere to be seen, and the twins never bothered to show up. If that wasn't enough they sent Roran off to avoid being drafted for the war, and Saphira did a years worth of growing after fifteen seconds in a lightning storm. What was going on? I have no idea. Even Rachel Wiesz's wonderful performance as the voice of Saphira couldn't save this one. So once again, what were they thinking? One of the best fantasy novels written in recent years, has been absolutely slaughtered in this very badly made adaptation.
