Quello che cerchi (2001)
an hidden gem
I saw this film on DVD, after seeing Puccioni's second feature at the theater, here in saint Petersburg, Very different film indeed, but with something in common with this. After seeing both films I believe he is one of the best new director from Italy. Quello che cerchi (что йшет он - in Russian) is a moody, personal film which makes you trip in sea of continuous change, where identity and behavior continuously shift. It's an unpredictable movie, with sparks of great imagination- I liked it a lot, but only give a 8 instead of a ten because I liked Riparo better, because it is a more controlled film, with a powerful comment on modern society. I still praise что йшет он because it has a rare force to renew an old theme like the search for one's origin and identity. They are both very humanistic and very interesting.
Aleksandra (2007)
a quiet, powerful critique of war
Galina Vishnevskaya is an uncommon and powerful character, someone you wouldn't expect in a soldier camp. still in her mischievous way she is able to ridicules both military discipline and stretch her human hand on the other side. There is a sense of positivity in this film a sign that if normal people could talk to each other than something could change in the Caucasian republics. Galina is a grandmother and she behaves uniformly when she speaks to her nephew. she behaves as good neighbor when she visits the Chechen woman. In the monochromatic world of the film, in this war zone, nothing tragic happens, but the film penetrate deeply in the mind of the viewer letting understand better how an enemy is built and how a senseless war is fought.
Riparo (2007)
best Italian movie
I saw this film yesterday night and I really enjoyed it. I don't' understand the comment from the guy from Holland, I thought it's totally believable that a border guard used to the flow of tourist speaks Italian. OK, there may be some not coherent moments or continuity issues, so what? If a film like this totally draws into its world, it means it works. Actors were wonderful, and the situation doesn't have an easy way out. I believe it's a complex, film with a lot of issues and it will stay with me forever, I strongly suggest you try to watch it as soon as possible. I didn't see such a good Italian movie in a long, long time.
