Constellation (2024)
I tried. I failed.
I really wanted to give this a go and enjoy it but damn, its so terribly family orientated its not for me.
Like, many people love Sci fi for its escapism but this cheap nasty drama is all about soap like acting and story telling. Theres just nothing that makes a great impact for sic fi lovers. Its about children and a parent who obv loves there children so much that the plot leaves far too much sci fi out ti include far too much cheap family drama in.
Sci fi needs to veer away from this cheap family soap drama at warp factor 10. FOr the lvoe of god, this is everything wrong with sci fi. All about cheap family drama, not intelligent ideas and the future.
Shôgun (2024)
5 Episodes in and its Samurai High brow heaven
Very pleased with this show so far. Seems to pay homage to the source material. And is beautiful to watch.
Casting seems great, costumes superb, little SFX used also brilliant. Feudal Japanese seems incredibly realistic as much as it is complex. All the leads including the son are great actors. I wish I had read the book rather than watched the Richard Chamberlain series many moons ago. BUT so far, so excellent.
Its probably gonna get some unfair comparisons to GoT but so what, yes its poltiical and yes its similar, but its just brilliant masterclass writing of West meets East with plenty of historical flair.
I really hope you enjoy it as much as I am right now. X. And I hope I can read some material on any mistakes on the Japanese Feudal era as its quite captivating coming from a Westerners point of view.
Nevertheless I am really enjoying this historical drama.
Beacon 23 (2023)
TRUE SCI FI FOR TRUE BELIEVERS IN SCI FI
I'm only up to episode 4, and thus this isnt a review of the whole series.
Neverthe less, I have a passionate love of sci fi and story telling, and this show hits all the marks. I also have really high standards of sci fi. Im a proper Nerd Lord and lvoer of all geekdom.
I went into it blind, didnt read a single review, only knew Lena Headey was in it. Shes great in most things, most people know her from GoT but I liked her in The Parole Officer. (Im a big Steve Coogan Alan Partridge Fan as much as I am a sci fi fan!).
And she delivers. She knows her art. I love that shes a seasoned actress and knows her stuff. And Also that shes high enough in her career to be allowed her northern accent to shine through, which i'm biased in being a Geordie.
I love the set, its got attention to detail and feels like a real life like lighthouse of the far future in far off space. The sets are marvellous and I love the little touches like authentic expensive wood desks and chair for the master in his/her domain like all the great ships of the past and colonies. Its a mark of respect and richness and an employee high up in the food chain of responsibility.
Then theres the costumes. Excellent again. Real attention to detail. All looks great and real. Well thought out. Real believability.
I suppose you could complain about the show using old sci fi tropes, but I really think this show uses them enough to build a decent sci fi world of itself. The Soldiers 'charging' ability (or charging abilities? ;) ). The Stimpacks. The Weapons. The Guns. All seem to be made and thought out with love of the sci fi genre.
The 1st episode was a bit naff in a few little ways, but thats the wants of a seasoned Sci fi fan. The mystery we were given was not epxlained enough and as an audience member I thought that if there were more explanations then more acceptance of the show would be in order, but show runners and stories love there mysteries to keep u engaged.
The 2nd Episode then pushed on the world building with some good violent narratives and methodology/motivation to the cast and new cast. A complex world in a universe with mistakes , like the real world where people suffering somewhere will always have consequences.
And the 4th episode (yeah the 3rd was good dont worry, I just dont feell it worth a mention), but the 4th had some real skill in story telling and sci fi. Its up there with 2001 A Space Odessy. YES. That amazing film by Kubrick. I wont say any more for fear of spoilers but wow. I was hooked and it was brilliant. Plus anyone and anything commenting on nasty billionniares is really needed in this world right now, if u bother to look at what Peter Thiel, Murdoch and Musk have been upto lately.
So all in all, im very excited to keep watching this show and hope it carries on. I have read the SILO books and was a big fan, then the show came out and loved the show runners attempts at delivering that story. It succeeded imho, I really enjoyed everything about it - yeah yeah it was a bit like fallout games but so what, it still delivered a great narrative of a potential realistic world and story.
So please dont judge this show by the harsh reviews, check it out yourself and go with it, as always, dont expect Star Wars big budget amazingness in every episode.
The cast and crew are really attempting to join the legendary sci fi shows like Babylon 5 and The Expanse and Star Trek. And so I hope you can try and then enjoy this show.
Yours Sincerely,
A Big Sci Fi Fan.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
WTF do u want?
Its everything u want. A really solid well written brilliantly directed excellently delivered horror.
U dont see this perfect specimen of a horror flick for what it is then u are sadly motivated by nefarious forces.
The world needs more decent films like this. At every opportunity the medium of horror is satisfied... And yes, theres dissapointment if you are a pathetic always angry and hateful guest of horror art.
Be wary, like the guest of the Demeter, there are forever nay sayers that no matter what, there are.
Sound, direction, twidt...etc all u want.
A high seas horror. Ffs.
Why does this need 600+ ?
The USA vs. Bergdahl (2017)
Its not 9 tbh
Hello,
I watched it. I served. I cant erxuse Beau...but he wandered off his base.
He defenilty didnt join the taleban....but he made himself a target in more ways than none... Republicans lie to demonise peeps..and they ove to demonise left wingers as anti war triators.
Watch the documentary...hes not left or right. He wanted to go beyond his base....that it, a walk away from his idiot war mates. Iys so crazy he walked out of the areas of control...but in his hometime he said repeatedly he loves wandering and going amongst forests and woods,.
And that means hes a good guy, not a traitor or scumbag.
At ease and carryon.
This Time with Alan Partridge (2019)
A U Boat Commander Would kill for that velocity!
Hm, MAYBE Its time to take a fresh look at Shell...or This Time With Alan Partridge...
Well over a tonne, teeth like giant daggers, top speed of 20 knots...A German U-Boat Commander would kill for that velocity!
The Nay Sayers? They toss Alan / Penguins around like a rag doll and Batter them!...Wait for it...for FUN!
Alan's Back. Cash Back.
"I don't know whether to eat him up or wear him! I suppose Eskimoes do both..."
"Well You Find Leopard Seals in the Antarctic..."
"The Falklanders, then."
JACKANACKANORY. JURASSIC PARK. Wait till I Tell DAN.
"When I heard that, I had the overwhelming sense of... Gary Numan"
Might Not Be a Woman, might be a very smooth, fat teenage Boy.... We Must'nt!
I personally enjoyed it very much and can't wait for the next episode. I Cannot stress that enough!
Lynn... "Your Solid."
"Not like that slut from the bible. "
Sidekick. Simon? Once in a generation a Genius bursts onto the scene... more often A bit more frequently, a fairly gifted person wanders in.
Happy to wait to see where "the big white bird' Simon goes through the series, I don't mind slow burners if they pay out.
"Move Over Giles Brandreth!"
"Many liken antibiotics to giving a box of chocolates to an angry spouse"
I Will be tuning in next week....but "We Must'nt'.
The Magicians (2015)
LIke Harry Potter but completly devoid of intelligence, wit, thought or skill
If you had a few weeks to live and Harry Potter was the best thing in your life, i would still give this a miss.
Its just a carbon copy but with Americanisation plastered all over it. Worse its a Canadian show...im so disappointed in my Canadian brothers, I thought Canadians had better class and intelligence. Usually they do and only Americans like absolute drivel like this without any intelligence to scripts, drama, scenarios and the like.
Honest, you might like this if you are a teenage feck-wit who has never read any books or developed your mind...and unfortunately im sure there is a big demand for such shows thanks to the dumbing down of mankind by Rupert Murdoch, but I for one dislike this in the most polite of terms.
Marvel One-Shot: Item 47 (2012)
American Justice
If you find an Alien gun thats fallen from the sky, what do you do? Hand it in? Sell it? Learn to use it and be a Superhero? Well, if you are a Hollywood cliché good looking American couple then you figure out how to get the gun working (though no one on the planet has been able to do to highlight how clever this good looking chap is), and then go on an Armed Robbery & Killing spree for easy cash.
SO what happens when you are finally captured for multiple armed robberies, murders, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder of a S.H.I.E.L.D Agent, wanton destruction and bad acting? A job with S.H.I.E.L.D of course! If these two characters end up being The Wasp and a Henry Pym stand in (with as much effort on this script as the script for the sequel) then I have a feeling that the Avengers may shape up to be as good as Iron Man II.
In other-words a monstrosity for anyone with half a brain and a love of the Comics.
Pushing Daisies (2007)
Bringing freshness to television as much as the Piemaker does to dead bodies
Pushing Daisies truly is a landmark in Television as an art form. Everything seems to pay homage to Amelie and Tim Burton, but so what, in a world where fresh ideas are distinctly rare, this show will guarantee that you do not care about whether its fresh or not. It is just Brilliant.
I have been captivated from the start, the intelligent writing, the Directing to the backdrops and dialogue make this show the most incredible masterpiece since The Shield and The Wire (ok not exactly good comparisons but the beauty of Pushing Daisies is that it has no comparisons on television).
Truly addictive and an absolute pleasure. Perhaps like one of the Piemakers pies that get mentioned in such tantalising ways.
