Geostorm (2017)
Reminded me more of a low (very low) budget disaster movie
This was bad.... really bad! I am a big disaster movie fan and can sit through most things, but wow this was really boring.. the characters are shallow, predictable and the chemistry between them stilted and forced.
The special effects were OK, but you just didn't get any sense of the fear because there was no character that developed enough for you to fear for them.
I think a better movie would have been Gerard Butler developing the satellite system and saving the world from Global Warming in the first place.. at least that may have been believable.
I watched Geo Disaster on Syfy the other day and at the time was thinking that it would be a poor mans Geostorm.. but seriously it turned out to be the better of the two films.. that should tell you just how dreadful this film was. It only gets 2 because the special effects were OK.
What Happened to Monday (2017)
A fascinating exploration of government control in the name of good
This had been out on Netflix for a while and I hadn't really been drawn to watch it, but I am so glad I did.
The film portrays a dystopian future where overpopulation has lead those in power to create a one child rule, with chilling justifications for abhorable acts in the name of protecting humanity.
In a time when we already see more government interference and control in our own daily lives, its not too far of a stretch to consider a time when government might implement drastic measures to control population.
This film is a horrifying example of the peoples need to never allow this or anything like this, to ever happen.
Well written and thought provoking, I would definitely recommend watching this film.
Salvation (2017)
Getting better!
It did take a bit of getting into, but I have to say I am enjoying the story so far. I have a teenage daughter who likes it too, its not too heavy on the love side, but it has enough twists to make it interesting.
I am not sure it will get more than one season, but then again I watched Zoo and thought the same - and that series has got better and better.
We're going to keep watching in the hope that its given a chance to warm up and get into the story.
You, Me and the Apocalypse (2015)
Watching it - really just waiting for the collision
Normally I love these kinds of shows, but this one is getting a bit too stupid and not particularly funny.
Episode 8 and we had a teaser of a flourishing relationship between Jude and Celine, only to find he has hanged himself.
Scotty is forced by an FBI agent to choose between saving the world and his sister, with the FBI agent refusing to let the man who runs Project Saviour contact his team to save the day.
When he chooses project Saviour, his sister is re-arrested and promptly sentenced to death and despite Scotty sitting next to the President, he doesn't ask for a pardon for her.
I thought this was supposed to be about people learning to live and love life as they face the end of the world.. supposedly there are only a few days left...
I'd need a lot longer than that to work out where this plot is going.
Valkyrie (2008)
Brilliant Film
What an amazing film. I am not a real war film fan so I really wasn't sure I'd enjoy this film, but it was truly brilliant.
I was on the edge of my seat for most of the film, knowing how dangerous a situation these men were in and the risks they took. The fact that Hitler committed suicide and survived this assassination attempt, didn't detract from the plot at all.
It gives a real appreciation of war on Hitler from the German point of view.
I'd recommend it to anyone, even if war isn't your thing, its simply a brilliant film and well worth watching.
The Mist (2007)
The ending made me wish I'd never watched it.
This was a really good film, right up until the last 5 minutes.
I think part of the reason we watch horror, is to see triumph in almost impossible situations, I think it gives us hope in our ability to survive.
Having a child myself, I could imagine the horror when Drayton shot his son, and didn't have enough bullets for himself, only to find a minute later the cavalry arrived.. I wanted to grab a gun myself and shoot him to save him his pain.
I felt cheated of a feel good ending, all this rubbish about it being a brilliant ending, I hated it, and wanted to rewind all 126 minutes out of my life.. it really ruined the whole film.. either he should have got taken by the Leviathan or they should have got out. What a waste of time! We'd have been far better to have found that the store had been pulled into a different time/space and them being able to drive out of a crack, before it sealed up with the miserable sods left in the store all stuck there. I think that would have been better than the rubbish that I watched!
