Garfield: The Movie (2004)
Fabulous Graphics but not the Garfield I know...
Without a doubt the graphics in this movie are great. The rendering of Garfield is great and he is true to his original character in the books. However I was greatly disappointed with the rest of the characters: Jon has NEVER managed to impress the Vetinary nurse in the books for all his trying, and in this film, she seems to like him. But mostly I was disappointed with Odie, in that a 'real' dog was used for his character, as opposed to the comic-book character I am so used to. It could have been done, and it would have been better. Also Nermal wasn't quite the cute, cuddly obnoxious cousin of Garfield's that I expected him to be.
All in all, a bit of a downer for any fan of the original comic books/strips in regard to the characters and plot, but if you are a kid of today who is unfamiliar with the world of Garfield from the books, you may enjoy this a lot more.
Maybe Baby (2000)
Complete rubbish
I went to the cinema to see this film and walked out of it after about 40 minutes because it was completely unfunny and seemed to be rapidly decending to an all-time low of mindless drivel. This film is an all-time turkey in my book, - it left me wondering what on earth Hugh Grant's career has come to. On the other hand, if you find frustrated impotent men hilariously amusing then you'll probably like it, but then there would have to be something very wrong in your mind somewhere - I suggest you see a psychotherapist. I admit that the 'joke' is reasonably well executed on the first occasion it is used, and it didn't particularly bother me, but when 40 minutes later the film still hadn't moved on from the same, by now, very stale old joke, it began to become very irksome and before long I couldn't bear to sit and watch any more of this mindless dross and just left the cinema. It definately ranks as one of the worst movies I have ever seen for all the worst reasons. Tiresome and unfunny drivel.
My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988)
tedious rubbish
I remember watching this film at a freind's house. It was bland and uninteresting. It just didn't seem to go anywhere, right up to the point at about 2 hours when I just stood up and went home, bored stupid by this lame film. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody, except possibly my worst enemy ;) Truely awful.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Fantastic Film - A 'Must See'!
This is a film for the thinking sci-fi fan. It delves into the secrets of mans evolution on a grand scale. The scale of this film is almost undescibably epic. An awesome masterpiece of a film, beatifully directed in every detail by Stanley Kubrick.
Ok, thats the praise out of the way, you can guess its just about the best film I can think of really, but it is a long, epic, film, so best to view it in widescreen (it was originally filmed in cinemascope, so get it as wide a possible - and to get the best out of this film you want DVD, surround sound, the lot! The musical score is just as good as the video side of it. The music is predominantly classical, which is unhurried, so be ready to be patient and give this film the time it deserves to develop - don't turn it off after half an hour. You get the idea that this is not a space soap opera? No way - this film is deep, very deep indeed.
An absolute classic, can't really fault it. An interesting nerd fact is that the computer's name 'HAL' is one letter shifted alphabetically from the letters 'IBM'. So there u go, a nerd fact for you. But this is not a sci-fi nerd film, this is a classic movie about evolution that just happens to be set in a sci-fi theme, that is artisically excellent.
The ending is just psychedelic really. There are parallels with the sort of evolution shifing talked about by Terrance McKenna here.
And you have to just marvel at the level of the special effects considering its age, its a bit of creative genius at work, no doubt about it.
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Hilarious!
As I'm not a fan of horror, but a huge fan of comedy, it was hilarious to see so many parodies pulled off successfully in so little time!
The Exorcist, House on Haunted Hill and The Haunting are but a few of the horrors spoofed in this film.
Scary Movie 2 is of much higher quality than the first, and is laugh-a-minute. I've now seen it 15 times - at least, and I'm still not tired of it.
Any downsides? If you include not being able to breathe because there are so many laughs one after the other, then that's it!
Trust me, Comedy is my Life. (I watched this with my partner and it had him in stitches too.)
