After Hours (1985)
so so
too short for important German history
the biggest problem this movie has is: he just too short with his 150 minutes. he wants to show 10 complex years between 1967 and 1977 based on the book by stefan aust which has 900 sides.
and the movie wants to show every important moment from this 10 years. so think over: the lord of the rings has probably around 1300 sides (to give an example) and the director needed around 9 hours to show this in 3 movies by showing not even all. to give you much more emotions you should make a whole season about it (for TV so i guess) OR you want to show just a part of the story. so sometimes the movie did it right but at least since Meinhof will be dying the director show us in the last hour or so a compilation of important historic scenes in such a speed that you will get lost.
too many gunshot scenes, too many murdered persons by loosing the emotions of that years.
i was at that time just a few years old (by starting with 1972), but the younger generations who has no clue about it and was also not reading the book or so will probably not understand the whole thing.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
a real heart warmer.
without any questions: a good movie. like forest gump it's a heart warmer. quite well produced, but not as good as his masterpiece TRAINSPOTTING, because that one was outstanding, quite extraordinary by almost everything. why this movie got an Oscar for the music score, i really don't know, but who knows, perhaps there was not a better one this year. for sure i can watch this one twice or even more over the years. i enjoyed pretty much the actors Anil Kapoor as the moderator (outstanding performance!!!) and Ankur Vikal as the gangster Maman. it's a more untypical movie by danny boyle, so probably this has something to do with his co director. it's part time funny, but don't expect a fully funny one, sometimes it's just the opposite. the story is part time a bit unreal (when the winner get arrested by the moderator or the more or less whole story about India), but this doesn't matter. you can for sure enjoy this one, it's almost impossible to say it's not a good one.
Milk (2008)
not as good as i was suppose
a movie you can enjoy to watch, just for once. i am not that sure if you really will watch this one twice. Also i was a little little bit disappointed about Sean Penn, although he is besides josh brolin the reason number one to watch this movie. of course he plays very well as usual , but not that enormous like the extraordinary performance from mickey rourke in the Wrestler, the movie which i watched before. so i was thinking "ok, rourke was that amazing, penn must even be more amazing." so i was disappointed. the movie will give you not even one surprise. it's well done and that's it. i guess i saw hundreds of movies like this one which i already have not any longer in my mind. reason number two could be the time frame the movie shows. it's interesting to get that informations.
Viskningar och rop (1972)
a hypnotic, a destructive , a horror movie.
i bought almost every movie from Bergman, but just at a certain time i could watch one of them. so from all the movies i have from him i just watched till now 4 masterpieces (seventh seal, fanny and Alexander, wild strawberries, persona) and now i took the time to watch cries and whispers. for me it was sometimes a real horror movie i had to starring on. i was not able to look at some important sequences. the title is program. everything else is doing in the same way. the whole movie contains more or less just one color which is red. then there is the black of the clothes and just in one dream sequence a white. the whole movie is so deep you can not imagine. the sound is minimal, the dialog too, each breath by the actors let you be speechless. wild strawberries is almost a happy movie by seeing this one. it's a hypnotic one, which leaves you quite alone after seeing it. a truly masterpiece in every aspects.
In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden (1978)
Falling in a hole.
I watched this movie and after my first reaction wasn't that clear. sometimes boring perhaps? but then i was thinking about it, more and more and it touched me more and more and in a strange way i compared this one with the all time classic x-mas movie IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE from Capra. in the mood way. Interesting to say, that also in 13 MOONS there is an angel like in the x-mas Movie. It's the character ROTE ZORA. While Capra's angel had success, it's will know, it will not happen in 13 Moons.
of course while you will learn by the Frank Capra movie how important each human being is in the world we live in, Fassbinder gives you here the lesson how hopeless life can be. So while you have tears in your eyes by watching IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, you see all the hope in this movie and you know there will be a happy end. From the first second on in this movie you know, there will be no happy end. And you will have no tears in your eyes at the end, but perhaps you will be a little bit speechless. From Hollywood a movie like this never will come. This movie don't want to entertain you in a Hollywood way. so be prepared!
This movie is the most personal Fasssbinder for sure. He lost some weeks before his boyfriend. then he wrote in three days the whole script. Unbelievable to tell that he ALSO was responsible for BOOK/EDITING/CAMERA (Michael Ballhaus was asked for, but he couldn't)/PRODUCING/IDEA/EQUIPMENT and of course DIRECTING it. The Music score is very good (classic meets suicide (the new wave band) meets sixties rock'n roll meets Connie Francis). A terrific Volker Spengler as the main character as also a stunning Ingrid Caven.
Almost impossible to understand the whole plot when you have to read the English subtitles, it's absolutely recommend when you can speak German.
Beginning with the written introduction about the 13 Moons, through the slaughterhouse scene (which is remarkable for the whole movie, because here he shows us the Life and the Death, the hopeless the movie is about in a short sequence), through the next scene where elvira is lying very depressed on the bed while the record player plays a x-mas song (it's a wonderful life......), but the song has a scratch (hopeless again) to the important scene where elvira tries to become erwin again (but failed), the two hours of this movie is very sensitive. It's not a movie to watch between Forrest Gump and Star Wars (...). It's a movie which brings you back to the ground of earth. So honest that you feel pain.
Everyone will have a time in life in which he falls in a hole. This movie is showing that. A tragedy. OR a horror trip.
Du rififi chez les hommes (1955)
A classic Movie with many small mistakes in the story.
After seeing NAKED CITY and NIGHT AND THE CITY (which is still my favorite Dassin) I was more than excited to watch his "Masterpiece" (O-Word Criterion) RIFIFI.
Now i am a little bit disappointed about the story.
So I have at least these five questions in my mind:
1. In the final Countdown Louis Grutter shot from the inside a house the main Character Tony le Stéphanois. He couldn't know if he is still alive or not, but he didn't care about it and ran directly after it outside the house (with the money) to reach his car. So of course Tony wasn't dead and shot him. BIG QUESTIONMARK.
2. In another important scene the specialist in safes Cesar gave directly after the robbery as a present a diamond ring (which was a part of the robbery) a Woman which was working for Louis Grutter in a night bar. Stupid, because before this character wasn't THAT stupid. And of course Louis knew directly that Tony planned the jewel robbery. SMALL QUESTIONMARK.
3.After the Gangsters behind Louis Grutter murder Mario Ferrati and his wife,Tony and his best friend Joe planned a revenge against Louis gang. At the same time they don't care for the security of Joe's wife and his five years old child. Of course Louis gang kidnapped the son. CHEAP and SIMPLE.
4. The perfect heist: Of course this is the best 30min. long scene in the whole Plot, without any word spoken in the whole time, but was this a perfect heist?? Comparing with other movies which handle with this theme i could only smile when for example Tony was taken a fire-extinguisher to banned the alarm. Also too SIMPLE.
5. The Grutter gang went to the house of Mario, because they knew (however....) the jewels will be there. Then they murder Mario and his Wife. And then? They are not searching for it! NO. They ran directly out of the apartment. And more. They not observing the apartment after it so Tony can go after a while (which was the same day) inside to take the jewels. BIG QUESTIONMARK.
Over all: it's a good movie. Because of the brilliant 30min silent heist scene. Because of the very good cut (The end scene in the car through Paris is stunning) . Because of a very good actor called Jean Servais. Because of this Black/White fever you will get while watching it. Because of some other reasons too other user wrote about, but please don't tell me this is a stunning story.
Lola rennt (1998)
(one of the) Best German movie (so far) ??????
Of course, this is a good movie.
probably this German movie you have to find under the top 10 or 15 of the last 10 Years of German movies.
But as i can read an many comments, this should be one of the best German movies ever made, i have to say - STOP - probably you are too young to know all the really important movies of the expressionism time (or silent movie time) like DAS GOLEM, CALIGARI, NOSFERATU, METROPOLIS, M and so on as also the superb directors from the seventies/eighties like WERNER HERZOG or FASSBINDER, WENDERS or schlöndorff (of course TIN TIN DRUM).
And also for my little surprise (as a German) there were really good German movies in the last couple of years (or only months) like: DER FREIE WILLE, REQUIM, DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN (which is perhaps the best German movie since a decade) to name only a few.
Lola rennt is besides that a stunning one too, but has to be seen in the top 250 after probably other 20 German movies (probably some more). But most of the other excellent German movies aren't that funny, aren't that easy to watch or being a little bit too frustrating.
But let's say it like this: LOLA RENNT is probably the fastest German movie ever made (editing).
Days of Heaven (1978)
thank you for this paintings mr. malick
To make it short: it's like Scorsese said, when he saw the movie by the first time: MAKE EACH FRAME OF THIS MOVIE BIGGER AND THEN YOU COULD SEE IT LIKE A PAINTING IN A MUSEUM. He is right.
Most of the picture was shot right in the morning or at the magic hour or at night, which means Mr. Malick shot in average only 1 hour a day. Result: goose pimples by seeing it. POETIC PURE.
When you like this movie then take another poetic trip with THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE from VICTOR ERICE which is a Spanish director. probably the 2 poetic masterpieces from the seventies.
Apropos Spanish: the cinematography is by a Spanish - NESTOR ALMENDROS - which worked together over decades with ROHMER and TRUFFAUT, so thank you too mr. almendros.
I really have to think about similar results in other movies, but till now i have no idea.
A MUST SEE IN A THEATER!!!!!!
Now there is criterion release of this masterpiece and the digital transfer is outstanding.
Because of the "paintings": 10 from 10.
P.S.: the voice from the off by the character LINDA was alone worth to got an Oscar. The Soundtrack......NO, he didn't got it for this movie (Morricone), but why?????. The story? seemingly simple, but it isn't!
So i writing this, while i was buying 3 other copies today as a present for my best friends........i am still in this epic movie.
