The Maid (2014)
Absolutely Disgusting
I thought that MAYBE this movie was going to be a commentary on entitlement and abuse. But it is actually just a film rewarding an obnoxious, molesting, teenage sociopath with love from a gorgeous woman.
Jack, our freshly eighteen-year-old protagonist, is staying with his Father for a few days. Within two of these days, he falls in love with the older house maid. They share tragic stories with one another about him losing his Mother and she losing her son.
Jack decides to confess his love for this woman. When she initially rejects him because it's completely absurd, he manipulates her by saying she could replace his mom and he replace her son, so they could both share the affection they're missing. Except it's supposed to be romantic?? When she continues to reject him, he keeps guilting her for making him feel bad. So she pops her top off and let's him kiss her bare chest for a while.
She jumps up and cries and runs away. So, rather than leaving the country like a normal person, he confronts her and guilts her even more over her son, saying she's abandoning him like she did her kid. Then he threatens to off himself if she doesn't love him back.
So.... now she does love him. She was hiding her feelings. This is where I expected it to turn into a lesson about manipulative love and how she feels threatened by him.
No. She just loves him. And they continue to have an affair throughout the movie. And he knocks her up before actually leaving the country.
This movie took itself so seriously and tried really hard to be serious. But it is such a gross vision of romance that nobody should ever have to face.
Bad script, bad idea, bad casting.
