Arrival (2016)
Not like anything you've ever seen
This film is absolutely incredible, and one of the best science fiction films of all time. This isn't your standard alien film, instead of killing or destroying the aliens, this film focuses on communication with the aliens, which would be accurate if aliens actually came to our planet. This film also shows how people would react to aliens coming to Earth, which is pretty great. The leads Louise Banks and Ian Donnelly, played by Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, respectively, are both likable and not pretentious in the least despite them being experts in their fields. Louise is a linguist and Ian is a theoretical physicist. Now, on to the great things about this film. It has incredible visuals and music, a fantastic story and a smart script, and one of the best twists ever in films. The ending is overwhelming in terms of emotional impact, I get emotional every time I watch it, and that doesn't happen to me often. The film focuses on themes such as parenthood, communication with extraterrestrial intelligence, and life itself. It's one of the best films of the century and has the emotional impact of all the Pixar films combined plus Titanic. The fact that this didn't win best picture is a testament to how stupid the Academy is.
Stranger Things (2016)
Started out good, bad now
Back when I first saw Stranger Things, I was impressed by the focus on childhood wonder and the bond between the original kids. Now, the series has lost a lot of its luster. Seasons 1-2 were engaging, fun, dramatic, unique, and focused a lot on character. Seasons 3-4 lost a lot of the fun of the original 2 seasons, are excessively dark, the plot holes are laughable, the acting isn't as good, all the new and old characters are now obnoxious, and they focus too much about teenage romance and less on the nostalgia. Netflix realized somewhere down the road apparently that mostly teenagers watch the series, and they threw a lot of stuff in the series that would appeal to teenagers. This made the show worse, now it's too much like the Outer Banks.
Inception (2010)
There are no words for how good this film is
This film is unlike anything I have ever seen before, this film awakened the cinephile part of my brain, and I probably would still be watching Avengers for the thousandth time if it wasn't for this movie. Where to begin? The deeply human story, incredible visual effects, astounding direction, great acting, great action, great script, and great set pieces. This is Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, and I highly recommend you watch it. This film also explores intelligent themes such as the nature of reality. The fact that Nolan was able to make something this wholly original is just something else. The fact that this didn't win best picture is a testament to how idiotic the people in the Academy are.
