Mother of the Bride (2024)
Horrible clichèd vapid rubbish
There is not an original thought in this entire movie, like someone watched every rom com from the 90's, removed all the stereotypes and cliches and cut them together along with some badly named 'designers' (Take a first name, say it, then add a 'la' and repeat the first name)
The bride was revolting, all she cares about is her Instagram, she's everything that is wrong with social media. Her wedding is a corporate event, she's rude, selfish, and all she cares about is likes. She was my brat, I'd fly out and let her live out he overly produced free wedding.
There isn't a likeable character in the entire film but I don't know how much of that is to do with the appalling acting or the atrocious storyline.
Long story short...horrible film...just don't!
Baby Reindeer (2024)
Don't review if you haven't seen to the end!
I've seen several reviews saying they left this at Episode 3/4 and the main protagonist is a narcissistic etc...and deserved to be stalked.
I don't think this is about Martha as a stalker or Donny as a victim...this is about what you are willing to allow in and tolerate when you're dealing with unresolved trauma, and how that self-destruction can make you face your demons.
Amazing performances by everyone involved, it's painful
and difficult to watch, there are no winners but that's the point. This show is real, all our hidden secrets and bad choices biting us in the backside until we're willing to face them.
Great television!
The Pope's Exorcist (2023)
Decent Movie!
This is a good movie, good performances, sets, atmosphere but you can't escape that it's quite clearly The Exorcist with a gender change.
Some of the dialogue is the same, the words under the skin, the two priests, the sexuality...obviously the genre only has so many things to work with and it's not too say this is a bad film because of that but at times I felt like I'd seen it before.
The rest of the family being 'attacked' is a different spin, the professional telling the younger priest not to listen to speak with the demon was written by William Blatty.
All that said I enjoyed it, but the original will always be one of my favourite films ever.
Still Up (2023)
Not Funny!
This seems very 'slapstick, I think it's meant to be quirky but there needs to be some believability and no one escapes a party by pretending to go to Disneyland for a month, it's really stupid and not in a funny way.
Then you have the female protagonist who managed to charge her own card £200 in an open chemist with no staff for several hours just so the 2 leads could FaceTime.
I don't know what it's trying to be...these things that are happening wouldn't happen, so it's not real but neither are the made up bits funny!
Maybe it gets better but I'm so put off by Ep.1 I can't see me watching the rest.
Scream VI (2023)
Make it stop...
Scream 1-4 were good movies, 5 I could just about tolerate, this goes to show that sometimes you need to know when to stop.
You know as soon as scripts from the first movie get recycled it's time to stop...the re-hash of Jamie Kennedy's horror genre monologue brought up to date with franchises was possibly the worst part of this attempt at a new take...it was obnoxious and not in any way as clever as the original.
The whole thing was more of the same and it's old now, and has gone past nostalgia...and it's boring watching someone get shot and smashed in the head with an iron griddle and just getting up...
Boring and seen it all before...
Choose or Die (2022)
Meh!
Disappointed! It really wanted to look retro but didn't!
Wanted to be scary but wasn't. There were a few good moments, mainly at the beginning then it just seemed to be a lot of noise and dodgy acting.
It was a good premise, but it was trying too hard and should have stuck to either retro or modern, the mix didn't work.
The 'Boss' ending rather than being horror would have worked better as comedy and had potential to be funny but again the film took itself too seriously and was trying to be cerebral and clever and it didn't need to be.
Simplified this could have worked but I just found myself rolling my eyes!
Matilda: The Musical (2022)
I didn't see any flow
I saw Matilda The Musical in the theatre and it was really good, I enjoyed it. Also a big fan of the 90's film version so really looked forward to this.
Sadly I just don't think it worked on the 'big screen' the story was broken up and where sequences in the theatre were cleverly done it just became a confusing cutaway that detracted from rather than added to the story.
Even dance sequences that in theatre are expected and become a part of the story came across as a drama school assembly.
I think perhaps if I hadn't seen this in theatre this film may have worked and I'd have enjoyed it, as it was I was expecting to be transported back to a London stage and I was disappointed that I wasn't.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Look Amazing, but I wouldn't look at a sculpture for 3 1/2 hours
As I said, looks great...but otherwise a mish mash of elements of the first movie ("hysterical" inability to connect to an animal, an overly patriotic American marine who's annoying beyond belief) These added something to the original, this just seems to be a re-hash of the script because Cameron learnt CGI was good with water in 2022.
It's a shame, because it had potential, but the annoying marine was killed...bringing him back as a Navi was just lazy, he's not the only person from the only country that wants to find a new planet and conquer it, he's a terrible 'baddie' as are the kids from the water tribe, yeah OK social commentary about tolerance and all, but it was all so obvious.
It's also far, far, far too long!
