Ripley (2024)
Best new show that no one talks bout!
Brooding understated acting by the leads fools some reviewers into calling this boring but the tension built in the sedate pacing is intense! Italian characters are also exquisitely played and a bit less understated than the American characters. Shot with almost all shots fixed camera composed like entries in a photo book of one of those famous European photographers like Dieuzade but with people wandering around in each page / shot. One of those you want to watch again because it's genuinely differently done than anything you've seen before (and in this case to feast again o the stunning, photography-like cinematography).
Baby Reindeer (2024)
truly amazing show!
Sad & sometimes darkly funny journey through Gadd's most devastatingly dark years. How two disturbing experiences "f**cked him up" and how he kinda pieced himself back together. Amazing performances from everyone esp. Jessica Gunning! For those who thought Donny was a dick, Baby Reindeer is autobiographical and it was therefore deliberate. Gadd takes full responsibility for his role in all events. His insight and growing understanding of why it all happened was the most interesting part of the journey. He has never said what actually happened to his stalker so we don't know if she did in fact get prison time but the stats are mind-blowing: 41,000 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters...
3 Body Problem (2024)
One of the best sci-fi shows ever!
I understand if you don't like the variation from the source material, but I judge shows purely on how they exist as a show. As a TV show, 3 Body Problem is pretty good. I don't know that it will rise to the heights of Game Of Thrones, but Dan, Dave and Alexander managed to take complicated source material and adapt it into a pretty accessible show that's meant to appeal to everyone. Do they piss off alot of hardcore fanboys in process? Yes. But that may be a risk worth taking. Terrific stuff. Just digestible enough, intriguing plot lines, compelling characters and brilliant acting performances. Hope people give this one a shot - I binged it in a single night.
The Gentlemen (2024)
Wow, what did I just watch!!
The story ranks alongside Guy Ritchie's best and most entertaining work. It's great to see the Ritchie story-telling style spread across an 8-episode season, and it works well in this longer format. There's more time to really get to know the main characters, and there's more room to develop a broader range of gangland characters. A thoroughly bingeable Ritche romp. The series is unhinged in the best way. Cast is brilliant. Even without romance the chemistry between Theo James and Kaya Scodelario is off the charts. The final episode wraps up nicely but I still think there's room for more.
10/10.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
I really don't why all the hate, for me it succeed OPLA
Excellent casting! I liked the adaptation and thought they did a great job with the pacing for live action budgets and audience attention. The costumes, props and sets look incredible. The acting wasn't great in places but this is the first season and the actors are still finding their characters and experience. The 1 star reviews are petty and these people will never be happy until there is a shot for shot adaptation with actors that look and sound exactly like the original series. If a second season is something you want to see... stop being so negative and nit picking small changes. The creators have done an excellent job with this!
One Day (2024)
If You Love Romantic Drama , Then This Is For U
I watched this in a weekend and found it to be a gripping, irresistible and emotional series . This is one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema I have watched in a long time . I have read the book and watched the movie , but this is on another level in my opinion . Leo and Ambika have the most beautiful chemistry and their performances were incredible (give them all the awards!!!) . I love Dexter and Emma more now than I ever did, which also makes it all the more heartbreaking. This is something that is going to stay with me for a while...if you do watch make sure you bring A LOT of tissues.
Boy Swallows Universe (2024)
Top class acting!
Some great Aussie humour, good acting, familiar local areas around Brisbane, magpies singing, such a tough journey for kids born into poverty and hopeless parents - druggies and drug dealers. The grit and determination of the 2 brothers helped them survive, several stories of the adults in their lives letting them down, facing their demons and rising above them sometimes, some rough diamonds giving the boys support when needed etc. The boys surviving and rising out of poverty and crime. Brilliant. Creative. Unforgettable. With outstanding performances all around. Is a unique tv series that keep you on the edge of your emotions. Bravo!!
The Brothers Sun (2024)
Definitely Worth the watch !
I always hold my breath when a new Asian TV Show/Movie gets introduced because I'm worried it wont live up to my expectations, but this show didn't let down and it did live up to it! Obviously the choreography is amazing -- no holding back there, but the writing is well done too! And it's in a way where it catches you off guard sometimes. I also really appreciated all the details integrated into the final cut that was respectable fan-service for the Asian English & Mandarin speaking base. One that didn't go unnoticed was the 99 Ranch Market bags on the kitchen counter -- A Taiwanese grocery store staple. Love it all.
Yu yu hakusho (2023)
Truly amazing.
Bona-fide experience and the almost perfect switch to live action only simply due to the fact that it was only 5 episodes. This show 100% deserves to be gifted with many more seasons. The series has a good balance between action, comedy, and drama, and is able to keep the viewer's interest throughout the episodes. In addition, the soundtrack is excellent and helps to create an exciting atmosphere. In summary, Yu Yu Hakushô is an exciting and well-produced anime series that is worth watching for anyone who loves action and adventure. Definitely one of the most underrated shows this year , and one of the most underrated adaptation.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Beautiful world building
For what is was it was really good. You can see where the context of scenes are left out because it is the PG-13 version. Extremely anticipating R-rated 3 hour movie! I can tell already from this viewing it's going to be INSANE! I got what i needed out of it, but didn't get what i wanted.. Admiral Noble is BRUTAL and Kai was fantastic! Those two were my favs! Kora and Jimmy where solid.. I really wanted more from Nemesis but i should get that from R-rated version. ALL & ALL solid movie don't believe these haters. Family had a really fun time watching.
Definitely doesn't deserve the low rating.
Pluto (2023)
Most underrated anime this year
"Pluto" stands out as an anime that offers an intriguing plot and deep character development. It delves into complex relationships between humanity, artificial intelligence, and robots, presenting a science fiction story. The psychological depth of the characters and their compelling backgrounds, in particular, help to further engage the viewer in the story.
The visual aspect of the anime is also noteworthy, with detailed artwork, atmospheric scenes, and well-choreographed action sequences. Furthermore, the anime should be commended for its emotional depth and its willingness to address societal issues.
However, "Pluto" may have a complex storytelling structure that some viewers might find challenging, and certain themes within the story can be quite heavy. Additionally, some parts of the narrative may progress slowly.
Nevertheless, this anime holds great potential for those seeking science fiction and psychological depth, and it is highly recommended for fans of Naoki Urasawa's Work.
For me 10/10.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023)
Spectacular work Netflix
I'm an avid Scott Pilgrim fan, I have all the graphic novels. Have the film on Blu-Ray and gotten all the endings in the Scott Pilgrim game. And I can safely say with confidence that this is my favourite piece of Scott Pilgrim media. There is a plot twist early on that may turn off some purists, but I would argue that it worked in the greater benefit to the rest of the characters in the series, as the show really took the opportunity to get to know the rest of the characters. We got to see them grow far beyond what their relationship with Scott is. I especially love what they did with Young Neil and Lucas Lee. Though let's be honest here: Wallace Wells is still the MVP. Doesn't matter the media, he always takes the show.
Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
It's Just WOW
I was planning to watch one episode but I threw that reasoning away after seeing the first and continued to the last episode. I'm not quite a fan of 3d animation for anime aside from arcane but from the visual, animation, the combat and the historical details theyve put was just incredible. They werent shy about the adult themes either, when you're on samurai on a revenge. I'm gobsmacked there weren't a lot of marketing becauss this truly a gem. It reminded me of kill Bill, blade of samurai, vagabond and ghost of tsuhima. I hope they renew for a new season cause I'd like to see Mizu continue path of revenge.
All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
One of best this year!
I don't get why people don't like this series. It's so cute and yes there were changes from the book, but it's just as good!! Probably better. I love the fact that the main character, Werner, is completely intrigued by this girl. The only flaw is the fact that the book was smushed into four episodes, more than four episodes. But it's only four. I really do hope they get make more! Throughout the show, the main character, Werner seems to have the thousand-yard-stare. (You can look it up.) But in the end he seems to be genuinely happy that he found her and they have hope for being together in the future. This reminds me of a Romeo and Juliet story, they come from two different sides during the war between the two, and they end up almost falling for eachother.
Bodies (2023)
One of the best in this year
Amazing serie. One of my best so far. Definitely one of the best serie in Netflix. In every episode I was just waiting to watch what happens next.
You lose your mind while you get to the next one episode. It's so chaotic and this is what makes it special. I'm glad that there is no other season like "1988" because I would be afraid that they are gonna cancel it too since the audience of this kind of series is not that big. I would definitely recommend it, just be aware it's not a relaxing serie, you need to be there every minute. The cast amazing and of course
Graham on his best as always. 10/10.
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Incredible show
The Fall Of The Usher House is phenomenal. This show has a wonderful blend of mystery, intrigue, horror, and sadness. Instead of trying to point out the good points of the show, it would be much more challenging trying to find any elements that were truly "bad". The actors deliver their lines naturally, the scenes roll along smoothly and sensibly, the story is touching and dark, and the show is compelling to keep watching throughout. Not only is the fall of the usher House a good show, it's a phenomenal mixture of skilled storytelling, drama, horror, and suspense. Highly recommend.
One of Flanagan's best.
One Piece (2023)
Masterpiece!!
I have been a fan of One Piece for ages so I was really worried if the LA would be bad. However, it was beyond my expectation. They conveyed the story properly despite changing many details, the pirate aesthetic was demonstrated very well and of course I have to mention the cast. The cast was perfect!! It feels sooo good to see the characters you love as real people , The series strikes the perfect balance between respect for the source material and representing it the live action format! Equal parts comedy, action and adventure! Overally, this is the best LA I've seen in recent years, hope they will make ss2.
Sanyanggaedeul (2023)
One of the best 2023 shows!
Woow, It is an excellent series, full of very well-developed characters and with absolutely great action scenes. The protagonists and the main villain are the best of the series and in addition, all the secondary ones are perfect, even those who only appear for a short time. One of the best action series so far this year , loved evey minute of it!
Was raw, good acting, good story and no stupid romance at all!
Incredible drama, 10/10 for sure, exciting, fun... the friendship is beautiful..
you keep waiting for a tragedy to happen in each episode, which ends up happening in episode 6, but despite that, it gets even more interesting.
Joined my favorite series.
The worst is I hesitated few days watching it, thank god i pressed play.
Sankuchuari -seiiki- (2023)
Incredible in overall !
Showing both the negative and positive sides of the sport, newcomers may begin to understand the deep meaning and history of Sumo and its impact on Japenese culture, both past and present. Not only does the series showcase the various athletes' journeys to glory within the ranks of this ancient art, it also dives into the hidden backroom of Sumo's scandalous past of hazing and match fixing, without dishonoring the true spirit of Sumo. While the talented, yet troubled main character of Oze/Enno has a somewhat timoultous but noble story arc, it is subtely paralleled by more tragic stories of both the scarred (both physically and emotionally), yet physically overpowering Shizuuchi, and the insecure top ranked Ozeki superstar, Ryuki. While some of the acting may be a bit over the top for audiences not familiar with Japenese culture and/or cinema, that can be overlooked once viewers are captured by this classic underdog story. Highly recommend watching.
The Diplomat (2023)
One of finest Netflix original
My curiosity struck me like 3 episodes in. This dialogue, pacing and wit feels awfully familiar. I took a guess and thought maybe Aaron Sorkin had something to do with this. So I do an IMDB search and discover Debora Cahn is the writer...one of the writers of The West Wing and Homeland. Havent finished watch but so far im and thoroughly captivated and Keri Russell is an amazing choice. Nothing but great expectations for this.
I have to say that I was shocked when I saw the rating on IMDB , Just 8.2?! And also there's a lot of people didn't liked the show, I get it if you don't, thats your opinion, but please don't ruin it on us , we need more people to watch it so we can get S02.
Beef (2023)
Holly Molly!!
What a fun and full of enjoyment and full of emotions. Great unique series.
I love how beneath every character there is a vulnerability, and you see that when they are alone or when they are with strangers. The main characters are narcissistic, and are driven by scarcity and insecurity.
And I really like that heroes who didn't know each other, and then hated each other, go a long way together, in the end they realize that they are kindred spirits. The idea of the series is amazing, as is its implementation. We are shown the experience of all the characters. Literally almost all the minor characters are revealed to us. I think this series is really amazing in its attitude to the characters, their problems and shortcomings. In most new series, the writers spit on the disclosure of the characters, but in this they are spelled out to the smallest detail. There are themes of generational trauma. Love Ali Wong, she's an amazing comedian and actress, the rest of the cast was brilliant.
Wednesday (2022)
Wow , well done Netflix and Tim Burton's!
I loved this series. Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams was truly a match made in heaven. Pairing her alongside the character of Enid was a fantastic choice by the directors considering how their scenes together really stole the show. We got to dive into the backstory of the Addams family a little bit which I LOVED. Morticia and Gomez were amazing and I loved their characterization. Don't even get me started on Pugsley. He was such a sweet boy and an excellent (and refreshing) take on the character. Enid Sinclair surprised me with how much I grew to love her. Jenna and Emma's characters were an absolute blast to watch on screen. I wasn't too interested in the love triangle. It was strenuous and bland and left me feeling bad for Wednesday. However, I can definitely seen potential in Wednesday and Enid becoming something more. Their chemistry had me laughing and crying (especially at the end). Overall, this was an amazing show. It exceeded all of my expectations. My only hope is that for future seasons (please Netflix give me more) for the CGI to be more fleshed out. However, the CGI never once took away from the story or characters. NETFLIX GIVE US A SEASON 2!!!!!!
