The Islands (2019)
....A flurry of emotions to move you in every direction (at least once)
......I saw 'the islands' too at a special screening and I sobbed like a baby..........The acting is amazing, and the ending was brilliant. For me, all my guesses were incorrect. Everything that happens in this movie in unpredicted. The last half hour itself was highly unpredictable, and it had a powerful, powerful message. When a scene was meant to be dramatic, they did a great job at it. I don't know about everybody else, but the twist near the end left me sobbing like nothing I've ever felt.......it was the entire mystery of life revealed to my soul. You must watch this film. In fact, forget climbing Mt. Everest, just watch this film. You will feel that same high. The message the movie sent kept me thinking for a while. The amount of courage and bravery was inconceivable, there was barely any faults or anything wrong with the movie. For an independent film with no Hollywood involvement, they did an incredible, stunning job.
................I absolutely guarantee this movie to anybody who enjoys historical and action, but much more importantly faith and God. One of the best, or maybe even the best movie of the 20th century.
Cassandra's Dream (2007)
I just saw this tonight at the Toronto Film Festival's VIP Screening
This is a much better movie than 'Matchpoint' which had the most ludicrous ending in motion picture history.
'Cassandra' runs like a Shakespearean morality tale, but in the end it kind of fizzles out.
I think Mr. Allen should take more time to edit and craft his movies. Currently he makes 1 movie a year which is way too fast for any filmmaker who wants to make memorable films that will last 10 years from now.
You can't make a serious drama like a comedy. Dramatic movies have to be pieced together right. Here the scenes are choppy. Characters pop in and out, scenes shift too abruptly (like reel changes in the projector), and no wrap up in the end.
To me, the ending of any movie should either leave you in tears, leave you laughing, leave you stunned, etc. This film makes you leave wondering 'what happened'? Did they forget the last reel?
The good points are the acting is very good - Colin is fantastic. The dissection of a 'real murder' is unbelievably strong (much better than 'Dial M for Murder' and others). And the morality of taking another human life is much better examined than 'Matchpoint' that left you feeling like it's OK to blast someone's head off as long as you don't get caught.
So in the end, it may be a film worth watching, but there are hundreds of better films at your local video store that are much more worth your time, including 'Hollywood Ending' that left me in stitches. I know the critics did not like this film, but who cares about them?
The thing about movie critics is they've never made a movie, so could someone please let them know that?
Woody should continue making comic films starring himself. He doesn't need to enter into the 'dark noir' films to impress anyone. He should do what he does best and not worry about these 'movie critics' who are here today, gone tomorrow. Can anyone tell me a single review of any movie critic they can remember? I can't.
The bottom line is the film gets a generous 7.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
I think someone should take the camera away from Imagine Entertainment
This is from the same production company that brought us 'Ransom' among other really bad movies.
For some reason, people in the industry think the Imagine gang are great filmmakers.
Said who?
The rest of the world may be brainwashed by the movie studio machines, but I'm not.
This was a horrible film. Slow. Stupid. Boring. Like all of the films they do. Slow. Stupid. And boring.
There's no excuse imaginable for spending over $100 million and having it turn out this bad. They should have spent $99 million on getting a great writer and $1 million on the production. I guarantee it would have been a far better movie.
