Lisa Mania (2021)
Low budget fun
This movie kind of took me by surprise. It starts off a pretty standard low-budget romcom where a guy suspects his wife is cheating, so he teams up with his buddy to dig into it. But then it takes some really unexpected turns. I dont want to spoil anything, but let's just say there are some fantastical elements that pop up and are surprisingly well done, considering the clear budget constraints.
Honestly, it starts a bit slow, and it might have earned another star from me if the first 15 minutes were faster paced but as the movie goes on, the characters start to grow on you in their own quirky way.
The humor might not be everyone's thing but there's something endearing about it. It's not the kind of laugh-out-loud comedy that keeps you in stitches the whole time (a couple of scenes did crack me up though), and if that's what you're after, this might not quite meet your expectations. But if you're open for something a little different, with an unconventional charm and quirky characters, you might like this a lot more than you expect.
The Marvels (2023)
A Marvel movie written by kids
You know, Marvel's been kinda hit-or-miss since "Endgame". Some of their movies are really cool, and others feel like they're just made for kids with a huge budget. The first "Captain Marvel" was alright, not the best, but at least it was entertaining and kept a steady vibe. But this new one? It's kinda all over the place. It felt like they were trying way too hard to make us laugh, and every joke just felt forced.
The main characters seemed like they were just thrown together without much thought, and all their bonding moments? Totally didn't feel genuine. At first, it was kind of funny that Ms. Marvel idolizes Captain Marvel. A little bit of hero worship is okay, but they just kept pushing it until it wasn't fun anymore. It would've been different if these moments felt real, but they were more like, "Okay, insert joke here."
And then there's Prince Yan's planet. Seriously, a whole world where everyone communicates by singing? Maybe there's some universe where that works in a Marvel movie and is hilarious, but it definitely isn'tthis one.
The part that really got me, though, was the whole thing about Captain Marvel being able to restart a sun. She had this power the entire time and just...didn't think of it? Then, at the end, she's like, "Oh, now I believe I can do it," and just goes for it. The entire plot just seems like something a kid would write.
American Fiction (2023)
one of the best films of 2023
Finally watched this after everyone's been buzzing about it, and wow! It absolutely lived up to the hype. I was in stitches one minute and in tears the next. The entire cast was phenomenal, but Jeffrey Wright is truly outstanding and deserving of every award coming his way.
And I can't praise the directing enough. With this type of subject matter there is a real danger in coming of as condescending to the audience and preachy but I never felt that and it instead presents social issues in genuinely funny ways. Major regrets for not catching it in theaters! Would have loved to experience certain scenes that had me cry laughing with a whole theater of people.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Dramatic drop in quality
This really upsets me because I love Harry Potter but the Fantastic Beats series really went downhill. It's a DRAMATIC drop in quality from the first one.
