The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Epic landscapes, dialogues and characters not so much
Three episodes in and I have to say, I'm not impressed.
The story is simply boring. Hardly anything worth mentioning has happened in 3 hours so far.
Most of the characters are either: boring, annoying and very dislikeable (or a combination of those 3 things).
Galadriel is the worst character; in Episode 1 she is overpowered and then becomes an annoying character that know it all and demands to speaks to who every is in charge at the moment, but does not have an ounce of diplomatic in her and verbally attacks the person.
The Harfoots are dirty nomadic people and are very dislikeable. In Episode 3 they even make jokes about the people they have left behind to die, just because they could not keep up during their migrations.
There's nothing mystical about elves, they're just normal humans with pointy ears who talk nonsensical phrases that don't make any sense.
Orgs catch fire when exposed to sunlight (middle earth has vampires now!?) when the plots needs them to and then forgets about its couple of minutes later.
The only ones that are reasonably well done are the dwarves in Episode 2. I liked the Kingdom and the interaction between Prince Durin and Princess Disa. It felt nature as a couple having a guest for dinner.
Otherwise, the series consists only of long landscape shots, but these are (for the most part) beautifully done.
The dialogues for the most part are unbearable nonsense in the original English version, not so much in the German version, but still not great. (Watched every episode twice)
Most of the time the dialog just explains what happened on screen or just keep repeating line for no reason. People do not respond to what was said prior to them. Stuff like that.
I really wanted the show to be good, an epic journey thru middle earth with the rise and fall of Numenor, forging of the rings all that stuff that would make a great fantasy series for the ages.
But after three episodes we have lots of characters, 5 or 6 different plot lines and getting constantly new characters, which makes it hard just to remember the names of those involved in all these plot lines.
Visually pleasing, beside that, very disappointing.
