Fawlty Towers (1975)
At the time a classic....now somewhat dated!
Mid '70's this was exceptional comedy, as was Chaplin in the '20's....but it dates and other forms of comedy supersede it.
It is still funny, but there are so many better comedies available now that you have to be somewhat desperate to watch it again.
Father Ted (1995)
Silly simplistic humor!
It is an easy to understand form of comedy, somewhat akin to Fawlty Towers and the ilk!
Nothing in this show is going to task your brain, it is in-your-face type humor that will either bore you or make you laugh.
All the characters have their traits, and they play them out in each episode, it becomes very predictable, but still somewhat enjoyable.
Detectorists (2014)
Worthwhile watch!
It isn't the funniest, most clever, most intelligent, or greatest comedy the BBC have ever come up with.....but, it is entertaining and worth your time.
In places it is touching, it is funny several times per episode. It is a little quirky, a little different, somewhat original. It won't offend anyone.....totally safe humor.
Great comedies have to take risks, this one plays it safe. However, I watched all the episodes and considered it time well spent and enjoyed.....which is more than I can say for 90% of the nonsense now produced!
King of Thieves (2018)
Very little honor amongst thieves!
Unfortunately a superb cast got involved with a script about deception and personal infighting.
I suspect that the story is all to realistic, but that doesn't necessarily make for good entertainment. Good stories usually revolve around protagonists and antagonists, this move is full of antagonists!
We are left hoping they all get caught....and a good heist movie usually revolves around you hoping they get away with it!
Coupling (2000)
The smartest comedy writing of all time!
This comedy is adult/late teenage humor. This show is not vulgar, but not for kids. Profanity occurs once in the entire series, a lot of innuendo occurs in every episode.
Numerous episodes in the series are the best comedy sketches ever written because it exposes the true life events that we are all aware of, and are in someway embarrassed about.
Many episodes use the technique of misunderstandings between people to create hilarious situations, you can see them coming, which makes it all the more funnier.
It you don't find the original British version of Coupling funny, intelligent, clever, and brilliantly portrayed you should give up on watching comedies.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Don't Look At All!
This is a disaster comedy movie that would be better described as a disastrous movie. I laughed twice in 2 1/2 hours, and not in places that were intended to be funny.
It is neither one thing or another, it takes gentle pokes at everybody without ever delivering to anybody. This is a total waste of a good cast. The only part of the movie I found satisfying was then end, somewhat in part because I could go and do something else.
