Battle: Los Angeles (2011)
Every cliché gets attacked by aliens.
From the title to the script, every cliché is delivered in spades, typical war movie stereotypes are thrown into the deep end as aliens land and attack various points of the world.
First the negatives: 1. Acting, some people should just stay away from acting, that being said I guess you can only do so much with a script like this. 2. The script. Not much effort in this. 3. Hand-held camera view, a bit of a hit and miss on this film. It does work on some scenes but I felt it could have been utilized better. 4. One liners. Terrible delivery. Fake 'Goddamit!' after a speech kind of kills the whole speech. 5. Characters - what would have made this movie far better is have characters that were not stereotypes. You have the soldier out for revenge, the soldier who is scared but pulls through, the female who is tough... would have been refreshing to see like a promise broken or things just didn't turn out good.
The positives: 1. The FX - Pretty good job! reminded me of D9 and another film I cannot quite put my finger on.... maybe Skylight? 2. The music. Added to the film and added intensity. 3. Pace. A good paced action/sci fi flick.
I gave it a 6 as I didn't expect much to be honest but did enjoy the action side of things. The film delivers on explosions and gunfire, just don't expect anything deep and meaningful or you will be disappointed.
The Chaperone (2011)
WWE makes some terrible movies.... this just adds to the pile
OK, before seeing any WWE movie, I don't really expect great acting, that is the way I just auto-think when I hear they made another movie. That being said, I tried to watch this with an open mind, didn't expect much at all but was interested to see if Triple H could fair better than his fellow wrestlers. Unfortunately although I found HHH a step above Cena, it wasn't enough to say the movie was good, but wasn't the worse. The support cast were OK doing the typical movie role of a family divided by a fathers (HHH) past, the same formula seen in many 80's and 90's family flicks, the first half hour was very painful to watch, bad beard and lines, but I have to admit it did pick up further along the movie.
I gave the rating a 2 out of 10 simply because the movie seems like a popcorn fodder affair, it's a movie not made to make us think, maybe a laugh here and there with a bit of action, bit of a throw back to the 80s.
I reckon these big wrestler types would suit better to horrors and thrillers if they are to keep sticking to 80s style movies.
