Maxton Hall - Die Welt zwischen uns (2024)
Story not original but acting is spectacular
This is a YA drama like any other, with the well-worn tropes we love, set in an iconic British boarding school. The characters are stereotypical and stay obediently within the bounds of their fictional roles. What made this series watchable are the spectacular performances from nearly all the actors and the high quality of the cinematography. I also enjoyed watching this in the original German audio to get the full effect of the actors' performances. The dubbing never quite does it for me. And arguments in German sound so much more intense than in the polite British accent.
I am so looking forward to a season 2, but hoping the writers can improve the book, as Mona Kasten's ending is unsatisfactory for me. I would like the writers to be a little bolder in adapting it for screen, being faithful to the nature of the relationship between James and Ruby.
The Idea of You (2024)
Awkward
Slow and just awkward. I'll be honest- I watched the first half hour, and then skipped right to the end. No chemistry between the actors. A hot mother falling in love with someone a little older than her daughter? So cringe. It feels like an overrated Hallmark movie. Just missing those pumpkin spice lattes. Maybe it really was a discarded Hallmark script. There isn't any artistry in the cinematography, music, acting...
I enjoyed the series Maxton Hall so much more. The chemistry is dynamite and characters compelling. A little philosophy thrown in to entertain those of us with a brain. Binged it in one night.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Stopped watching after episode 3...
It's so terrible. The characters are annoying and the dialogues are trite. The subplots weave in and out of illogicity. "Let me go down and explore the dangerous tunnel all by myself", says the elf. "Let's spend our last night at home sleeping next to this orc hole", say the humans. And what's up with the children who hide their relationships with naked adult strangers from their parents? I though we'd already learned that that's not a good thing...
However, if you're looking for a lavish LOTR background to occupy your TV screen, put this on and mute the sound. The producers may have neglected to hire good writers but they sure got the digital effects team right.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
This got very dark very fast
This movie really surprised me. Constant imagery of occult and satanism. Gruesome deaths like impaling and slicing. More a horror movie and not what I expected for a Marvel film. Very disappointed.
Miss Scarlet & the Duke (2020)
Not exciting but not boring either
Rife with political correctness, making plot lines easy to guess, but still a good romp through the Victorian London crime genre. Enjoyed the flashbacks dynamic with Eliza's father. Lovely costumes throughout. The episode "Deeds, not words" was my favorite.
Der Club der singenden Metzger (2019)
Fascinating but shallow...
I love a good immigration drama, but all during this one I felt like an outsider looking in, trying to get a grip on the underdeveloped characters. I think too much was crammed into four short episodes.
I must give credit to the actress who played Eva...her riveting scenes brought me joy and tears!
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Visually beautiful, but boring
Visually stunning. Like an LOTR spinoff. But the storyline is boring. Characters flat and predictable. Started fast forwarding in second episode. Didn't get past 5th. There are better things to watch.
