Whacked (1998)
I was scared
This is a non-dialogue film. The story is that one man who is working at a golf range gets stressed and starts to play golf as well. Although this is a non-dialogue film, I think we can easily understand the story. Through watching this, I at first thought this film was a horror film. There a a lot of victims because of what he does, but he seems happy by doing it. However, we can see this as comedy too. I think this is up to which side we empathize with. For the victims, this is definitely a horror because they are suddenly attacked by something from the sky. However, from the man's perspective, this is a comedy because he could be released from stress by doing it. I am on the victim's side, and I could not understand his behavior at all. This is not a funny movie for me, but an interesting one.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Funny
This film is a story of a man who usually go to work via sea. He uses boat to get to the place. One day, a woman find him carrying oars and then his habit starts to be disturbed.
Although this is a film without voice, we can easily understand outline of this story through watching this. There are any complicated factors because this story is only focusing on his way to go to work. However, there are some scenes that allows us to think about this story deeply. For example, the man's face and behavior, a woman who is always fishing at the port's face do change day by day. From these expressions, we can imagine what the man thinking and what the woman feeling towards him. In addition, meaning of the title "Fish out of water" will be able to understand. I want you to focus on the last scene.
I think the story of this film is not really interesting, though, I could have fun with approaches to tall us the story.
A Moment (2012)
Reminds me of the experience
This film, "a moment" is a non-dialogue film. In this film, there are four main characters and each of them have different problems. They are suffered from those, and one day overcome them because they met "a moment". I think most of people who are living in Japan or familiar to this country for more than 10 years would recognize what title means when you see the clock and a behavior of people. Even though I was young boy at that time and I just watched what happened on TV, I still remember what happened clearly for 10 years. After that disaster happened, this country changed so much. Many people lost many things. However, while we are living, we have to overcome millions of difficulties, which includes the moment. From this film, I thought those characters could overcome their problems like people who experienced the moment tried to overcome it.
The Gift (2010)
Like it
This is a short film about a box. This film starts with the scene that a man is carrying a box that looks like a present. He reaches a house, and give it to another man. They see what is inside, and then suddenly the man who carries the box kills the owner of the house and runs away.
One of my favorite points of this film is the world view. There are unknown technologies such as robots and huge vehicles that we have never seen. There is no explanations about those in this film, though, I like that expression. Another point that I like is that "Unicorn" is not literally what we expect. In this film, the word "unicorn" must be used. Therefore, every audience will expect that a real unicorn appears. However, in this film, "unicorn" is something in the box. We do not know exactly what it is.
Through watching this film, we can imagine what is going on in this film. I really like the director's style.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Problems in a society
The film, "Three Days in Kamakura" is a drama about a couple. The wife is Japanese, and her husband is British and working in a language school. One day, he finds a boy sitting in the corner of the classroom. Because his mother does not respond to calls, the man starts to take care of him with his wife.
Through watching this film, I think I found some social problems are indicated. This is not contained in the main flow apparently, but we can just imagine through some scenes. For example, the couple's neighbor acts as a mean person and that shows social problems existing in Japan, such as neighborhood troubles. The main story itself also can be seen as indicating them. This movie is not only a drama, but also a meaningful film. I like the way this film shows what we have to think of.
The Lunch Date (1989)
What is happening there?
This is a film that depicts one old lady. She is in a station, and heading to the train she reserved. However, she collides with a black man and misses the train because of it. To wait for the next train, she goes into a restaurant and buys a salad. She forgets to pick up a fork, so she goes to get a fork. When she comes back to her seat, she sees a strange scene.
In my opinion, one of the factors expressed in this film was discrimination towards black people. In this film, black people seem to cause troubles many times, and there are fewer white people. I could not catch what the director wants to tell us, but I feel it's still a huge factor. Even though I could not grasp the full intention, the story is very simple and funny so that we can laugh. Therefore, I can recommend that you watch this. If you can, please explore my question.
New Boy (2007)
Moving
This is a drama about a boy. One day, a black boy come to the classroom as a transfer student. There are some classmates who help him but others who harass him. While taking math class, he remembers his experience in his home country.
The theme of this film is apparent, which is discrimination. We can see that from most of scenes, and even characters are saying swear words that insult him. For example, there is a scene that a boy says to his teacher that the black boy should sit next to a black girl. In this scene, we can see that they are categorizing those black students in one group by their skin.
In addition to this main theme, there are also implied themes, such as refugees, dictatorship and war. This is implied through scenes of his father, who is a teacher. I think this movie is showing important expressions without dialogue, just by showing them visually. This is a great film.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Made me laugh
This movie is a film of a woman. She seems wanting love from someone, and one day she takes subway. In the subway, she finds a man was making speech to find his partner. He sincerely offers women around him to give him love, and the woman starts to have interest on him.
Before watching this film, I didn't know that performances can be seen in subway in other countries. In my home country, people are very indifferent to others and we cannot see those. I prefer having this kind of culture. If you know this culture, I think you will find what is going on in this film and can laugh. Still some of you will understand what happens at the end, this is funny because characters' face and sheriffs are funny after knowing what happens next. Some of you might see this as making fun of the woman, though, I just like this film.
Knick Knack (1989)
Nice one
This is a non-dialogue movie produced by Pixar. The main character is a snowman in a snow globe. Although he wants to get closer to a doll which looks attractive to him, he cannot because of glass. He tries to break it, but all his attempts are unsuccessful. Then, the snow globe moves to the edge of the shelf. What happens to him next?
I think one of the best points of Pixar's films is that those stories are not complicated and most audiences can easily understand them. If those are without dialogue, they can. This movie, "KNICK KNACK" is following this pattern. We can easily understand what is going on, what characters want and what is funny. I think creating a simple story and telling them by just showing is much more difficult than we imagine. Therefore, I think the technology of Pixar is just wonderful and I like this one.
Lifted (2006)
I like this
This film is a non-dialogue film made by Pixar. This is a story about weird aliens and a man. One day, aliens come in front of a man's house by spaceship. One small alien tries to bring the man out of the house by manipulating switches, but it fails again and again.
I like this movie so much because the story is quite simple and funny. Through watching the film, we can easily understand what is going on. We can imagine the purpose of aliens, relationship between those two, what those two thinking, etc. Pixar's excellent technology enables me to imagine these. Their face and movements are quite natural and it makes the film understandable. In addition, their sense of comedy hits me very much. In short, I do like this movie and strongly recommend it to everyone who has never watched it.
