Red Victoria (2008)
Review from Texas Frightmare Weekend
I just got back from the "Texas Frightmare Weekend" in which this had a screening. Red Victoria is about a man named Tim. He is a screenplay writer who writes Dramas/Comedies. His manager informs him that his scripts aren't selling and he is going to have to do a Horror film which is all the fad right now. So Tim sets out to write one without really wanting to write it. He attempts to get help from a friend who is a movie buff but that doesn't help much. So... one night, whilst going into his bedroom he finds a corpse, or so it appears. A spirit named Victoria has been sent to help him write his Horror film. Red Victoria stars Anthony Brownrigg (also writing and directing) and Arianne Martin. Anthony writes a damn good film. The dialog never feels forced and is very funny. It may appear to be a casual Horror film, but you HAVE to see it. It is a great light comedy that is in the taste of films like "Hot Fuzz" which are great pokes at it but are in there own way like the genre there tackling. Red Victoria has many great performances, great dialog and everything you need in a perfect film.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
The Tale is in safe hands at last!
We all know the tale. When a barber loses his wife and daughter to a amoral judge and is sentenced for 15 years, returns and beings a new life only built for revenge, he is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. The cast is pretty alright for a musical. Most doubt Depp but he does come in strong. He sure acts beyond his limit and he CAN sing! Can he sing good? YES! Carter has proved herself in both departments so she is very well fit. Rickman has done the same and Cohen shows of his amazing singing talents. The script by Logan is very well done with most of SS's music still intact. Although there is a fair share of song cuts, the soundtrack is very solid. Burton does bring justice to this film. Not that it needed it but he adds the covering to it which turns Todd into a greatly acted and visually grand film. The blood is also done right, it is never over used and stops when it should. The cast work very well together and the stages and suits are very well done. The film never drags and gives you enough to make itself the best film of the year and one of the best films of all time!
Beowulf (2007)
A Strong Soild film that may be much better then most think...
Beowulf is a motion-cap adaptation of the epic poem and is here to show off it's glory. The cast is racked up with people like Ray Winestone, Robin Wright Penn, Anthony Hopkins yes; Angelina Jolie. The story is about Beowulf attempt to fight and defeat Grendel and then later he must take on Grendel's Mother who wants some hard-core revenge. When the film opens it seems to be a very average film via effects but when Beowulf arrives the film beings to look much better. A scene in which Beowulf fights giant sea creatures left my jaw on the floor. First of all the detail and lighting is perfect then I was surprised how much they could put into a PG-13 film. Zemeckis has shown improvement from 'The Polar Express' but still does not have the 'Forest Gump' thing going on but it's very close to it. The only thing that ruins Beowulf is that the story gets a little off-beat but Gaiman and Avary's script shines most of the time. All together Beowulf is much better then 300 and will epically be one of the best films of the year.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
What a twist!
POTC:3 is going to blow-up the box-office and make you fall asleep. Jack is back and he is only getting more annoying, many pirates you loved now you hate and vis-Varese. The movie is so long people fell asleep, mainly kids and oldies. Also to note, POTC:3 has so many twist turns and death in it you really just don't give a it who dies and makes the film somewhat more confusing with its unhighly detailed subplots and references to the past that we never saw. Acting in this film is getting old, Depp has a great character and after this film you just get tired of him. The ending is an ending. The beginning is a middle or a half made future from which the film never points out how long. Fights and special effects are done nicely and the film's score is'nt that bad but its nothing new. There is some nice comic-relief in the film that is'nt the smartest but will get you chuckling. POTC:3 is a film that gets tired fast, has a almost never ending plot twists, mediocre acting, some nice visuals that altogether make a film that is passable at the lowest level.
Grindhouse (2007)
A taste of perfection (Planet Terror) and a little too much of bitterness (Death Proof)
GrindHouse is a really cool looking film that keeps its' promises until Death Proof.
Planet Terror was a fast-paced film with tons of action. The acting was great, score was nice and the characters are very interesting. Death Proof was very slow-paced with little action and almost endless girl talk. Acting was very based on- and there was no humor or really anything to keep your interest.
Death Proof's story made no sense, there was like 3% Kurt Russel in the film. It was trying to build up to the car scenes right? Well it took forever, almost waisting half the film.
Planet Terror was perfect! the only problem was that I wished they switched the lengths of the two around, because I would of loved to see Plant Terror a lot longer. The trailers Macthee (loved it), WereWolf women of the SS (Funny, but a little lacking), Don't (great too) and thanksgiving was perfect.
Death Proof- 7/10 Planet Terror- 9/10 Faux Traliers- 10/10 ----------------------- Grind House- 9/10
Altogether GrindHouse is a very enjoyable film with Death Proof begin its only flaw.
Hannibal (2001)
Hannibal takes bite of perfect, but loses a bit of the brain.
Hannibal takes off right after Hannibal Lector has escaped from his cold celled life and is somewhere in Europe saying that "He is having a friend for dinner", the end of the SOTL. Hannibal has a beautiful score but some times the bups are lifted wrong and make some scenes a little odd. Hopkins is Hannibal and returns for another cannibalistic performance. The acting is somewhat dry and falls in parts. Also the story seems to mop around the old SOTL formula, and into a more horrific tone. But this is not a bad thing. It gets away from repeating the same style, but it does have some parts that felt very useless. All and All, Hannibal turns around and tries to be a very unique film but at parts just does not feel right and seems to make me miss the genius tone of the original. Hannibal slices a juicy taste but feels somewhat tart after wacthing it.
Happy Tree Friends (2000)
Blood, gore +_Cute critters = Stupidity
You really don't need to think about this to find out the plot: cute critters and blood equals one of the worst shorts of all time.I viewed this show a few days ago and all I can say saw is what the heck? Its all about some cute critters getting killed off in some violent way, and the worst part is that it is not even funny. There is a music video by the band "Fall out Boy" with a bit of this crap. The song already sucks and the video makes it even more terrible. In all this is indeed the worst cartoon I have seen to date.I cant believe this is a show. The bits are 2-3 minutes long and seem to knock off everything and keeps the fact this show is terrible. The soundtrack is OK.... but makes a episode of "Beavis and butt head" look like the entire "Lord of the rings" franchise. This show is awfully made and deserves a canceling right this minute.
GameSpot TV (1998)
X-play and the musical review!
Now before you start reading this I have to say that X-play is not a comedy series, but indeed reviews games. The show is basically Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb reviewing games,DUH! In the middle of reviews famous people and stuff appear up and have some of the most funny stuff or conversations with Adam and Morgan, The reviews tell in Depth of there thoughts of the games. The reason for the bits with characters like Bob & Steve, ratty, drunk link and stuff, is to keep the show full of humor and what-not! Indeed a "Most Excellent Show".
As for the musical, The songs are not jazzy or perfect, but the lyrics are good, The story felt rushed a bit,But it's 30 minutes of singing, story and countdown. It is also "Most Excellent Show".
In the name of Adam sessler, X-play gets a "5 out of 5"
Night at the Museum (2006)
If your a child or a parent taking your children to the movies, this is a pass
I went to the movies to see this, alone.I had seen a trailer,I thought "Heay its Ben stiller,Owen Wilson and Robin Williams.Could you ask for a better cast?".Well you could ask for a little bit of a better movie.Sure I laughed like 3 times. It may be that I'm a fan of more mature movies. But in the end Night at the Museum is more a family movie and I'm not mocking that. When Owen Wilson quotes "I wish I could quit you",I could not stop laughing, there is something positive. But when another joke came on,I felt like I was listening to my sister's My chemical romance CD.Every joke/song was the same tone, humor for the whole family to enjoy (Note: I do not recommend MCR for the family, just a saying). The acting, well its not Ben stiller at his best.Overall this movie is OK for average movie lovers, great for the family.A 7 out of 10
