John Ford Knew Westerns

The fact that this film is from 1924 should have told me it's a silent movie but I wasn't thinking. I'm not a fan of silent movies but my husband got a collection of FORD AT FOX for Christmas and he wanted to start at the beginning.

I can't believe how much I love the movie.

This was the beginning of John Ford's career, so much so that he is not credited on screen. Even though he isn't credited, it is so clearly a John Ford film. The action, drama and humor intertwine so clearly in his style. Fans of westerns will enjoy this film and I am looking forward to watching the progression of talent over time.

Ralph Feinnes as Prince Charming?

Okay, so I'm not a Jennifer Lopez fan. But my husband was trying to rent a few videos that I'd appreciate -- chick flicks, you know. I berated him, but ten minutes into the movie, I was smiling.

The movie has a warm feel to it. There's nothing overly exciting. It's an average film, but I found Ralph Feinnes surprisingly endearing.

Everyone knows the man can act -- he's amazing, but I was sure he was miscast in a romantic comedy. Instead, his performance was delicately understated. He was charming and certainly appealing.

The other true bright spot in the film was Bob Hoskins as a hotel's butler. His performance was so tight and dignified. I just wanted to hug him.

Not a great film, but a pleasant few hours. 7 out 0f 10.

What Children's Television Should be

Almost 50 years later, I remember seeing these stories as clear as day. Probably my favorite was Rapunzel, told with all the loving detail and care that was usually reserved for dramas.

These compare favorably to Shelley Duvall's fairy tales and had the wonderful advantage of showing a grown-up Shirley Temple.

I simply loved them.

The movie is visually and emotionally stunning.

Christian Bale is so perfect that it hurts to watch his growing isolation, his desperation to be connected.

Personally, I think it's Spielberg's masterpiece.
