A Walk to Remember (2002)
Sweet and Inspiring Despite Distraction
This film was inspiring and encourages the viewer to set vigorous goals and take a chance despite social pressure. This film isn't overly sappy and portrays the main characters as intelligent individuals with the power to change. Props to Shankman, West, and Moore. The only distraction: distasteful, sexual language in the opening scene, especially by the Eric character. I know screenwriters add such dialogue to connect with the viewer, but it actually alienates.
The Oprah Winfrey Show (1986)
An Original Show in an Era of Talk Show Trash
Let's look at our talk show options: Jerry Springer, Riki Lake, and Jenny Jones. In an age were lover's quarrels and paternity tests are dominating daytime talk, Oprah Winfrey takes the high road by promoting books, self-help, and education. Granted, quite a few of the Oprah books are graphic and involve abuse, and sometimes her therapist of-the-month gets a bit too preachy. But Oprah generally wants to help society by presenting all sides of controversial issues and letting us decide. It is clear Oprah values liberty and freedom, and has done several shows on human rights abuses in other countries. I applaud her efforts. This show gets an 8 out of 10.
Politically Incorrect (1993)
Host doesn't have conviction, talks only to shock
I have been a viewer of Politically Incorrect for about two years. Recently, I have decided to stop. I like people who state their TRUE beliefs, no matter how unacceptable or shocking. Maher is not one of those individuals, but says things only to shock and fluster, rather than share his true ideas about policy. I have heard him contradict himself, change his mind in a nano-second about series issues, and speak out of sheer ignorance without knowing the facts. I have heard enough.
