Alabama Jackson (2022)
Fast pace, sharp. Reminds me of Archer
Another impressive stop-animated action comedy from Adult Swim.
The premise: Harriet Tubman (Wanda Sykes) and sidekick Alabama Jackson (Donald Faison) use time travel to save black music and prevent the KKK from destroying Obama's political career.
The result: explosive, farcical action with a joke in everyt frame! The fast pace and comedy reminds me of Adam Reed's writing in Archer.
The story, driven by Harriet's sharp tongue and unrelenting focus, works beautifully with Alabama's scatterbrained (but well-intentioned) support. The stop-motion animation is gorgeous, funny, and clean. A really impressive little ditty. I hope they make more episodes in a longer format.
Running Free (1994)
Low budget, no talent kid's nature flick
I saw this once when I was in my early teens. My younger brother and I could not finish the movie. We made fun of our father for bringing it home in the first place. The only value "Running Free" provided us with was a reference to judge other bad movies against. "Running Free" or "One Paw" is, in our view, the worst film we'd been exposed to.
The movie has the look of a one-hour Sunday afternoon CBC made for TV movie. The most expensive scene must be when the bad guys attack One Paw and the kid with grenades from a helicopter. Why throw grenades at a wolverine from a helicopter? Why not shoot it or trap it? Poor.
Do not rent this film. Hopefully you are just reading this for idle curiosity and not because you are a fan of "Running Free".
Empire Records (1995)
Great film, in the explorative spirit of "Dazed and Confused"
Super green film. For lovers of Dazed and Confused, good tunes and laughter and other fun. Rory Cochrane takes the cake in his role of "Lucas". Excellant early work from Renee Zellweger and Liv Tyler. This movie gives us an early warning against the boy-band zeitgeist/plauge of the late 90's.
