The Unforgivable (2021)
Kept this ADHD engaged 'till the end 👍
Sandra Bullock can act! Damn. This isn't a movie I would go out and buy to watch over and over, but it was actually a fun ride. The characters are all well-cast and the acting and production is high-end. I didn't see the end coming.
A Ghost Story (2017)
Meh
Casey Affleck is adorable and I enjoy his screen presence...and he does a great job, here; his singing not withstanding. I just didn't enjoy this flick. I wanted to. I tried. I read all these reviews explaining it, after. Maybe, I just lack the pallet for art films. I don't know. It was just boring and came off as pretentious, with little depth, plot or point.
Still (2018)
It was more of a 1'st draft. If only. 😕
So, ever since Orange is the New Black, I've been enchanted by Madeline Brewer. She has a charm that kept me watching this flick, in direct spite of the movie, itself.
So, the story is a bit weak sauce. There needed to be more to the plot. It seemed more an homage to moonshine than anything. Add to that, the director started off the film with news clippings that gave everything away. After that, the director decided to tack on an extended backstory, at the end. I think it was supposed to be a "big reveal" mixed with tying-up loose ends, but it was the cinematic equivalent of serving the main course, after dessert.
The acting was great and it would appear the Appalachian Trail is beautiful??? If only we could have seen more of it. The dialogue could have been expanded to show why the male lead felt the way he did about trespassers. Also, the ending of one of the female characters seemed out-of-character.
I hope this movie is remade, someday, with more time spent fleshing-out more than just 1 of the 3 leads and in a way that is more M. Night Shamaylan and less 4-yr-old telling you about an event he witnessed in school, the other day.
Our Friend (2019)
The most beautiful movie I have seen in years.
This is not a story that neatly falls into a specific genre. Yes, it's a drama and based on a true story, but it's also its own thing.
It's real and the actors are each perfect for their roles as well as on point. The music score and filming quality are high-budget....but that isn't what makes this film poignant. I'm reminded of, "Terms of Endearment" and, "It's a Wonderful Life". Some might be warmed inside by the love of this man for his wife. Some might see a testament of a remarkable woman who lived an authentic life; beloved for her inner light and radiant joy for life and for her children. I saw the transformation of a man who discovered the meaning of all of this--the meaning of existence.
This movie will be Christmas gifts, for the people I love.
Neptune (2015)
Weak sauce.
This was a pointless "art" film that never went anywhere. Spoiler alert (here's the entire story): a pretty, 14-yr-old orphan girl, in a small Maine town, is the last person a fellow student looks at, before committing suicide. She is haunted by what happened and feels bad for his family. She helps the family, but the local priest, who has raised her, is pissed and wants her to be his successor, in the church. She doesn't and actually enjoyed crabbing, with the dead boy's dad. She gives up on the town and leaves on a boat hauling sheep. The end. There, I just saved you the 2 hours I waited, hoping for some semblence of a plot to develop. 🐑🐑🐑
