The Photograph (I) (2020)

Vibe of Love Jones
22 January 2024
How did this movie get a 6 rating???? First, great cast. I LOVE Issa Raye & LaKeith Stanfield-for Issa Raye, I LOVED the Insecure series & I haven't seen anything with LaKeith Stanfield in it that I haven't thought he was amazing. Second, the story was very sweet and made me think about my own days meeting new people, first dates, and new love. Lastly, the vibe was amazing. Great soundtrack, beautiful cinematography... Reminds me of the great stories of the 90s (Dead Presidents, Sugar Hill, etc.), but Love Jones in particular. If you enjoyed Love Jones you will enjoy The Photograph! Give it a try!

Chinatown (1974)

Does nothing ever change?
14 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie... I hate when I don't know how important it is to watch carefully and then at the end I think I missed some of the little details, or, just as likely, I do catch them and am not sure I'm putting everything together correctly because I'm left stunned and emotionally hurting. Chinatown makes me feel this way. Without knowing anything about LA's agricultural history, I figured there was some shady real estate stuff and water diversion about halfway through. What took me by surprise was the daughter plot twist. And what broke my heart was the senseless killing of Evelyn at the end. Do we not learn anything from our mistakes? We're still letting the wealthy destroy nature and our resources for their own gain. The powerful can still get away with anything. C0ps are still pursuing ... I don't know... "suspects" (?) recklessly, whether by middle of the street shootouts or high speed chases. And just like dad/grandpa victoriously walks off daughter/granddaughter at the end, the cycle just continues over and over. How is this movie, made 50 years ago, portraying 100 years ago, STILL relevant??

American Horror Story: Something's Coming (2022)
Season 11, Episode 1
10/10
Scary for the Average American-AMERICAN Horror Story
11 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think this is my favorite season (in addition to Season 7 about the election). These two grab me because they are more real for the average American; they're things that are much more plausible in happening during my lifetime. I wouldn't call myself a conspiracy theorist, but I definitely believe the individuals in positions of power make some horribly hurtful decisions for us. I don't know if the government was involved in developing a disease to wipe out citizens they determined to be unwanted, but we know they were directly involved in ignoring the severity of AIDS which could have prevented the rapid progression & so many deaths. This season, like Season 7, not only scares me because of what we as humans are capable of in leading to our own destruction, but they make me sad for exactly the same reason. NYC is a blatant example of how hate, ignorance, and ego will be what destroys us.

Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021–2022)

Not what it seems
23 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the first season with someone else and in this case that meant that I missed key points and nuances. Because of that I can't say exactly when I might have picked up on what became my real opinion had I watched it by myself. I didn't dislike the first season and I'm so glad I finished the show by myself. To me, this show became so much more than the light comedy of Kevin's world versus the dark reality of Allison's. It's really the story of a woman in an emotionally abusive relationship, how trapped and isolated she feels, and how she comes up with crazy escape plans out of desperation. Good show.

Liked but now NOPE

I enjoyed this show for the first few episodes until I realized she's a gutter & was gonna take down as many walls as possible. But that wasn't what really did it for me.

She's gentrifying. & from what I read from Chicago community members, she & HGTV aren't respectful.

This show is obviously just to make money, making it a big no for me.

3 is for the cast only
24 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was trash. About 15 minutes in, as soon as Scarlett makes an appearance, I knew either he would kill her, she would kill him, or someone would kill someone. Not one character was likable except maybe the dad. She's the deluded stereotypical mistress, he's obsessed and manipulative, the girlfriend is whiny and clingy... I don't know why I bothered to the end :/

Hard to watch doesn't mean it's not realistic
24 April 2022
This show is going to be really polarizing. People who don't have to face particular issues like the rac!al disparities in this c0untry, particularly within the just!ce system won't be able to handle this. Ign0rance is bliss. But this story and stories like it need to be told and shown. I hope AMC keeps it because there are definitely folx who appreciate it.

Two Sentence Horror Stories: Heirloom (2022)

Solid attempt with a hard to convey message in 30 minutes!
3 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some people are very uncomfortable with stories that are different from the norm/what's expected when they center around rac1sm. This episode I think was the only of the series (I've watched two seasons) that gave me chills. From the beginning, after seeing the tree and a family of color, I immediately knew the direction. The story reminded me of Peele's Get Out and the song Strange Fruit. Creepy and sad.

So real it hurts!
20 December 2021
I'm a teacher and watched the first episode on my first weekend of Winter Break-maybe too soon to be mentally thrown back into the classroom! That's how accurate this show is... I love the really optimistic and stubborn main character and the still engaged veteran with a tough but solid heart. I definitely look forward to seeing what other storylines are in the future!

Maybe they can kill off Jenny...?
13 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
She is so irritating. The writing for her and Travis is so bad. Under-covers don't meet in the open and have loud arguments in the hotel room they're known to be staying in. Unless they're making Travis long term he'll be dying soon; maybe he can take Jenny with him.

Staying relevant
11 December 2021
I LOVED the series and first movie-when they first aired. The second movie had moments where I cringed but my love kept me there. I recently tried to watch some of the old seasons and just couldn't. It's crazy to read how many people on here let their rac!st and h0m0phob!c opinions shine when faced with a diversified show.

Every episode gives me feelings
10 December 2021
I'm really loving this show and every episode increasingly makes me say "awww". The characters are sweet but not perfect, and I appreciate that nothing is resolved within the 25 minute episode. The one with granddad's car, the one with Kevin just wanting his big brother, and this one, showing that everyone has a story and deserves empathy... I'm hooked.

The Wonder Years (2021–2023)

The same but different -still powerful!
15 November 2021
Wikipedia defines a reboot as a "new start to an established fictional universe, work, or series. A reboot discards continuity to re-create its characters, plotlines and backstory from the beginning." That's exactly what The Wonder Years is doing-offering a different perspective based on what the 60's could have been like for a Black family. If you're looking for a reMAKE you may be disappointed. But if you are open-minded, there are relevant and important storylines across the board, starting with the opening lines of the first episode. And for those of you looking for the same story about the same family, mad that Kevin isn't present, be aware that Fred Savage is the executive producer.

Super real
23 June 2021
To the people who don't like the characters: I can only guess that you yourself and no one you've supported emotionally have hit that time of life when things feeling wrong, including the moves you're making, and you aren't satisfied with where you're at but you're scared to move on. They're the lucky ones I guess, except that maybe they lack perspective and/or empathy. I'd say wait for the mid-life crisis to hit! This show is super real in terms of the situations... The characters are figuring everything out-their careers/jobs, their romantic & friend relationships. The show is funny, frustrating, engaging, and I find myself hoping for the best for the main characters because their happy endings show me the possibility of mine. Everyone may not be able to relate to the story lines, but some definitely can because I do!
