Black Mirror: Demon 79 (2023)
The end of Black Mirror
I have watched the last episode of this Black Mirror series and I most say I am quite disappointed. Where the series used to be critical and insightfull regarding technological progress, now a bleak fantasy show is left. What I used to love about Black Mirror is that is left you thinking about what future we are creating with thechnology and whether this is a good or a bad thing. I used to be inspired, but now the aim seems to be solely entertainment. This last episode is not bad on its own, but it has nothing to do with what Black Mirror used to be. Its a fantasy/horror story about a girl who accidentally summons a deamon who in his place orders her to go and kill 3 people. If would rated this higher just like I would rate Loch Henry higher if it was a series of its own, but since it is in the Black Mirror series it is simply dissapointing because the lack of intelectual challange.
It fits though in this whole season. It had only 2 of 5 episodes that were Black Mirror like. "Joan is awful" and. "Beyond the sea" both of which were mediocre in that sense. The rest are simply fantasy stories.
Im not sure if this season had new writers, or if the writers have lost their inspiration, but I feel this series was not worthy of the title "Black Mirror". If there will be another series, I surely hope they will find back the original vibe, since there are enough technological developments to question. But please not another series like this!
Black Mirror: Loch Henry (2023)
Dark? Yes! Black Mirror? No!
I have very mixed feelings about this episode. On its own it is a decent thriller and admittedly has some Black Mirror atmosphere. I love the settng in Scotland, the Scottisch accents and the cinematography. The story is well told and I must admit, I did not see the twist comming. So great stuff up till now, but.....
What does this have to do with Black Mirror? Wasn't this a show about technology and what distopic future it would entail? I mean I had fun watching this episode, but it isn't thought provoking in any shape or form. It is just a thriller with a plot twist. The whole story could be set in the present or even the past. What is the message? Be carefull what you tape with VHS?
Lacking this element, I can only award it 6/10 while if there would be a Black Mirror twist it could have been 9.
Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful (2023)
Not bad, but the script writer has obviously no clue what a quantum computer is
As a fan of Black Mirror, I was really happy to see the show return for a sixth season. I'm nog sure if the series needed the big hollywood names to get attention. I think the fans already know it and who doesn't won't be convinced by these stars.
In general as a start of the season this is not bad. Like a good Black Mirror plot is is critical towards technology, and in this case even towards Netflix, which is kind of ironic an funny.
The only thing that bothers me is how they make quantum computers look. Like they are kind of compact supercomputers. This is just plainly misleading. They should have done better research. Overall, it was an entertaining episode.
Blackhat (2015)
An insult to hackers and movie in general
I was just looking for simple entertainment on netflix and saw this movie starring Chris Hemsworth about a hacker. I did not expect too much, but it looked kind of promising.
Know knowing a bit about IT security myself, this movie just baffled me. It got all the Hollywood hacking cliche's and on top of that a ridicullously bad plot.
So what is wrong with it:
- Hackers are usually not insanely handsome
- Hackers cannot read binairy
- The NSA does not have a public portal to a supercomputer which requires just a username and password
- Computers are far beyond green monochrome screens nowadays
- Computer do not and never have made matrix printer sounds when rendering text to screen
- Hackers are usually not martial arts and weapons specialist
All that aside, suppose you are willing to look beyond all this, it is still a very weak plot. A hacker is taken from prison because he is the only one who can prevent another hacker to abuse his code. From that moment he seamleslsly becomes part of a police SWAT team and finally singlehandedly save the day shooting all bad guys.
Really I was not looking for something intellectually challanging by all means, but this? Come on!!!
Genesis: Paradise Lost (2017)
Looking for confirmation instead of truth
This movie shows the findings of some Christian "scientists". It would make you believe that the goal of non-Christian science is to disprove what is written in the bible. It is like science all backwards. These Christian "scientists" start off with the conclusion they want to find, namely the creation according to the book of Genesis, and discard all proof that points another way. Contrary to real scientist that first make observations an take into account all data to draw conclusions. It baffles me that these people can even hold degrees in science since they have no intention to find the truth. They are just looking for confirmation of their preoccupied ideas.
Sorry dear Christian readers, but the earth is not 6000 years old and men never walked along side melon eating T-Rexes.
I'll mark that this review does not contain any spoilers since there is nothing to spoil about this movie. I had some good laughs, but it is utter garbage.
Red Notice (2021)
Stupid
A little Indiana Jones, a bit of The Italian Job and a bit of Deadpool mixed with loads of plot twists. It adds up to a really unlogical plot with a few funny moments. If this is the best Netflix can produce on a record budget I would really urge them to stop their efforts and lower my subscription fee. This is a waste of resources.
Machete (2010)
Politically incorrect, over the top, I love it
If you are taking this movie serious, you are not going to enjoy it. Just sit back and go with it. Enjoy how Danny Trejo refers to himself in third person in the few dialogues that he has. Just when you think it is getting unrealistic they will add some more to it. Great fun if you understand self-mockery, probably anoying if you don't.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Will it ever develop?
I've watched season 1 and half of season 2. The whole story development so far could have been told in 2 episodes. Man this series is slow and repetitive. And people here are saying these are the good seasons and it gets slow and repetitive after this. I already started skipping scenes so far so I'm not going to waste any more time on this.
The Witcher (2019)
Great scenery, decent acting terrible script
Let's start off with the good. The Witcher looks great. The scenery, the costumes, special effects, it's all there. Also the protagonist played by Henry Cavill is cool and funny. So this could become something great.... However, the script is downright terrible! No general story line, one dimensional characters and utter confusing flash back and forwards. I pushed myself to watch all episodes of the first season, but I honestly cannot tell you what the general plot is. Not having read the books or even having played the games, the story makes no sense whatsoever. Not one moment during the whole series I cared for any of the characters.
A huge waste of so much money and potential. I probably won't watch the next season if it ever comes out.
Duplicity (2009)
Who cons who?
I saw the movie last weekend, and I was expecting a romantic comedy with a strong plot. The cast is good, and the trailer looked promising. Unfortunately the movie could not meet my expectations. The idea for this movie could deliver a very interesting movie: an MI6 agent and a CIA agent decide to join forces to con a big firm and quickly earn a lot of money to lead an independent life. Unfortunately the story is told in a series of very confusing flashbacks. The story really is not that complex, but the way it is told makes it hard to follow. This is very different from a sophisticated plot. The central question in the movie is "Who cons who", but looking at it, most of the time you'll be wondering "What the hell is going on!!!". This is a shame, because this could have been so much better. Now it is somewhat enjoyable, but certainly not one to recommend.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
Entertaining, but not memorable
After the previous Bond "Casino Royale" my expectations for this one were high. I like Daniel Craig as James Bond. These movies do not contain all the Bond clichés, and that is certainly something that works well for the suspense. Unfortunately in this movie they cut out another part, and that is a well told story. From minute one, this movie is action, action and more action. The plot is really thin and most characters are shallow. I remember thinking during the break that the movie still needed to get started. The first half was like a 60 minute trailer: Lots of spectacular shots, but no clue what it is about.
It was good entertainment for the Friday night. It kept me well awake although I was sleepy, but its not one that I am going to remember a year from now.
Pledge This! (2006)
College according to Paris
I have seen many movies in my life, and some awful ones as well. But somehow the worst movies I saw still got ratings between 3 and 4 on IMDb. So I checked out the bottom 100 and I was curious how bad a movie could be. Since Paris Hilton stars at least 4 of the 100, this movie seamed to be a good choice. And it was. I managed to get though the whole 90 minutes, but not without pauses to reanimate my brain.
So what is the problem with this movie?
Story: It is sort of a simplified "Revenge of the Nerds" storyline, if that movie was to complicated, check this one
Acting: Paris Hilton is "playing" a bimbo with very rich parents, interested only in fashion and style. Amazing how she does that. To be in a sorority, I would say you need to go to college as well, and actually we see 2 scenes in a classroom. One class on fashion, in which a teacher is explaining something about Dolce & Gabanna, the other is on Kama Sutra. College according to Paris.
Targeted audience: Jokes are maybe funny to <12 year olds It has a strong sexual content, both verbally as well as visually. In many countries you'd have to be 18 to see it You would think it is a movie for girls, since it is all pink and fairytale like situated, but that does not match the shots of nude girls and lesbian insinuations.
So what do I think about this movie? It is probably funny if you are a 12 year old boy, and manage to get a hold on it and secretly watch it with your first girlfriend. For every other sane human being, abstain from this thing, or you might suffer irreversible brain damage.
For me it is a new baseline for my movie scale, I will need to rate some other movies that I rated 1 before up, because they were way better than this. Hopefully in a few weeks I will be able to do simple maths again.
A well deserved 1/10
