Helluva Boss: Truth Seekers (2021)
Helluva Boss at its peak
Amazing action scenes, plot, songs, visuals and characters. Now THIS is a helluva episode!
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
It's a flawed movie, but its messages on human relationtionships haven't been more important
The Mitchells vs The Machines has its flaws(the visual effects can get a bit annoying, there are some flaws in the script), but honestly, I think this is, above all else, an important movie, not just for kids, but for adults and teens in an age where human interactions and even emotional inteligence have diminished in many people. Like it or not, technology is a bit to blame on that, but thats besides the point.
This is a movie with a purpose to be launched in 2021 and that's one of the biggest honors I can give to a piece of art.
But enough with all this serious talk, this movie has other qualities. It's incredibly funny and looks really gorgeous. The camera angles were particularly good and the edition was greeeat. The characters are really well written and they're super expressive.
(Small thing, but I personally recomend you watching this movie in English, if you can. I personally think movies ethos kinda gets lost in translation, but that's just me)
Seriously, don't sleep on this.
Okja (2017)
Not an ET clone at all
Despite its poorly done slow start, what awaits you here is a phenomenal masterpiece.
Filled with dark humour and some surprisingly spectacular action scenes, this is a movie you can't miss.
Sure, the premisse is similar to ET, but its very different and more adult and political than it. It's also way darker, wich can be a problem to some people, specially considering one specific scene, but if you can get past that, you'll enjoy it.
The characters are surprisingly good, specially the villains, wich were very entertaining to see.
The humour was pretty good, although a bit cheesy at times.
The CGI does it job pretty well, but there's a certain character I wish we had seen at more detail.
And the action scenes... Boy, they're some of the most epic I've ever seen in movie, I'm not joking here!
DO NOT sleep on this movie, it will blow you away.
Helluva Boss: Murder Family (2020)
Phenomenal
This episode has an ambition compared to the others that makes it special. You can tell Spindlehorse wanted to start this show as strong as they could. Amazing tension that caught me completely offguard, amazing visuals, amazing action, amazing jokes, this is Helluva Boss at its strongest. The teachers backstory was not only surprisingly engaging, but incredibly fun and ridiculous. Without going into spoiler territory, lets just say that the episode's first scene is one of the greatest I've ever seen in any western adult cartoon comedy. This may be an unpopular opinion, but this is HB's best episode so far.
Helluva Boss: C.H.E.R.U.B (2021)
Another great episode
Really well paced with some really funny jokes and details. The plot is surprisingly engaging and creative in ideas, wich is refreshing to see after Sringbroken. This is one of those episodes where the creativity is more engaging than the jokes There's the plotwhole of the old man never reversing his age when he probably could, but aside from that, another solid episode.
It's also worth mentioning how this episode set up the CHERUB as future enemies of the IMP wich is a plus. Looking forward to it.
Helluva Boss: Pilot (2019)
Good for a pilot
When I saw the pilot back in 2019 I loved it and couldn't wait for the actual thing. But now, with 3 episodes in, its just not the same.
It's interesting to see how this show evolved. While Helluva Boss is basicly an R rated Looney Tunes, this pilot shows something that looks more like Space Force or The Office, but with a fantasy twist.
It's clear Medrano wanted this show to be character focused from the very beggining, and you can tell that. The episode does a great job at presenting them all and their dinamics with very little time. But it has issues. It' flashback structure was quite confusing and the comedy was very predicteable at times. However, it's still a funny episode, specially, when it comes to Blitzo and Stolas.
The character were really good and clearly left a good impression. Helluva Boss got one of "those" obcessive fanbases, mostly consisted of teens and young adults. While things eventually calmed down, the existence of such a devoted fandom to such a small piece of animation is impressive to say the least. Yes, it's true this show is connected to Hazbin Hotel, but even then, you can see the fans quickly fell in love with the characters for themselves, and not the world they were in. If you look at the fanart and fanfics of the time, the characters are clearly the focus. If all this isn't proof of a well done introduction, well done characters and character dinamics, then I don't know what it is.
Animation wise, it's a bit rough, but if you consider this is an indie project its almost jaw dropping. While I'm not 100% on board with Medrano's artistic decisions (particularly on the humans being too simplistic) this is still good looking. I'm a big fan of the collor pallette used here and the character designs are pretty good.
The musical number was great and gave the show and is captures really well the vibe the show is going to have.
The voice cast was great too and had some big names, wich was impressive for an indie project.
Overall, solid pilot for a show that's going to be polished way more in the future. Stick around and you won't be disappointed.
