Succession (2018)
Watch the 1958 movie "A Lion in Winter" instead
Initially I thought 'Succession' was great and heavily inspired by Henry II manipulating his sons - who would achieve the throne? The three princes endlessly fought with their father (the king) and the princes continuously stabbing each other in the back or conspiring with the king of France.
In the 1958 movie "A Lion in Winter", there's a scene where the three princes are in a dungeon with the king - the princes are planning to shiv (knife) the king. There's a near identical scene in "Succession" which was terrific. There were other scenes in "Succession" that played homage to "A Lion in Winter."
We binged watched the first two seasons staying up far too late into the night.
But afterwards, the endless filler annoyed me: "You good?" and "Yeah, no" said hundreds upon hundreds of times. Countless scenes of drinking whiskey and champagne. An entire season could easily be eliminated if the filler was removed.
One of the worst fillers was Tom repeatedly humiliating Greg. After the hundredth time, I skipped those scenes.
More filler was Rome just blathering utter nonsensical sentences.
The shaky camera effect and zooming in jumped the shark with "Hill Street Blues." Sometimes I had to close my eyes so that I wouldn't get nauseous from the shaky camera.
Truth be told, I love expletives - I'm like an 11 year old. But in moderation. When every sentence in "Succession" has an expletive(s), the naughty words lose their power.
Yes, the characters are horribly annoying - that's the point. Does anyone think that CEOs of major corporations are gentle empathetic souls?
Nature: Owl Power (2015)
Good but the wife's non-stop nervous laughter was very distracting
This could have been a good educational show about owls if they edited out the wife's constant nervous forced cackling laughter.
8/10 for owls but realize that most of the owl footage are from the couple's own owls.
1/10 because the abrasive annoying laughter was terribly distracting.
The Resident (2018)
Resident running out of hospital to grab a suicidal patient?
This boggles my mind: In s05/e16 ('6 volts') a determined suicidal patient scrams out of the hospital, steps into traffic in front of a city bus.
A doctor/surgeon runs out of the hospital knocking down the patient "saving" her.
The doctor is hailed as a hero.
What if the doctor knocking down the patient on the city street injured the patient? That's assault. If the bus hit the doctor, who is going to pay the doctor's medical costs? Not the hospital. The doctor's responsibilities are within the hospital -- he's not a sworn LEO or even a security guard.
If the doctor was hit by the bus, the hospital is down one surgeon.
Employees of stores know that you don't chase shoplifters out of the store. The store will fire you.
Voyagers (2021)
A bad version of Lord of the Flies
I watch movies without reading comments since I don't want to be influenced/prejudiced.
As I was watching this, I said "hoo boy, I bet a bazillion people are saying that this is just another attempt at Lord of the Flies" and apparently I was correct.
The film starts off interestingly enough but rapidly devolves when the only adult dies.
How did perfect genetically engineered embryos come out far worse than the bratty kids at the local bad high school?
I'm not expecting reality in movies. I want flight-from-reality entertainment but not stupid lazy screen writing.
Half way through, I gave up.
Greenland (2020)
When a film begins with insulin or an inhaler, it's doomed.
This is yet another film where the parents are desperately looking for insulin or an inhaler for their kid. The giveaway is the camera pointing to some life saving drug in the first minute or two of the film. And then showing an adorable child.
The comet is just a backdrop for the insulin/family crisis.
The CGI was simply awful.
I wanted to turn it off after about 20 minutes (the insulin! insulin! insulin! was driving me crazy) but my friend wanted to watch so I stayed.
The Good Doctor (2017)
Season 4 is horrible. I loved the first season.
I know that medical/legal/tech TV shows/movies are strictly entertainment and require total suspense of disbelief but I liked the first season where Murphy is able to mentally synthesize a solution (using fairly good CGI) from a wide variety of disparate data.
But season after season, the show is less about Murphy and like so many shows has degenerated into a bad soap opera.
Season 4 is a total dismal failure. Suddenly, the show has taken a new turn. We're very liberal, politically and socially, but this season is a bridge too far.
I used to look forward to watching this show for light entertainment but now I'm getting annoyed so why should I continue watching? I'm predicting that this show will be cancelled after this season.
