Lightyear (2022)
A disappointment from a studio hellbent on losing their reputation.
"Lightyear" was a disappointment. I was initially excited to see this movie, especially after the trailer released. But, sadly, in my opinion, it is not some great continuation of the Toy Story arc, but instead a movie made for the explicit purpose of saying that they did.
As of late, Pixar's movies have felt strung together, with no real rhyme or reason to have happened. That being said, Lightyear, from an animation perspective, is a masterpiece. But, of course, not everyone is interested in seeing what is basically a Pixar light show.
The plot feels like a slog. The movie itself felt unfocused.
I am certainly outside the target demographic for this movie, but I, even though they are animated children's films, still find time to enjoy Pixar movies. I enjoyed this movie as well, but it doesn't live up to the hype, and, as a result, falls flat of what nearly everyone expects from a Pixar movie.
Uncharted (2022)
Action flick with big stars, action, betrayal, and some flaws
Tough one to unpack.
The acting is good, there is chemistry between the actors, the acting front in its entirety is top-notch. However, I do have a feeling that the chemistry displayed wouldn't have manifested without Holland and Wahlberg taking center stage.
The action is great, although in some places the CGI is all too obvious, it will fulfill anyone's action itch.
There were some moments when I chuckled in this movie, which I wasn't expecting considering it being an action movie.
The plot is decently crafted, the way it takes form is good as well.
The major flaw here is that it isn't faithful to the games, according to many. Fine for me, I've never played them, but with a media franchise like Uncharted you can't look at the movie as an independent sort of thing. In the world of book-inspired movies, sure, you can afford to change things around to make things a little more interesting. Book plots aren't for everyone, I'll admit that. But with a video game, where interpretations are solid across the board, you can't make large departures.
You may ask why I'm rating it an 8 instead of a 6/7. That is because this movie in it of itself, is a great one. You don't have to have played the games to understand it. If this were a completely original plot, created just now explicitly for this movie, and the film would have no connection to any video game, then it would easily be one of the best films put out by Hollywood this year.
But it is connected to a franchise, whether or not the creators of this film liked that. As a movie itself, the plot was enjoyable, and the film was one of the most enjoyable I've seen this year. But as a film extension of a video-game franchise, it falls flat on its face in the worst kind of way.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Easily one of the best historical movies that I've watched
'The Imitation Game' is a brilliant movie. It tells the story of Alan Turing, whose cracking of the Nazis' Enigma has been attributed to shortening World War II and saving millions of lives.
Turing is played, and played excellently, by Benedict Cumberbatch, who has since gone on to a bit more fanfare playing the character Doctor Strange for Marvel.
This movie makes you think. It doesn't depict Turing as some perfect man. He was depicted as quite controlling and narcissistic in the film, but that kind of film is the best.
One that doesn't glorify its heroes and characters, one which shows imperfections, but at the end of the day, still leaves the viewer in support of the person being portrayed.
Definitely a must-watch for anyone interested in movies of any historical flavor.
The Final Days (1989)
An amazing depiction of the man behind the image, and how it all came crumbling down.
This is truly excellent.
It shows a summarization of what happened during the Watergate scandal which brought down President Richard Nixon. This film shows that while he did some bad things in office, he was still a human being, something that many detractors of political figures forget.
It is human nature to make bad decisions, to make mistakes. This film shows that. It exhibits a President who attempted to do good during his Presidency, but when it came to handling Watergate, he only made the problem worse.
As miserable as those Watergate days were for this nation, and the Presidency, it shows that Nixon was a human being with a family who supported him.
I see how some may find this "overly sympathetic". It truly isn't to me. It acknowledges the downright terrible things the President did, but it also highlights the insecurities of the man who was, with every day, being faced with a more and more impossible situation as he tried to defend his reputation and his administration.
A great film for people interested in Nixon.
Funny Money (2006)
Needs more locations, but otherwise is good
This is a decent movie. It definitely needed more locations in terms of, the airport, per say, but the film is decent in itself. Chevy Chase does a fine job, but Penelope Miller played her role a bit too hysterical for my taste. That's my take on it, but since it is a film adaptation of a farce comedy play, then I suggest you watch it yourself and make your own interpretations, as opinions vary, especially in this genre.
