The Covenant (2023)
Paying off an emotional debt
This movie is another great addition to American War Dramas.
It has the right amount of thrill, action and deep emotions at play. The performances by Dar Salim and Jake Gyllenhaal elevate the screenplay and give you a reason to invest in their emotions. It highlights a very important topic about one of the few consequences of Afghan war and the mess that was left behind. The camera work in few scenes is exceptional and the director has tried to draw an analogy between the emotional struggle and treacherous landscape of Afghanistan. I especially liked how minimal yet effective and powerful were the dialogues in movie. Obviously Jake's presence does half of the work. The more I watch his work, the more I love him.
Devrai (2004)
Exceptional performances
This movie is highly underrated for its topic choice and also for its performances. It takes a mature take on the complexities of mind and portrays it excellently by drawing analogies of devrai. Atul Kulkarni is so amazing! His mental struggle, the lonely place where he tries to fit in but is outcasted every-time, the pain of not being able to express inner struggle it just a testament to what an exceptional actor he is and so is Sonali Kulkarni. She is beautiful in showing what the closed ones to such patients go through. I have personally seen a lot of woman like her in real life, she is genuine in her art.
CAT (2022)
Randeep Hooda you have my heart!
Another good one by Netflix. It initially starts slow but story picks up midway. The back and forth moving screenplay perfectly unfolds the story and establishes characters, their morality and motives. I watched entire series in Punjabi and it is best seen that way rather than dubbed Hindi version. After a very long time watched a very well written webseries. All performances are top notch and Randeep Hooda my god! What a powerful performer. He portrays immense emotions through even simple actions like cleaning floor and tying turban. He is a gem of an actor and Netflix has capitalized very well on it. Can't wait for next season.
Masoom (2022)
An interplay of complex relations and emotions
Truth is not simple, it is complex. The story is one of the best written in a long time and even more brilliantly directed. It engages you into believing what it isn't - a thriller. Yes this web series is not a thriller however, it is set up like a thriller because that is how we uncover the truth. Each emotion is portrayed with care and compassion and that is the beauty of this show- it gives you time to empathize with its characters. Classy performance by Boman Irani, his character is relatable yet very layered and played with finesse by him. The supporting cast has done a commendable job by supporting the storyline with really good effort. Samara has done good considering this being her debut, would love to see her more. The best part about the show were its poetries and songs. I hope hotstar releases the entire album on youtube like grahan.
