Juno (2007)
A lovable romantic comedy
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this film. There seemed to be a lot of fuss about it and thought I'd give it a go. During the first 30mins I was getting rather bored and annoyed as there was far to much music being played in the background, but I started to ignore it and really got into the story line. I thought it was going to be a bit like the film "Fifteen and Pregnant" which starred Kirsten Dunst, but it was nothing like it. Not only was this film enjoyable to watch, and sweet. It had some very funny lines in it. Ellen Page was wonderful as Juno and I'm surprised that I haven't seen her in many other films. I loved watching the romantic connection between Juno and her boyfriend in the film played by Michael Cera. They so obviously really liked each other but didn't want to admit it (I'm not giving away the ending) I like how different this film was, the way they showed how in love the young couple were. There are a lot of young girls getting pregnant these days and they end up keeping it which means they need to grow up quickly and don't get to be a child any more, it's very sad. In this film Juno knows she can't look after the child. She decides to go for an abortion thinking she'll get rid of it and not have to tell anyone about it, but she soon realises that its something she cannot go through with she comes to a decision to put the unborn child up for adoption. She finds a lovely couple Vanessa and Mark Loring, desperate for a baby who are almost to perfect although Vanessa seems more interested in having the baby than Mark. With Juno now faced with telling her father and step mother who would rather hear that she is on drugs or in trouble at school they too are shocked by the news but are eager to help with the adoption. With the pregnancy going well, Juno seems to be getting on really well with Vanessa and Mark Loring, but one afternoon while Juno spends time with Mark he tells her something she doesn't want to hear. After the baby is born, Juno and Paulie, her boyfriend both decide they don't want to see the baby and leave him for Vanessa to take home with her. The ending is adorable and made me cry. I loved it and would recommend it.
Hollyoaks (1995)
A different kind of soap
I love this show. The characters are wonderful and the actors and actress's are terrific. I was hooked ever since Toby the killer, now I just can't stop watching it, there are always new characters arriving which is great, it keeps it fresh. The story lines are always new and exciting. There is comedy, something to make you cry, gasp, and keep you on the edge of your seat. Its a great show for teens to watch, as most teens are either thinking about or going through what Hollyoaks episodes has written about. The first time I cried while watching Hollyoaks was during the fire in The Dog in the pond, when they killed of the twins Mel and Sophie, it felt strange not seeing them on the screen afterwards, I think they were a big part of Hollyoaks.
I think everyone can relate to at least one of the characters, Becca Dean was one of my favourite characters, she may of been a bit depressed a lot and crying all the time, but she was going through so much, she started a relationship with a student because she obviously unhappy in her marriage, and wanted something different and exciting, she wanted passion. She fell in love with Justin Burton. A while after she got pregnant everyone found out her and Justin's little secret, was the baby's father Jake Dean or Justin Burton? Becca became bored and fed up with Justin and realised how much of a kid he really is, and that she made a mistake. She decided to get rid of him and told him its over, but that was only the beginning. Justin took the break up hard, and told the police that Becca had been molesting him the whole time and pressed charges on her. Becca was just settling back into life on her own with her loving sister Nancy, when the police arrive at the door. Becca was sent to prison and had her baby, Justin never confessed that he was lying, until recently, Becca was ready to go home after Justin confessed, right before she was stabbed to death. It was very tragic. Jake and Nancy were left to look after the baby, baby Charlie was proved to be Jakes, and Justin was branded a lier, poor Nancy is in pieces that shes lost her one and only darling sister the only thing that keeps her going is that she has still got her baby nephew to look after.
A long story I know, its all so tragic, and the story still continues, Justin still hasn't got his comeuppance.
All in all this show is superb, it should win more awards. I think people who don't like it should give it a chance. Emmerdale and Eastenders are boring compared to Hollyoaks.
There is always something going on in HOllyoaks village, give a go you'll love it.
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004)
Better than I thought it would be
I loved this film. I did put it off for a while, thinking it would be just another sequel that we don't need, but when I watched it, I realised its a completely different film all together. A young girl and her family move to Cuba just before the revolution, like the original, Katey Miller (Romola Garai) is expected to marry someone her parents approve of, which is were James Phelps (Jonathan Jackson) comes in, the snobby rich guy, only after one thing. Meanwhile Katey meets Javier Suarez (Diego Luna) a waiter, who begins to show her the time her life by dancing with her secretly for a dance contest. I was surprised to see Patrick Swayze in the film, who played Johnny Castle in the first movie, he appeared in a scene trying to encourage Katey to take part in the dance contest. The original was set in 1963, and this movie was set in 1958, so i'm guessing this movie was meant to be before the 1st one actually happened. Patrick Swayze can still dance the night away, and he'll always be a great actor, but the star of this movie was Romola Garai and Diego Luna, a great actress and actor. The script was predictable, a rich girl and a poor boy falling in love, but that didn't put me off. Unfortunately this movie will never beat the original, to me its a classic.
The music, the clothes, the dancing everything was sexy and stylish, a great chick flick for the girls.
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Good, but disappointing
I saw this movie as a last resort, just for something to do. To me I think remakes aren't usually very good, but look at War of the worlds, everyone seemed to think that would turn out to be awful, but it wasn't, it was fantastic. Unfortunately this movie didn't interest me in the slightest, I felt everything was going to fast, and I you didn't get to know the characters very well, even the main character, Jill Johnson, played by Camilla Belle. I have to admit, I was wondering what was going to happen next after every scene, and what was going to happen at the end, which was the part I was disappointed in. There were some annoying bits, like why did it take the police so long to get there when they found out the stranger was in the house?, it was very convenient that they turned up at the end. Other than this the movie did have its good points, Camilla Belle is a terrific actress, and the story line was great, I think they just try-ed to finish it off to quickly. I would recommend this film, after all you have to watch a film before you can judge it.
Desperate Housewives (2004)
A neighbourhood that isn't always as it seems
I couldn't wait to see Desperate Housewives, and I was extremely impressed when I saw it, every character is different. My favourite has to be Gabrielle Solis, played by Eva Longoria, she definitely brings glamour to the show, and I love the clothes she wears. I am beginning to feel sorry for Bree Van De Kamp though, played by Marcia Cross, she seemed always perfect at the beginning , but now after everything thats happened to her through out the entire series so far, she really deserves to have something good happen to her. I liked how they started the first episode with a suicide, that got me hooked, I desperately wanted to know why she did it, so I kept on watching. I think all the actress's and actors are fantastic in the Desperate Housewives, I don't have a bad thing to say about it, because its got everything, romance, comedy, and mystery. I feel that this is definitely a great show, and i'm sure it will keep getting better every year.
Titanic (1997)
A tragic love story set on the famous Titanic ship
I first saw this movie while living out in Cyprus, and I loved it. Everything about it was fantastic, I didn't want it to end. The cast was great, I thought Kathy Bates was perfect as Molly Brown, but Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet were terrific as Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater, they had me on the edge of my seat, I was almost crying by the end of it, and I sure i'm not the only one, thanks to Leonardo's magnificent performance. The grand staircase was my favourite part of the ship, it was beautiful, every tiny detail just took my breath away. I have watched this film so many times now, but I still can't get enough of it. From the incredible sets, to the amazing costumes, this film is truly magical,
