It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: 2020: A Year In Review (2021)
Ehh..
When I heard they were making a new season my first thought was that it was gonna suck, mostly because the show's gotten more and more political and the latest years have been terrible for politics. So when I watched it... I mean.. I expected worse. It's not the worst. That being said, it's not particularly funny either. I watched ep 1 and 2 and got halfway through the 3rd and then didn't really bother with the rest cause I laughed very little.
As for the whole "they became more political" vs "they were always political"... yes and no to both. The show has always had political references and a bit of edge but it was never really ABOUT politics. Like they make references to jihad and economic crises and such but the plot is mostly still just them doing their own thing. Furthermore, most of the show's funniest moments are the ones where they are non-political and they are just doing their own thing. The family fight episode, the therapy episode, when Frank hides in the couch, etc all those classic moments were when the show was standing on it's own legs, while in the recent seasons it's become overly obsessed with the current news. S15 Episode 2 they are just throwing out buzzword after buzzword trying to make jokes, and most of those jokes are based on politics rather than the show's own plot and funny characters. Also, it doesn't really make sense for the characters to be apologizing for past jokes that were intentionally supposed to be offensive. The same characters have ruined peoples' lives and done horrible things but blackface is where they draw the line?
All being said, the statements made weren't really very bad, they just felt forced and unnecessary, and the jokes kind of landed flat. It doesn't matter if they had been left oriented or right oriented. It all just feels like a political comedy sketch on youtube anyway. It might be time to just let Always Sunny end.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Inaccurate, poor attempt at satire
The movie just makes it LOOK real enough, and does include a few legitimate criticisms, to trick people into thinking that this is a "totally accurate of what society is like right now", but it isn't. There are so many things wrong with it. Especially from the angle that the comet is supposed to be climate change.
1. Speaking out against climate change is not a controversial opinion. I'm pretty sure it is the most popular opinion you could possibly have. The fact that these people think they will be censored and ostracized for saying "global warming bad" just goes to show how delusional they are.
2. The media does not refuse to acknowledge negative news, in fact it's literally the opposite, if there's anything you learn from following the news it's that they are OBSESSED with negativity. If there was a comet heading towards Earth, everyone would be onto the topic in instant chaos. Once again, these writers don't seem to be living in the same world as us.
3. Climate change cannot be compared to a comet. It's not something you can just solve by shooting a missile at it. It's an international, heavily political issue, which will require a lot of sacrifices to be made in order to fix it. But of course, climate activists don't actually want to think or work towards anything, just make a movie demanding others to make a change while calling them stupid, that's much easier.
4. This movie seems to really hate everyday people who aren't constantly obsessed about political issues. Do you not understand that normal citizens cannot do anything about it? They can't stop a comet and they can't force a bunch of chinese factories to shut down. Why are you antagonizing them? They're not the ones causing it.
5. This movie actually just seems to really hate people. I guess that's more of a personal gripe for me but I personally don't respect people with the "grr I hate everyone" mentality. It's just really easy to decide that everyone is stupid and evil and selfish, instead of actually trying to understand humans' psychological complexity.
6. Conspiracy theorists really don't make up as large an amount of the population as this film seems to think. A large majority of people believe climate change is real. The ones who don't, do not really have a lot of power.
I could go on and on. The point is, no, this is not "just like real life", it does not "hit the nail on the head", it's a biased and unrealistic satire made from a person who clearly doesn't actually listen to the people they disagree with, they just listened to other people complaining about them. But I know people will just tell me "this movie is about you", because it is an easy way to shut someone you disagree with down, without actually having any explanation or depth to it. Oh hey, kind of like this movie.
Free Guy (2021)
Doesn't make any sense
Ok I'll ignore the politics for once (although they also suck) and just focus on the terrible logic behind it. What is this game even supposed to be? Like some GTA MMO? I'm sure something like that exists on the internet but not any actual major worldwide games. If you're gonna use an MMO it makes more sense to use a fantasy game, if you want a modern action themed game it would usually be single player. Also you are seriously telling me every one of these npcs are sentient and yet not a single one has ever tried to actually talk to someone? Also what is this bs where every single person in this supposedly huge playerbase decides to pick the evil path? Play any game with a morality system and you'll often find quite an amount of players on the 'good' side. Don't even get me started on how little the movie understands what godmode actually is. And that's just the start of it, it's obvious that the writers of this movie know very little about video games. Why make a movie about a hobby you don't have?
Horrible Bosses (2011)
It is extremely uncomfortable around sexual assault joke
Look I'm not some oversensitive person who thinks you aren't allowed to make edgy jokes but when you do so it has to be obvious that you know the thing you're joking about is terrible, in this movie they have a character be literally raped by the boss and it's treated as silly, the other characters keep writing him off when he complains about being constantly sexually harrassed and say that he should be just be grateful and have sex with her, it is very uncomfortable and tasteless. Yes it's an old movie but it has aged terribly. Please be warned if you are thinking of watching it.
Modern Family: iSpy (2014)
I like this show but the themes and message of this episode was uncomfortable
The whole episode is basically about privacy invasion and they play it off as a silly quirky thing families do when the mother is literally GPS tracking her kids, spying on them with drones and going through their phones and pc's. They often do morally questionable things in Modern Family but usually gets their comeuppance for it, however this episode basically ends with her unapologetically telling the kids that it's perfectly ok for her to cross their boundaries because boo hoo its so hard being a mom and being worried about your kids. And no one challenges her on this the episode just ends. As a very private person one of the things I always appreciated my mom for the most was that she let my business be my business. Even though sometimes it meant I got hurt. In fact I'm glad it happened and I got to make my own mistakes and learn from them. So it creeped me out a little to see the show go "It's perfectly okay to not let you have any private life because I care about you!!" No. That mentality is literally a common red flag for an abuser.
