Dredd (2012)
Fantastic scifi that somehow slipped under the radar
I'm not a comic book fan, nor much of a fan of comic book movies. I had a couple of issues of 2000AD when I was a kid, which I enjoyed, but I simply enjoyed books more. But boy, did I enjoy this movie!!
The visual and sound effects are simply superb, and full credit must go to the editing teams on that one. I'm blind in one eye, so 3D is something I'm never going to appreciate, but even in 2D the action scenes and backdrops are just amazing. There's just enough blood to make you cringe a little, without becoming a gore fest.
The director has done a great job in portraying the world in an uncomplicated yet enticing way, and the cast all perform admirably. Like many action/scifi movies, this will not win awards for the plot or acting prowess, but is definitely a cut above the rest in terms of how much you'll enjoy it.
The Ward (2010)
The Yawn
If you are reading this, you are probably deciding whether to pay to watch this movie. Don't. Move on. Anything else you are considering will be more entertaining.
Even if you're thinking, 'What the hell, it might be good for a laugh!', believe me you won't laugh. Most likely you'll do as I did and keep dozing off.
Effects seem to be borrowed from the Michael Jackson Thriller music video (no really, I think they took a zombie suit from the wardrobe), and any frights you get are 100% on cue. A very poor effort from a movie maker past his expiry date.
Silver Streak (1976)
Top notch action comedy
I have recently begun to take time to watch older films (especially those of the 1970s) and have more often than not been rewarded for it. Silver Streak was no exception. Wilder shows his class in the leading role, skillfully using comedic timing to enhance his part as the unlikely hero. Jill Clayburgh and Richard Pryor lead off an outstanding supporting cast, who all contribute believable characters to a well constructed and executed storyline. The plot is kept simple so the audience is soon drawn, and will enjoy what quickly becomes an entertaining film with an explosive finale. If you are getting bored with the same old, same old produced these days, all is not lost. There is an abundance of high class movies that I guarantee will keep you entertained if you just give them a chance. So the next time you are browsing the rental store, don't be put off by the unfashionable cover art and take it home!
