Tenet (2020)
Intractable
Managed to stay with this movie right to the end, but it became a bit of a slog. Sure, some of the special effects were great, but my ability to follow the plot fell away about an hour before the end. I found myself scrolling through social media a few times due to boredom. The wife and kid angle was cliched in my opinion.
Foundation (2021)
Ruined a classic
Having read all the books, I was really looking forward to this. The foundation series of novels is a classic of SF literature. Quite why a screen writer thinks they can improve on this classic by adding clones and other nonsense is beyond me. It's like spray painting a smiley face on the Mona Lisa. Some good special effects but that's not enough to carry this show.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Incomprehensible nonsense
I tried really hard to like this show, despite a lot of effort I failed. The incomprehensible nature of the plot gives rise to a sequence of related scenes that ultimately goes nowhere.
I searched for some deep hidden metaphor to help understand what was going on, but failed at this too. A virgin mother, a messiah wandering the desert, a (flying) serpent.
It is easy to accept mad fantastical plots and crazy religions in movies like Star Wars because they don't even pretend to be realistic. That's another failing of this show: it focuses on the realities and drudgeries of grow crops, catching food and surviving in a wilderness.
You only live once, don't waste any of your life watching this show.
Mr. Holmes (2015)
Slow, dull and boring
As a massive Holmes fan, I was keen to watch this. Sadly, it starts off slowly and never picks up the pace. Endless scenes about nothing in particular.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Quite simply boring
As a fan of quite a few of the Star Trek franchise I was looking forward to watching Picard. Alas, it turned out to be a disappointment. The pace of the show is way to slow, I quit watching after 5 episodes which covered about the same material as a double episode of say Voyager. The show gets distracted by needs character exposition, every character has a cheesy back story with abandonment issues.
The plot is quite poor, it's full of characters making literally suicidal choice.
Give this a miss.
His Dark Materials (2019)
Good despite being very woke
This is a good adaptation of Pullman's book - much better than the dreadful Golden Compass movie.
Unfortunately they have brought it into the present day, which doesn't really work IMO.
It's a pity that it is quite woke, but that's the BBC for you.
Ex Machina (2014)
Not formulaic
I wonderful piece of sci-fi that does not follow the same old tired plot lines.
Brave New World (2020)
Poor adaptation
Even allowing for the fact that this show does not follow the book, it is poor in its own right. I have no idea why someone looks at an artistic masterpiece (the novel) and deludes themselves into thinking it can be improved with some shoot out scenes. Dreadfully American.
Have I Got News for You (1990)
Old and tired
Decades ago this was a great show, sadly it has become predictable and boring. Maybe if they had tried to change the format a little it would be salvageable.
