Marriage Story (2019)
Beautifully painful
This is a story that leaves you fulfilled and yet painfully empty. The true nature of a marriage that has fallen apart, with two once connected people now finding themselves adrift from one another. Both Adam Driver and Scarlet Johansson give you fantastic insight into the pain of breaking away from someone you still love very much, and yet have a greater desire to be free from. There are moments that are genuinely heartbreaking (scenes with a dramatic cat calling argument and a song evoking a realisation come to mind). It also highlights how an amicable ending to a relationship can be turned into an even more painful process by lawyers who pretend to care. As with all Noel Baumbach movies, you are in for a rollercoaster of emotions and sometimes question whether you should be laughing or crying. He also creates a story where you don't take sides and simply feel enormous empathy for each party.
This movie will rip you apart and yet give you a smudge of hope that life can continue.
Violent Night (2022)
Fun, Fun, fun...... Just don't be naughty!
This movie doesn't take itself seriously, it's all about fun, Christmas cheer and some extreme violence (but in more of comic way). David Harbour is the best Santa Claus I've seen for years. He may deliver presents to all the nice kids around the world, but you seriously do not want to be on his naughty list! This loveable rouge of a Santa is sick of "junkie" kids with their endless greed and demand for presents. However, on this Christmas Eve, he may just get his mojo back. Mixing traditional folklore with a seemly brute of a Viking warrior, slugging it out with a list of the naughtiest characters, this film is a hoot! What a great movie to begin or end your Christmas celebrations!
Most Dangerous Game (2020)
Far better than I expected
With two leading actors like Christoph and Luke, I should have expected better... but I expected a half decent film to waste a couple of hours..... But I was wrong. Not super original but Christoph is his usual fantastic self. I actually thought his character was very likeable. Most likely due to his charismatic performance. I was routing for Luke's character all the way through and with a few good supporting characters (especially that played by the English actor Chris Webster), I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
