The Last Thing He Told Me (2023)
An International Noir Vibe
Just watched the first 2 episodes and I really enjoyed them! I have not read the book so I don't have an opinion or comparison to offer. I was drawn to this show because I enjoy Jennifer Garner and was hoping this role would be reminiscent of her Alias says and it was! She is amazing!
First the intro, the dialogue flow and story pacing are very similar to those in foreign thrillers/dramas/noirs and definitely not a soap opera vibe at all. I'm not sure where one of the reviewers got that. Definitely no overreacting or unrealistic theatrics. Yes it's slow paced but you're following along with Garner as she tried to piece together and grapple with what's happening. To me it was not too slow and I didn't ever feel bored.
Angourie Rice is a perfect fit alongside Garner. She was stellar in Mare of Eastown and is stellar in this role. I didn't find her whiny or annoying at all. She played a complex teenager and you can feel her worry, confusion and her chemistry with Garner in episode 2 has you hoping the daughter and stepmom will have a stronger relationship after all this.
Definitely give it a chance and suspend any expectations and just enjoy the ride!
1899 (2022)
Must See!! Stellar International Cast!
I had to leave a review because like so many on here I loved the creator's prior show, Dark! But many seem to forget how little we really knew or understood each episode and each season answered a bit more and left you with more questions. 1899 starring an International cast does the same. They always have you guessing and the ending left my son and I speechless! So good and know that the next season will give answers and more questions as that's classic them lol
Besides the storyline and direction being stellar, this cast I was very excited to see because many of them are from my favorite shows like The Rain, Elite, The Head, Dark. The languages spoken in the show are German, French, Cantonese, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Definitely watch this show with subtitles and not dubbed bc the characters don't always know what each other are saying and that feeds the story. Such a well done show!! If you love a good kind twist this show is for you!
Escaping Polygamy (2014)
Heartbreaking, Real and Championing
I'm not sure about the "bad acting" reviews. Women in Polygamist groups are taught to be subservient and it's also a very hard choice and act to follow through on, fleeing. The main women doing the rescues are amazing using their past experiences and trauma to help these women escape. It's heartbreaking to see all these women and children in these unhealthy and unsafe living conditions but you will cheer for them when they succeed. Great show if you like seeing women helping women succeed!
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Not Perfect but Definitely Worth Watching!
Dang these scores are so low! People are way too hyper critical these days. Thankfully due to the low scores I went in with low expectations and came out really liking the movie as did my son. I mainly went bc of the original cast and they did not disappoint! Their chemistry was amazing and while the story line was a bit cheesy in some beginning parts (the poachers reminded me of Jumanji movie bad guys) it still created the nostalgia it aimed for with great CGI. Is it perfect? No. Is it still great? Yes! Nothing will compare with the original but they do a good job blending the old with the new and you'll leave happy.
Better Off Ted (2009)
Should Have Never Been Canceled!
Such a smart and hilarious show with a cast that had great chemistry. I can't believe this show was canceled after only 2 seasons. One of my all time favorites. The creator also created Santa Clarita Diet which featured several Better Off Ted cast members and another show ended too soon!
Ivalo (2018)
A Great & Snowy Nordic Noir!
If you like Nordic noirs then you'll love Arctic Circle. The cinematography is beautiful. The acting and plot well done. I love how they use Finnish, German and English throughout. Also I loved the actress, Pihla who plays the sister Marita. She leads another great noir, Deadwind on Netflix. Great show!
Motel Makeover (2021)
Ignore the bad reviews! Impressive!
I'm shocked by the low reviews and severe judgement of the women's voices/accents. They're Canadian so yes they have accents.
I was intrigued and impressed by these business savvy women who did so much of the work on their own and used their success of their first motel renovation. The show did a great job showing the stress of renovating during the pandemic and that made their ultimate success that more sweet to watch. If you like bad ass women succeeding in business and renovating then definitely check it out! Made me believe I could renovate a motel! Lol.
Brews Brothers (2020)
Ratings too low!
This show is not meant to be taken seriously obviously. It's raunchy and you find yourself laughing in spite of yourself. It reminds me of It's Always Sunny in their early days. It's worth a watch!
Eternals (2021)
So much talent underused!
I definitely had high expectations going into this with the director and the amazing cast (whom I enjoyed their acting on this film! ) and it being a Marvel film. There isn't one Marvel film that I've seen where afterwards I felt disappointed but this one I did. A lot. It felt like a very long movie rushing backstories from second person perspective and then the present day happenings. I always felt like I was missing an emotional connection to the characters, their backstory and why they were how they were present day. Then when I finally cared about a character they were killed! Gilgamesh was my favorite. I haven't read the comics but I understand if that's how the origin story goes but it was frustrating to have so many of the "Eternals" killed. Ikaris I finally started to like and was connecting with his romance to Sersei but that went nowhere. Ikaris could have been such a great redemption character but they just had him fly into the sun with zero emotional reaction from his "family". Why build a character so much and give him the most backstory just to kill him off with zero emotional payout? The CGI was also not very good. Obviously the monsters and special effects aren't real but good CGI at least temporarily helps you imagine it could be. With this movie it always felt fake and a bit cheap but very overdone? Thena was also a frustrating character that again with better character development and backstory maybe I would have liked more but her just watching her family get killed and not do anything but then later exact revenge seemed a bit too late. Where was that bad assedness earlier? Lastly the Deviants. There were some great moments that made you want to know more and then the storyline always went stale. It just was too much going on but left you feeling like a lot was missing. I don't know. I really wanted to like this and maybe if you've read the comic you can appreciate it more than I could but it was a huge let down for me on every level.
The Cleaning Lady (2022)
A promising show!!
I'm rating it a 10 bc it deserves a higher rating. I wish it was on a streaming channel bc I think they could have done more with the storyline and plot but this show and especially the lead actress is really good. I don't think many realize that there are way too many immigrants who were successful in other countries having to start over and are treated as less than even though they are probably smarter and way more qualified than most Americans for most jobs. The 2nd episode especially tugged at my heart strings. Also The chemistry between the lead actress and her boss is fun to watch :) Looking forward to how the season unfolds!
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Amazing!!!
First don't read the spoilers or watch the trailers. Watch it fresh!! It deserves that.
I don't want to spoil anything but just want to say this is such an amazing movie!! My son and I were wowed from the start and left the theater in a state of shock and awe. We laughed, we cried, we cheered. Such a well done job from the script to the acting to the special effects 👏👏👏
30 Monedas (2020)
Amazing Spanish thriller!
Wow! This horror thriller from Spain captured and held my attention through all 8 episodes. Great storytelling with amazing actors. I personally am used to watching shows from other countries so subtitles don't bother me at all. I recommend not dubbing and using subtitles. And I think it's silly those that are rating a show lower due to their personal inability to understand another language or read subtitles. I'm not sure how that's the show's fault? Anyways great show! Can't wait for season 2.
Away (2020)
Poignant and Powerful
I have never left a review on here but I was so shocked by such low ratings from people that I had to defend the show. If you go into this thinking it's a Sci- Fi show then yes you'll be disappointed but that's on you for being wrong and not reading what it's actually about🤷♀️
Anyway definitely give this show a chance! Great acting and does a great job of packing in those emotional punches as well as cliff hanger moments every episode between their past lives, loved ones on the ground and life in space along with global politics in regards to the space mission. You genuinely care about what happens to these characters and want them to make it.
