Supernova (2020)
Exquisite ... for so many reasons
I absolutely loved this film. When a film can make me laugh, cry and reminisce before 10 mins in ... I know I will love it. Not for everyone mind you. I suspect young people may not see the beauty, the reality, the authenticity, the poignancy as some things are difficult to understand when you haven't experienced them. I think Harry Macqueen has done an amazing job of writing and directing here. Some say it's cliched, I don't see that, some say it's empty! .... wow, how far from the truth! I find it quite remarkable that it it written, directed and acted with such sensitivity and is an absolute homage to relationships, marriage, friendships, life and death.
Unless you are prepared to look deep inside yourself and others and feel the emotions that are invoked .... don't go and see it. If you are interested in great script writing, great directing, great acting ... it's a must see.
Blackbird (2019)
No family is perfect in every facet ....
Well written, don't worry that it's a remake, just see the film as it is. Very difficult subject, handled in a contemporary fashion. I think it gains it's strengths as much from what is not said as it does from what is said. I love that Sam Neill doesn't need an accent other than his own. And that the grim end did not need to be explicitly depicted. Families do have their whims, their oddballs, their hiccups, their discrepancies & disagreements. That's what families are about. Yes, one or two predicatabilities and yes, she (Sarandon) did forget she couldn't move her left arm in one scene. But hey ... maybe she (the character) was just having a good day, maybe she just had an hour or two free from pain and with a little mobility. Who are we to judge someone's illness? There are too many really good elements to the film to worry about trivia. Just remember ... families are often a mish-mash of personalities.
Music (2021)
Colourful, thought-provoking musical with a good narrative
Hard to know what to expect, but if you love music, bright colourful music videos with great imaginative costuming and lots of dancing ... go see it.
The story-line fits well, casting thought on disability, addiction, friendship, dependence ... there's even a poignant and unexpected twist. The mostly good script really only has one or two very brief cringe-worthy moments about 3/4 way through and near the end but there's enough joy in this film to quickly forgive them.
Overall, a valiant and intelligent effort in writing, directing and producing. I knew very little about SIA other than her ability to successfully produce pop music and hide behind a huge wig simultaneously. I now have an enormous respect for her many (and obviously hidden) talents. Hopefully she will reveal more in the future.
Dirt Music (2019)
Disappointing ....
So disappointing, on so many levels. Thank goodness for the beautiful scenery & music. Going to see an adaptation of a Tim Winton book, with Gregor Jordan directing, with David Wenham & Aaron Pedersen in the cast, shot in W A and with Julia Stone contributing her beautiful voice and music, should have been an all round delightful experience. Sadly my expectations were way too high!
Very surprised to be so let down by the direction and acting so I can only conclude that Jack Thorne struggled desperately with the adaptation from written word to the screen. Even David Wenham struggled, unusually. A high point of the casting was Aaron Pedersen, just a pity he didn't get more screen time.
Hard to understand how the usually highly talented Gregor Jordan's direction was so lacking and again, can only conclude that the product he had to work with was so below standard.
Made in Italy (2020)
sadly lacking so much ...
What a shame this film lacks heart. Awfully written, dreadfully directed. Liam and his son were woefully wooden in their portrayals ... but being totally handicapped by the material they had to work with, they did their best. The dialogue is stilted, heartless, cold & unemotional ... very difficult elements to overcome, however the cinematographer did his best. But I suspect he was limited in how he was allowed to frame the scenes as we were confronted with the same view countless times. Thank goodness those views were of the gorgeous hilltop surroundings and the lovely settings of the Tuscany 'villa'. Oooooohhh ... this film held so much promise, could have been soooooo much more!
