The Mist (2007)
The film with the hook
This movie....
I was very much "meh" about this movie, but then in the last 30 minutes this film became one of the darkest things i've ever seen, it was overpowering in its suspense, the kick in the final minutes.
There is something very old "Stephen King" about this movie, something very primal about how it comes together and as we currently see in our world, this is the stuff that counts.
The Descent (2005)
Claustrophobia
As a claustrophobe this movie really played on me, a group of women trapped in a cave, sometimes getting stuck. It really made me edgy, but I absolutely loved it. It is a movie that deserves repeated viewings as it has a lot of gusto to it.
More horror films should pray on conditions such as claustrophobia as a hook to pull in the terror. Well done t all.
Us (2019)
Overhyped, under delivers
After all the hype, I really wanted to see this. I cannot lie I was under-impressed by the film Get Out as I found it very cliche and not remotely new territory unless you consider the African-American element to be new.
Us is an ultra-long borefest, all style above substance, it does not really go anywhere the characters are unbelievable, it goes on and on with no real "get out clause"
Get out was actually far better, this just dragged and dragged, while it looked nice, that was it, there was suspense in one or two places particularly at the fair, but this does not make up for the time you have to waste watching it.
It Follows (2014)
Struggled
I really do not understand the fuss with this film, for me it just did not do anything. I found it a bit of a mess to be honest. After the initial shock at the start of the girl on the beach, it languished in boredom.
The Guest (2014)
Truly epic thriller
Love this film, you never really know quite where it is going, starts out as one thing and ends as another. The film goes beyond your expectations in terms of its structure.
Dan Stevens should really get much more work based on the solidity of his performance here, even though he's the basd guy he isa likeable to the last minute.
The film is topped off by one of the best scores i've ever heard, a truely rocking score that highlights its 80s influences.
I saw this for the first time in 2014, i've seen it a dozen times since then, i never lose the passion for this.
Beyond Fury (2019)
British thriller with a euro twist
Loved this film, yes its made on a budget but they do a class act with the budget they have. Lots of solid cameos from westerns and giallo. Pretty intense storyline with great actors and actresses.
There is some dark humour afoot here, with a really unusual style for a brit film.
The end did let it down ever so slightly, but overall it worked, although its part of a trilogy of films you dont need to see others in order to peice together the story.
My Bloody Banjo (2015)
Wrong but right
Really enjoyed this movie, all kinds of wrong in a really good way. Really funny with solid performances, loved the random cameos.
Without a doubt one of the best indie films of the last ten years, a real piece of art. Loads of blood and gore and sick things said and done, a true tribute to the 80's from someone (Liam the director) who clearly knows what he is doing.
