The Matrix (1999)
Good, but highly overrated.
First of all, the movie isn't that bad to watch. It would be a genuine delight to sci-fi lovers. But I don't think it deserves a 8.7 rating and a place in the IMDb top 20.
One thing that doesn't delight me is that the main strength of the movie which is about the computer simulation isn't an original idea. There have been lots of theories regarding it. And the plot is very simple with many plot holes. Neo as the chosen one isn't portrayed correctly. I see no special abilities in him.
Fights were really silly and were too long where you get bored and just want to skip them and I see no reason why trinity fell in love with neo when they didn't spend any time together at all , just because a fortune teller told her that she would fell in love with the chosen one , is it how emotions work? Well , I don't think so.
Apart from these there are a bunch of positive things too. Special effects were awesome considering that this movie came out in 1999. The idea of the story is innovative for Hollywood and matrix came out in era where there isn't much interest in sci-fi among filmmakers while the thrillers ruled them. So these things made it highly rated back then in 1999. Watching today wouldn't make much sense considering that special effects based movies are ruling the theaters now and every now and then sci fi movies are being released.
Fight Club (1999)
A must watch movie.
This movie isn't just about acting or story or narration and not even the mind blowing twist that you'll ever see. It has something more than this that you need to experience in first hand.
It discusses about a lot of interesting topics like consumerism, nihilism, chaos, denying existentialism, how the modern man is becoming more materialistic than spiritual.
Well, if these topics don't appeal to you. You will watch it like a normal movie and even though you will like it because of the mind blowing twists that you'll ever see.
If you want to experience this movie to the hardcore level, observe every dialogue and try to understand what does it mean. This is one of the rare cases where the movie elevates the book but not the other way around.
Brad Pitt's acting is one the highlights of the movie. No one could have done better than him for this character. Unlike many movies like shutter island, predestination where the twist had made the movie better, this isn't the case here. It is already a way better movie but the twist makes it even better.
It's no wonder the movie had developed a massive cult following since its release. Fightclub released today would have made more sense than in 1999. Tyler durden would be my one of the favourite characters of all time, both director and brad pitt had done a good job of portraying it.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
It isn't just a movie. It's a genre.
Before I've watched this movie , I thought it was overrated. Well, by no means it is overrated. No one could ever match the Tarantino's screenplay in this movie. It hasn't got any bold story(which makes it better, to be honest) and a non linear timeline which is constructed very beautifully.
It is great, magnificent and got all the characteristics of a great movie: great acting, good narration, and screenplay afterall is it's biggest strength.
You can't even imagine anyone other than samuel Jackson and John Travolta in their roles. Two gangsters of their own style, who talk about what's a big mac called In other countries, talking about movies, and everything except a murder during a murder. The world and characters in pulp fiction are way different, no one feels guilty or sorry towards a crime and we'll get along with it too. This aspect was portrayed very smoothly.
As I already said pulp fiction is a genre in itself. It has inspired a lot of moviemakers around the world and I was shocked by knowing that this is Tarantino's second movie only.no one can match this masterpiece.
