In the Flesh (2013)
I REALLY Wanted to Like This
I really wanted to like "In the Flesh", but I just can't :( I'm an avid fan of zombie genre; Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead (both versions), 28 Days Later, Walking Dead. I'm even tolerant of off-beat zombie genre (Shawn of the Dead, Black Sheep) and low-budget indie zombie genre (Stakeland).
So I *expected* to like "In the Flesh". It has an intelligent an novel premise; the world had a rough time, but did not end, and now is trying to recover from the zombie apocalypse. Lots of good metaphors for racism and classism, mixed with the legitimate fears of violence and the threats posed by religious fundamentalism. This should be premium stuff.
But it makes one deadly error: it is BORING! Slow, plodding, monotonous. The plot moves at the pace of a wounded slug. They take *ages* to get anywhere. This same story, with the content they have, could have been presented in 1/3 the time, and would have been better or it. After an hour, I could not take it any more, and turned it off :(
The Offence (1973)
What a Pretentious Load of Crap!
I want the 2 hours of my life back :( This is a pretentious load of crap. I don't understand what all the other reviewers are talking about. Connery's "performance" consists of chewing on the furniture for most of the movie. The film makers seem to think that under-exposed film, bad lighting, and worse sound will make the movie seem deeper. The characters and motivations are totally contrived. Yuck.
The film comes in two halves. The first half is a very boring and slow "who done it?" cops and robbers affair, trying to find who attacked some little children. But it is incredibly, painfully slow and tedious. It is not helped at all by the acid-trip habit of inserting random imagery of flowers into scenes that were otherwise intended to be tense.
The second half is one of those pretentious dialogs where two characters talk at each other for an hour. This is the scene other reviewers rave about, and I totally don't get it. It is *awful*; Connery and the other guy are both horribly over-acting, and don't look like realistic characters at all. They look like awkward puppets acting out the tedious message of the film makers.
Again, yuck. And I even *like* Connery. But this is almost as bad as Zardoz. Almost, because nothing could really be as bad as Zardoz :)
Afro Samurai (2007)
Wasted Potential
I love anime. I love samurai stories. I love Samuel Jackson. This show *should* have rocked, but it was really tedious.
Where did it go wrong? I think the writers & directors spent too much time watching "Dragon Ball Z" and such like lame crap. The entire plot cycle of this show is an angry dude out to avenge his father, killing the villain of the week. Nothing new happens, there is no plot, it is just one stupid fight scene after another.
The only thing that makes this not 100% kiddie fare is the huge amount of blood they spray across the screen. Someone was clearly getting off on watching blood gush, and they go way over the top making it gush like Old Faithful.
Don't bother with this show unless you like mindless violence and cultural pandering. Go watch something actually good like "Cowboy Bebop", "Samurai Champloo", or "Ghost in the Shell".
