The Animal Kingdom (1932)
Swap Leading Ladies?
As I watched this movie, I couldn't help wondering if I wouldn't like it better if the leading ladies switched roles. I did not find Ann Harding convincing AT ALL as the bohemian, free love, artistic Daisy. She is much too upper crust for the part. Her patrician looks and demeanor would have fit much better in the part of Cee.
And I would love to see Myrna get to be Daisy. Her sophisticated but unflappable manner would have made Daisy more fun and a more obvious choice for Leslie Howard to choose at the end.
Anyone agree?
The Fugitive (1947)
One of the Oddest Movies I've Ever Seen
I was attracted to this movie because of Henry Fonday, Dolores del Rio, and John Ford, all of whom I'm a fan. But this movie was just so WEIRD. From the start, I felt like I had joined the movie in the middle. The dramatic music along the walk and as he enters the church - it feels like a crucial point in a movie, but we don't even know what's going on yet. There are long periods with no dialogue, almost has the feel of a silent movie at times.
I found the whole movie depressing without any redeeming character development that would have made me sympathize with the characters. Why is Fonda, a white priest, even in this country in the first place? It's never explained. And he lets everyone take the fall for him. He's not likable or relatable in any way to me.
Reunion in France (1942)
Joan is Great Here!
This is not one of Crawford's better known films, but I was glad I caught it on TCM recently. I think Joan's character feels very believable. She starts out as a spoiled, entitled rich French girl who isn't really concerned about the world around her. The war changes her for the better and opens her eyes. But her background as a wealthy woman makes her believable when standing up to the Nazis. In her home, for instance, she never backs down - by gosh it's her freaking house! I like her spunk and it feels real because nothing really bad has every happened to her so she's not afraid of the Nazi intruders. She's more annoyed by them.
I liked it. Crawford it always entertaining to watch.
Goodbye, My Fancy (1951)
Surprise Ending
I was shocked that Crawford ended up with Frank Lovejoy at the end of this movie. First of all, Robert Young was a much bigger star, and the stars usually get the girl in movies of this era. While I've seen dozens of movies with Robert Young, I don't think I've ever seen Frank Lovejoy in another film.
But mostly it's that his character is such a jerk, I can't imagine why Crawford would choose to be with him. He basically blackmails her, stalks her, and undermines her throughout this movie. While Young's character wasn't perfect, he did stand up for her at the end and admitted his mistakes.
Whose idea was it for Joan to choose the photographer? He's rough and crude and not even attractive in my opinion.
