Inspector Morse: The Wolvercote Tongue (1987)
"Bad acting" ???
Another reviewer here complains that "we are exposed to these actors playing "Americans" with ridiculous accents that sound nothing like an American. The old bag called Janet in this episode is particularly bad."
Janet is played by Mildred Shay.
Wikipedia tells us "Mildred Helen Shay (September 26, 1911 - October 15, 2005) was an American film actress of the 1930s whose affairs, marriages and glamorous social life became a popular subject for gossip columnists. At five-feet tall, Shay was dubbed the "Pocket Venus" by Hollywood gossip columnists."
She was born in Cedarhurst, Long Island, New York.
The Royal Hotel (2023)
Engrossing drama
Really well made film with excellent performances from Julia Garner, Hugo Weaving, Ursula Yovich and a fine ensemble cast. The cinematography and set design were really impressive and kept me engrossed throughout.
The story was basic, the real interest was in how the characters reacted to the situation and how it gradually evolved. The horrible atmosphere was maybe laid on a bit thick (would the bus really not go a bit closer to the hotel rather than strand the women where it did?) but my wife commented that she was strongly reminded of the drinking culture she knew in pre-Tracy Darwin, and unfortunately familiar from more recent times as well.
Recommended to a mature audience.
Aftertaste (2021)
Unpalatable
Peter Carroll and Rachel Griffiths are wasted in this unfunny comedy with repulsive leading characters.
