Waar (2013)
Good Effort but time limited!
Yes, I gave it a 7 despite being a Pakistani and I had waited for a screening for this movie for a long time. I did get to see a screening and although I admired some of the moments in the movie. The dialog and direction of the movie ruined most of it for me.
As many others have pointed out, the lack of Urdu dialog as the primary language makes the movie dull at many points. I would have preferred watchingthe movie in Urdu. A lot of the dialog and scenes feel as if taken right out of foreign movies. Even if they're not clichéd, they feel so. This hurts the very serious atmosphere of the movie.
Apart from that, the subject matter of the movie tries to achieve too much. There was no need for the political drama surrounding the politicians. If this part was taken out and more effort was put into the development of the characters and the plot, this would have been a perfect 9 for the Pakistani Film Industry. The character of Mujtaba and Ehtesham could develop into further episodes of CTG.
Ali Azmat delivers the worst Urdu dialog and I literally cringed through out his scenes. Meesha and Aisha deliver the better part of the movie. I don't have much to say about Hamza but Shaan takes the movie as much of it relies on his shoulders. Some senior actors in the cast may have produced better results like Talat Hussain.
I felt obliged to write a review because I liked what I saw. The music was spot on and so were the effects. This just needed better direction.
Koto no ha no niwa (2013)
Visually stunning with a good story
I've seen most of Makoto Shinkai's anime. When I first saw 5cm per second, I was amazed at how well the emotions of the characters dwell in the environment around them.
Garden of words is no exception. The refined use of environment and ambient effects (sound, music, weather etc) contribute greatly to the film's story. There isn't much to say about how Makoto does it and if you're going to like the style but give it a watch and you'll know.
Overall, Garden of words is a really good piece of art. It's definitely filled with Makoto's signature style and a definite recommendation to watch.
