Django 2 - Il grande ritorno (1987)
Not as good as the original, but still fun!
Django has gone soft, buried his machine gun, and is now a monk. When a woman tells him his daughter has been kidnapped and forced into slavery, Django decides he has to right this wrong.
DSA feels very much like an Italian exploitation film to me. There is such a heavy use of fog, I wouldn't have been surprised if one of the corpses got up and started eating the flesh of the living (ie Fulci). Django kills three men very slasher like when he decapitates them in a single swoop from a scythe that he gets from a grim reaper statue. And lastly, the way the other slaves are portrayed remind me of cannibals, they rip apart at least one man.
The excellent Django theme song is no where to be found, but the groovy score that is present certainly delivers when Django is causing death and destruction.
Minus the film's prologue, DSA feels nothing like a western to me. I've read other people praising DSA's prologue, but it came off real corny to me. I do agree DSA feels more like a Rambo riff, which is funny to me because at one point film makers were copying Django and now, Django is copying another film.
DSA is a bit slow and incoherent for me. The Anchor Bay disc I watched didn't have English captions even when I had the film's Italian audio track on, so I had a bit of a tough time understanding the dialogue.
It may not be as memorable as the original Django, but it's a blast to see Franco Nero once again wielding his machine gun and take no prisoners!
The Zombie Diaries (2006)
An Unbiased Review
For every positive review I read for this film, I read at least two negative reviews for this film. I was extremely excited when my girlfriend pointed this movie out to me, but I couldn't find it to rent, so I had to buy it in order to watch it. Of course I was not confident because of the reviews I read prior to buying it, but I thought it would be better to have an open mind and decide for myself if "The Zombie Diaries" was good or bad. Because I really, really enjoy zombie films, it saddens me to say that all of those negative reviews were right, "The Zombie Diaries" was really bad. But make up your own mind and watch "The Zombie Diaries" for yourself. Just know you have been warned.
Abominable (2006)
Throw back to a fun genre
After reading multiple bad reviews for Abominable, I feel as if I have to write a positive review for it, because I really enjoyed it.
I love directors, such as the director of Abominable, Adam Green also comes to mind, because they grew up on horror films form the 80s and that is what they want in their films. They hate CGI and know tons of gore shots make the movie more fun.
As for the movie, the first time I watched it I thought it was kind of slow. But I realized, the filmmakers were just following the formula of Jaws and Alien, you don't really get to see the monster in full until the last act.
I love how the monster is in fact a man in a suit, like a stated earlier, no CGI here. I actually thought the monster looked really cool. I hate how I have read a lot people saying, "The monster looks so cheesy" and "Jeez, the monster, come on." No, you come on. The effects they made possible with a man in suit, I think is just rad.
Another high point in the film for me was the gore. It doesn't really come in until the last act of the film. But there are some pretty gore shots in there.
Note - My review was for the DVD of Abominable, not the SCI FI Channel broadcast version.
Bruiser (2000)
Under-appreciated
Aside from this being another well written and well directed film by Mr. Romero, having Tom Atkins (Night of the Creeps, Halloween 3) and The Misfits (The Michale Graves Era Misfits) makes this movie so much more cooler. The story follows the main character who even as a adult is still greatly picked on and belittled. He wakes up one morning without a face and decides to go after those who have wronged him. Call it a revenge film if you want, I call it fun.
If you watch the DVD of Bruiser, be sure to watch the music video Romero directed for The Misfits. All the Misfits are zombies and are attacking a hospital. Very cool.
